Kenneth B. Barrett

Kenneth B. Barrett, 71, of Rushsylvania, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Logan Acres.

He was born on October 14, 1937 in Union County, Indiana to the late Ernest and Cora (Wilder) Barrett.

On July 7, 1957 he married his first wife, Donna (Logan) Barrett in Andersonville, Indiana and she preceded him in death on April 7, 1998. Also preceding him in death is a stepson, Rocky Quay; a brother, James Barrett; and a sister, Linda E. Rietel.

He is survived by his second wife, Patricia “Pat” (Godwin) Quay Barrett whom he married on October 10, 1998 in Harper, OH.  Also surviving is a son, Tony (Beth) Barrett of Bellefontaine; step-son, Wade (Cathy) Quay of Smyrna, Georgia; step-daughters, Susie (Pat) Whittington and Kerry (Dan) Boysel both of Delaware, OH, and Kathrine (Tom) Watson of Illinois City, Illinois; step-daughter-in-law, Marlene Font of Wapakoneta, OH; brothers, Richard (Sharon) Barrett of Claremont, California, Ernest (Bonnie) Barrett of Laurel, Indiana, Granville (Debbie) Barrett of Connersville, Indiana and Preston (Sandy) Barrett of Portland, Tennessee; sisters, Carolyn (Jack) Moeller of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Catherine (Eric) George of Columbus, Indiana and Sharon (Terry) Burdick of Smithfield, Ohio;  three (3) grandchildren, Zakary Logan, Savannah Lee and Tessa Elizabeth Barrett; 15 Step-Grandchildren and 4 Step Great-Great Grandchildren.

A member of the Harper United Methodist Church, Kenneth helped with Christian services and conducted a Bible study.  He worked with the children at the First Church of God in Bellefontaine and in Big Springs.  He was an avid gardener, enjoyed carpentry work and loved family gatherings and all the food.

Rev. William Zeller and Rev. Joshua Johnson will conduct a funeral service at 10:30 am on Monday, August 31st at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 on Sunday, August 30th.  Burial will follow the service at the Rushsylvania Cemetery.

Avis Arlene McAdams

Avis Arlene McAdams, 84, of Russells Point, OH, passed away on the morning of Tuesday, August, 25, 2009, at her daughter’s home in Sidney, OH.

She was born on January 9, 1925, in Huntsville, Ohio to the late Paul & Mildred Eleyet McAdams. She was preceded in death by a brother Quinn McAdams.

She is survived by two daughters: Jodell “Jo” (Steven) Grewe, Sidney, OH, and Charlene (Mark) Kopchak, Beavercreek, OH, a son: Danny Egbert, Beavercreek, OH, four grandchildren: Joel, John, Jordan, and Melanie Egbert, and a sister: Lois Huffman, Bellefontaine, OH.

Avis was a 1943 graduate of Washington High School, Lewistown, OH, and worked for Greyhound Bus Lines and E. F. McDonald Travel Company. She was a member of the Indian Lake Community Church, Russells Point, OH. She was a seamstress, gardener and enjoyed crafts.

Michael L. LeVan

Michael L. LeVan, 68, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2009 at the Ohio State University James Cancer Center in Columbus.

He was born on January 14, 1941 in Troy, OH to the late Charles William and Margaret Helen (Roach) LeVan.

On September 30, 1961 he married Jeanette English at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Bellefontaine and she survives along with their sons, Mike (Kelly) LeVan II of Bellefontaine and Jeff (Melissa) LeVan of Alger.  Also surviving is a brother, William E.O. (Koneta) LeVan of Springfield; two sisters, Cheryl (Ivan) Wilgus of West Mansfield and Pat (Robert) Mitchell of Bellefontaine; grandchildren, Dana, Mike III, David, and Austin; and three great grandchildren, Sarah, Jacob and Aaron Mullins.

Preceding him in death is a brother, Richard Thomas LeVan.

A 1960 Bellefontaine High School graduate, Mike retired from Honda where he worked in Material Services.  He was a member and usher at St. Patrick Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, August 27th from 5 to 8 at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine.  A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, August 28th at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Rev. James Miller officiating.  Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Bellefontaine.

