Honda Begins Production of Accord V-6 Sedan in Alabama
7/17/2009

Honda Manufacturing of Alabama marked the start of production of the Accord V-6 Sedan today, utilizing the plant’s flexible manufacturing system to meet customer demand for Honda’s lineup of passenger cars and light trucks and ensure the most efficient use of Honda’s manufacturing capacity in Alabama and throughout North America.
“The addition of the Accord V-6 Sedan in Alabama was a great challenge, but one that our associates have accomplished by working together with a single focus -- to build products of the highest quality for our customers,” said Nobu Sanui, president and CEO of Honda’s Alabama operations.
HMA is now the production source of four Honda vehicles: the Odyssey minivan; the Pilot sport utility vehicle; the Ridgeline pickup; and the Accord V-6 Sedan, as well as the V-6 engines that power each vehicle.
A brief ceremony attended by more than 1,000 Line 2 associates marked the start of mass production of the Accord in Alabama. The first Alabama-built Accord was a top-of-the-line EX-L model in Silver Metallic, equipped with leather interior and a navigation system.
“The quick transfer of production of the Accord V-6 Sedan from Ohio to Alabama in a nine-month time period is a testament to Honda’s production flexibility and confidence in our Alabama workforce,” said Chuck Ernst, HMA senior vice president. “We are honored to add the Accord as the latest model in our production lineup.”
The Accord was first produced in the U.S. in 1982 at the Marysville Auto Plant in Marysville, Ohio. It was the first Japanese-nameplate car produced in the United States. The success of the Accord demonstrated that quality automobiles could be built in America and set a path for Honda in North America. Seven more Accord generations followed, leading to the eighth-generation Accord now being built in Alabama and Ohio. In October 2008, Honda announced Accord V-6 Sedan production would be added in Alabama to allow increased production of Accord 4-cylinder models in Ohio.
The Honda Accord received a full model change for the 2008 model year. The 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine produces 271 horsepower – the most ever for Accord – while introducing a new generation of fuel-saving Variable Cylinder Management technology and achieving a Partial Zero-Emissions Vehicle rating. The VCM system, standard on all automatic transmission-equipped V-6 models, operates in 6-cylinder mode for power and 4- and 3-cylinder modes for efficiency, resulting in an EPA city/highway fuel economy rating of 19/29 miles per gallon (Accord V-6 Sedan).
The Accord also features Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, which enhances frontal collision compatibility with vehicles of different sizes and bumper heights. Additional standard safety equipment on the Accord includes Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), (electronic stability control); side-curtain airbags; dual-chamber front side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), active front seat head restraints, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution, brake assist and more.
HMA builds the Odyssey minivan on both Line 1 and Line 2. The Ridgeline has been added to Line 1 production, while the Pilot sport utility vehicle and the Accord V-6 Sedan are built only on Line 2 at the $1.4 billion Lincoln facility.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment in 1959 of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Honda's first overseas subsidiary. The company has invested more than $12.1 billion in its U.S. operations. With 15 major manufacturing facilities, Honda employs more than 33,000 associates in North America to produce Honda and Acura automobiles, all-terrain vehicles, personal watercraft, lawn mowers, general-purpose engines, and other power equipment products. Honda currently partners with more than 620 North American suppliers, including 545 in the U.S., and purchased more than $19.5 billion in parts and materials from its North American suppliers in 2008.