Myron D. Minnich

Myron D. Minnich, 77, of Mattoon, Illinois and formerly of DeGraff, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at 1:20 p.m. at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Mattoon, Illinois.

He was born on December 17, 1931 in Continental, Ohio, a son of the late Marian and Helen Bailey Minnich.

On May 22, 1964, he married the former Dorothy J. Beard and she preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 2008.

Mr. Minnich had been employed at Westinghouse and he loved gardening, woodworking and rectifying things. He attended the Mt. Tabor Church of God in DeGraff and was an Air Force Veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by a son, Micah (Amy) Minnich of Mattoon, Illinois; grandchildren, Micah “Alex”, Olivia and Matthew; a sister, Janine (Richard) Millager of Oklahoma City, OK and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 20, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mt. Tabor Church of God, DeGraff where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday. Brother Kerry Snapp and Brother William Price will officiate. Burial will be in the Plum Cemetery, Lewistown with military rites by the Logan County Honor Guard.

Franklin Eugene “Gene” Mathews

Franklin Eugene “Gene” Mathews, 67, of Belle Center, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2009, at his home.

He was born on September 1, 1941, in Bellefontaine, Ohio to the late Frank Buchenroth and Dortha Mae Sargent. On August 3, 1983, he married the former Nannett Marie Piercey in Zanesfield.

He is survived by his wife: Nannett, a daughter: Debbie (Terry) Kipker, Bellefontaine, five sons: Jeff Mathews, David Mathews, Greg Mathews, Bruce Mathews, all of Bellefontaine, and Mike Mathews, Lakeview, stepdaughter: Rene` (Larry) Huffman, Huntsville, stepson: Shawn (Lori) Allen, Belle Center, 25 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

Gene was a member of the Indian Lake Moose Lodge #1533, Lakeview, Indian Lake FOE Aeries #3615, Lakeview, FOE Aeries #2166, Bellefontaine and Friends Serving Friends of Indian Lake. He enjoyed golfing and fishing.

Per Mr. Mathews’ request, his body will be cremated. Brother William Price will conduct a graveside memorial service at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Huntsville Cemetery.

Please do not grieve or mourn for my Gene, but celebrate the life we shared with him.

Raymond Russell Bailey

Raymond Russell Bailey, 77, of West Liberty, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

He was born on July 1, 1932 in Logan County, OH to the late George L. and Mildred (Couchman) Bailey. He is also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Bailey.

On October 26, 1957 he married Sylvia M. Jones in Vincennes, IN and she survives along with sons, Russell L. (Tamie) Bailey of High Point, NC, Robert (Patty) Bailey of Bellefontaine and Ronald (Louise) Bailey of Kenton. Also surviving are two (2) brothers, Phillip (Cathy) Bailey of Bellefontaine and Frank (Janet) Bailey of East Liberty; two (2) sisters, Alice (Robert) Riffe of Springfield and Shirley (Winfred) McDonald of Mechanicsburg; 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

After 42 years at D.A.B. in Bellefontaine, he retired and then worked at Wal-Mart for 10 years. He was a member of the Gretna Brethren Church and a Navy veteran serving in the Korean War.

Visitations are scheduled for Tuesday, August 18th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where Pastor Larry Brown will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 19th. Burial will follow in the Greenwood-Union Cemetery in DeGraff with military honors by the Logan County Honor Guard.

David L. Lusby

David L. Lusby, 52, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Mary Rutan Hospital.

He was born on January 30, 1957 in Bellefontaine to the late Benjamin Lusby and Lucile (Amos) Lusby who survives in Bellefontaine.

On April 6, 1990 he married Lee Ann Hughes in Bellefontaine and she survives along with two (2) daughters, Shauna and Emma Lusby both of Bellefontaine and two (2) brothers, Richard (Dorothy) Lusby and Russell Lusby both of Bellefontaine.

A 1975 graduate of Benjamin Logan High School, David worked in maintenance at Daido Metal where he loved his job and the friends he worked with. He also loved farming, hunting, fishing and his black lab, Luke.

Visitations are scheduled for Thursday, August 20th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine. Rev. William Zeller will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 am on Friday, August 21 at the Harper United Methodist Church.

Kathryn N. Allen

Kathryn N. Allen, 82, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at the home of her granddaughter.

She was born on January 24, 1927 in Huntsville, OH to the late Earl R. and Lena Mae (Shroyer) McAdams.

On July 20, 1945, she married William L. Allen in Belle Center and he preceded her in death on August 13, 2006. Also preceding her in death is a son, William E. Allen and a sister, Barbara Lee Britton.

She is survived by three sons, Barry L. (Dorothy Ann) Allen of Lafayette, OH, Thomas G. (Linda D.) Allen of West Liberty and Christopher K. (Ruth Ann) Allen of Summerville, SC; daughter-in-law, Linda K. Allen of Belle Center; a brother, Herbert Earl McAdams of Richmond, IN; a sister Janice Grigaliunas of Kenton; 17 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and one (1) great great grandson.

A member of the Belle Center United Methodist Church, Kathryn owned and operated Katie’s Beauty Salon and worked for Jim’s Sportswear.

A graveside services is scheduled for 11:00 am on Friday, August 21, 2009 at the Fairview Cemetery in Belle Center with Pastor Kevin Smith officiating.

Travis W. Knox, 32, of Rushsylvania, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2009 at the Mary Rutan Hospital.

He was born on January 3, 1977 in Kenton, OH to Arthur E. (Missy) Knox of Huntsville and Judy Wirick of Rushsylvania.

On May 15, 2004 he married Amanda Breneman in West Mansfield, OH and she survives along with their children, Tyler, Kayla and Kyra Knox all of Rushsylvania; a brother, Arthur (Jamie) Knox Jr. of Bellefontaine; sister, Paige Knox of Huntsville; step-brother, Tommy Tuttle; maternal grandmother, Martha Thomas of Rushsylvania; paternal grandmother, Doris Wessel of Bellefontaine; and nieces and nephews, Jacob Knox and Christain and Emily Postle.

He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Joe Thomas and Pearl Knox.

Travis worked for Honda in Marysville in the weld shop. He was a 1995 graduate of Benjamin Logan High School where he played football. He enjoyed hunting and all sports.

Dean Raber 8-12-09Dean L. Raber, 78, of Lakeview, passed away Wednesday morning, August 12, 2009, at Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine, OH.

Dean was born on June 2, 1931 in Mexico, IN to the late Claude L. Raber and Elma Heasman Raber Meeks. On February 24, 1950, he married Carrie Pauline “Polly” Strawsburg in Peru, IN, and she died July 10, 2008. He was also preceded in death by a sister: Phyllis Rye and a brother: Pete Raber.

He is survived by one Daughter: Nancy Brentlinger, Lakeview, 3 Grandchildren: Jon (Tammy ) Brentlinger, Rio Grande, OH, Mike (Erica) Brentlinger, Richwood, OH and Terry (Ashley) Brentlinger, Lakeview, 8 Great Grandchildren: Triston, Graysen, JJ, Morgan, Hayden, Haleigh, Taylor, & Madison, a brother: Fred (Pat) Raber, Peru, IN and several Nieces and Nephews.

Dean owned and operated Dean’s Shell and Dean’s 76 Service Stations in Lakeview from 1969 – 1994. He worked at NAPA in Lakeview for 15 years. He was a 1949 graduate of Peru High School, Peru, IN. Dean was a Sergeant in the US Army serving in Korea. He was a member of Doyle R. Miller Amvet Post # 39, Lakeview and the United States Bowling Congress. He enjoyed bowling, roller skating, playing bingo, and shooting pool.

A funeral service will be conducted by Pastor Dwight L. Metzger at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 2009, at Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview, Ohio. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 16th from 2-5 p.m. at Shoffstall Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fletcher Chapel Cemetery, Harmony Twp, Ohio.

Robert L. Dicke

Robert L. Dicke, 73, of Lakeview, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at this residence.

He was born on July 25, 1936 in St. Marys, Ohio a son of the late Lafe and Hazel Hussey Dicke. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth and Jean and two brothers, Carl and Wilford.

He retired from the former Miami Industries in Piqua and was a member of the Indian Lake Moose Lodge #1533 and enjoyed woodworking and painting.