Ohio State President Gordon Gee Makes a Stop in Logan County
7/16/2009
Dr. E. Gordon Gee, President of the Ohio State University, came to visit Mad River Family Practice Thursday afternoon. The stop is part of his trip around Ohio, during which he will be visiting 44 counties. Mad River Family Practice, located in the Oakhill Medical Center, is a partner of the Ohio State University College of Medicine and is home to the Ohio State University Rural Program.
The Practice welcomed Dr. Gee with a giant buckeye cake provided by 2007 OSU Medical School graduate, and current resident, Laura Sorg. Gee was happy with what the Practice has accomplished and was very interested in learning what their program does, how they do their job, and how it will help residents who decide to choose that career path. Also, he liked the setting of the Bellefontaine area for the program and thinks that it will prepare students well for all kinds of real world situations.
Listen to Dr. Gee talk about the purpose of his visit and what he thinks about the program.
The Ohio State University Rural Medicine Program is a one-of-a-kind program. It is the only rural training track in the world that has its residents for three years. Also, the type of affiliation it has with OSU is one of only 26 such partnerships in the entire nation.
While Ohio State is an important part of this program, Randall Longenecker, the Rural Program Director and Assistant Dean of Rural Medical Education, said that the local community in Bellefontaine and surrounding Logan county offers the great support that helps the program thrive. Ohio State pays the residents while they are at Mad River Family Practice but the remainder of the funding is provided by Mary Rutan Hospital, whose board Longenecker said has been tremendously supportive and helpful in starting and maintaining the program.
Listen to Dr. Longenecker's comments about Dr. Gee's visit and the program.

Burke concerned about new state budget
7/14/2009
State Representative Dave Burke (pictured) (R- Marysville) today announced the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 1. The $50.5 billion, two-year state operating budget passed the Ohio House by a vote of 54-44.Monday, the House voted to accept the changes made by a six-member legislative conference committee, nearly two weeks past the July 1st deadline. The committee was tasked with closing a $3.2 billion deficit after Governor Strickland’s administration announced a steep decline in state revenues in June.
“Unemployment in this state is the highest it has been in 25 years,” Burke said. “In this difficult economy it is important for government to protect vital services for our most vulnerable citizens. In addition, the state needs to assist in attracting jobs to create viable employment to get people back to work. I did not see the latter in this budget.”The measure still contains items for which House Republicans have repeatedly raised objections. The plan is the Governor Strickland’s framework which includes $4.3 billion in one-time revenue sources, with approximately $2.2 billion in temporary federal funding; institutes more than $1 billion in fee increases which the governor has previously equated to a tax increase; and paves the way for the governor to expand gambling in Ohio with slot machines.House Republicans have continually called for measures to be added to the budget that would streamline government operations and the Medicaid system to save the state nearly $3 billion over the next two years. Two proposals, House Bill 25 and House Bill 240, were dismissed as amendments to the budget by House Democrats, who currently hold the majority of seats in the Ohio House. Republicans have stressed the need for these long-term solutions as important to the stability of future budgets, and as a means to protect vital services for all Ohioans.“Ohio needs leadership that turns on the economic engine of our state,” Burke said. “Until we engage our current and future job-makers, we will continue to idle through a tough economy.”The bill will now be sent to Governor Strickland for his signature.

The Bellefontaine City Schools Board of Education met Monday night. There were several staff appointments, a resignation, and the renewal of a host of supplemental contracts. The board also agreed to send a resolution to the Superintendent of Public Instruction and to the Tax Commissioner of Ohio, requesting state consent to issue bonds of the school district and to submit the question of such issuance to the electors.

The issue asks for 39% of the building costs, with the state paying for the remaining 61% through a grant.
Listen to Dr. Anderson explain the issue.

It's Fair Time
7/13/2009
Monday was move-in day for the Logan County Fair. Judging and animal weigh-ins began. Rides, games, vendors, and concessions set-up their booths for the rest of the week.
Those involved with the Opening Ceremonies rehearsed, including the 4-H band which is made up of about 20 members.
Quilt judging was one of the first things to happen today. Quilts are judged on piecing, color, stitch, and theme. There were 75 entries this year, which is more than previous years.
The quilt judge is trained and has certification from the National Quilting Association. She gives constructive criticism on the quilts and then chooses a winner for each category. When the decision is difficult, she looks at which one was more difficult to make and then gives that one first place.
The judge said that if she had been able to give a "most unique" award today she would've awarded it to the "3-eyed monster" quilt in the children's division.
For Tuesday, Secretary-Treasurer Bev Cotterman recommends checking out the Grand Opening (9 a.m) , Kids Choosing Christ (9-1), harness racing (7 p.m.), and the King and Queen contest (6 p.m. on WPKO).