He is survived by daughters, Teresa Martin of Bellefontaine, Brenda (Aaron) Wieler of Sidney; a son, Robert Dicke, Jr. of California; step-daughter, Alana Adkins of Russells Point; step-sons, Jerry (Shirley) Milbourn of Sidney, Wren (Marcia) Mayo of Lewistown, Luke (Char) Mayo of North Carolina, Vess Lewis of West Milton and Shannon (Ruth) Lewis of Texas; 27 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Wilda (James) Allison, New Lexington, Ohio; brothers, Richard (Anna) Dicke of Arkansas and Larry (Betty) Dicke of St. Marys.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Ashley Renee Neer

Ashley Renee Neer, 21, of Huntsville, passed away on Tuesday, August 11th at her residence.

She was born on August 22, 1987 to Norman Randolf and Tonya (Berry) Neer.


She is survived by her mother, Tonya, of Huntsville and a brother, Marvin Edward (Heather) Neer of Lakeview.

Also surviving is her maternal grandparents, Ed and Jewel Berry of Bellefontaine; paternal grandmother, Barbara Neer of Bellefontaine; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.


Ashley is preceded in death by her father, Norman and her paternal grandfather, Leslie Marvin Neer.


A 2006 Indian Lake High School graduate, Ashley worked for Lowes in Bellefontaine. She was a member of the Indian Lake FFA, advisor for the Lewistown Stitchin Stirrin & Stuff 4-H Club, served on the Logan County Fair Board and was a member of the Ohio and Logan County Suffolk Sheep, Lamb & Pig Association.


Pastor Ray Headings will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 am on Monday, August 17th at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where visitations are scheduled for Sunday, August 16th from 2 to 6. Burial will be in the Huntsville Cemetery.

William David "Bill" Fry

William David "Bill" Fry, 91, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Logan Acres.

He was born on October 26, 1917 in Bellefontaine to the late William C. and Florence Ethel (Rea) Fry.

On March 17, 1939 he married Doris Fern Park in Huntsville and she preceded him in death on August 17, 1986. Surviving is a daughter, Christy (Mark) Hurney of Cardington, OH; a sister, Ruth Murphy of West Liberty; three grandchildren, Kaci Kroninger and Aaron and Alexander Hurney; four great grandchildren; and three nephews, Ray, Richard, and Todd Murphy.

An electrician for Dayton Power & Light, he was an Army veteran serving in WWII. Bill was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, a 1935 graduate of Huntsville High School, a volunteer for Bellefontaine Box 15 Fire Dept. and a member of the V.F.W.

Pastor Kevin Boggs will conduct a funeral service at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 8th at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where friends may call one (1) hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Highland Memorial Cemetery with military honors by the Logan County Honor Guard.

Paul F. Gies

Paul Frederick "Fritz" Gies, 64, of Jackson Center passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2009 at 5:25 a.m.

He was born on December 24, 1944 in Sidney, Ohio the son of the late Alexander and Esta E. Helmlinger Gies.

He worked as a security guard at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney and formerly worked as a security guard at General Dynamics in Lima. He was a 1962 graduate of Jackson Center High School, and an Army Veteran in the KMAG Unit in Korea. He was a Deputy with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office from 1968 thru 1977 and served as interim sheriff in January of 1976. He was a former charter member and trustee of the Jackson Center Rescue Squad, former member of Buckeye State Sheriff's Association, National Sheriff's Association and he retired from the Jackson Center Fire Department in 1999 after 37 years of service.

He is survived by three daughters, Paula (David) Applegate, Pittsboro, North Carolina, Darcy (Gary) Schmerge, Botkins and Andrea (Derick) Lambert of Jackson Center; twin grandchildren, Olivia Elizabeth and Zachary Alexander Welly; beloved friend, Lucille Haas of Wapakoneta; an aunt, Catherine (Walt) Gerkey of Sidney; uncles, Paul Helmlinger, Botkins, Ohio, John Gies of Sidney and Gary Meeker of Jackson Center; and close cousin, Ronald Gies, Jackson Center.

Fritz was an honest and trustworthy man who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We mourn at the loss of someone so very special to us, but share in the faith that Fritz had in the Promise of God and look forward to the glad and permanent reunion.

Services will be held at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Montra on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 11 a.m. with Pastor William Barrett officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 from 2 - 4 & 6 - 8 p.m. at Sanford Funeral Home, Jackson Center and one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Elizabeth L. Castle-Hoylman, 47, of Urbana, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at her residence.

She was born on December 1, 1961 in Kenton, OH to Robert F. and Gloria (Wooley) Duff.

On June 18, 1983 she married David W. Castle and he preceded her in death on June 18, 1996. Also preceding her in death is her father, Robert F. Duff and a brother, Mike Duff.

On May 30, 1997 she married Joseph D. Castle-Hoylman in Belle Center and he survives along with her mother, Gloria. Also surviving is her daughter, Haley Castle of Cincinnati and a son, Drew (Laura Kerns) Castle of Urbana; two sisters, Susan (Dave) Johns of Belle Center and Mary (Darrel) Stumbo of Bellefontaine; a brother, James (Pam) Duff of West Liberty; a sister-in-law,
Lynn Duff of Bellefontaine; father-in-law, Wayne Holylman; mother-in-law, Virginia Speicher; and several nieces & nephews.

Elizabeth, along with her husband Joe, owned and operated the Patrick House Bed and Breakfast in Urbana.

She was a member of the Belle Center United Methodist Church and attended the Mechanicsburg Christian Fellowship Church.

Visitations are scheduled for Wednesday, August 5th from 2 to 8 at the Kauffman-Eichholtz Funeral Home in West Liberty. Rev. Kevin Smith will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 6th at the Urbana Christian Fellowship Church in Urbana with visitation from 10 to 11. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty.

Helen Sophia Griffith, 92, of Kenton, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2009 at Heartland of Bellefontaine.

She was born on November 17, 1916 in Shelby County to the late George and Emma (Klopfenstein) Mann.

On September 15, 1936, she married Charles H. Griffith in Botkins, OH and he preceded her in death on July 17, 1982. He is also preceded in death by a stillborn son and a sister, Lucille Oakley.

Surviving are two sons, Richard Griffith of Kenton and Donald M. (Jean) Griffith of Bellefontaine; a brother, Luther (Harriet) Mann of Jackson Center; three grandchildren, Andrea (Cale) Jacobs of Huntsville, Annetta (Doug) Chappell of Bellefontaine, and Mark Griffith of Orlando, FL; and three great grandchildren, Alex & Clay Jacobs and Annika Chappell.

A homemaker and a farmer's wife, Helen was a member of the Belle Center United Presbyterian Church and an honorary life member of the United Presbyterian Women. She served as the Memorial Secretary and also taught Sunday school. She was a 50 year member and Past Matron of the Chapter #312 Order of Eastern Star in Belle Center and then a member of the Chapter #459 Order of Eastern Star in Bellefontaine.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4th from 11 to 1 at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Belle Center where Rev. Kathy Clark will conduct a funeral service beginning at 1:30 pm on Tuesday. There will be an Order of Eastern Star service at 1:15 pm. Burial will follow at the Glen Cemetery in Port Jefferson, OH.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Belle Center United Presbyterian Church, 202 E. Walnut St., Belle Center, OH 43310.

William T. "Sarge" Slaughter

William T. "Sarge" Slaughter, 57, of Belle Center, passed away Friday, July 31, at Mansfield Med Central in Mansfield, OH.

He was born on February 25, 1952, in Schetzingen, Germany, to the late Vernon J. Slaughter & Friedel Kelley. On December 7, 1985, he married the former Andrea Hower in Lima.

He is survived by his wife, Andrea; five children: Jessica (Bob) Bean, Columbus, OH, AJ (Stephanie) McMillen, Columbus, OH, Megan (John Phlipot) McMillen, Covington, OH, Paul (Beth) Hartman, Pickerington, OH, and Brad (Stacy) Hartman, Cridersville, OH; six grandchildren: Molly, Lydia, Julia, Alex, Derek, and Ryan; five sisters: Linda (Jerry) Vermillion, Lima, OH, Patricia (Ted) Hunt, Gomer, OH, Robin Lauck, Belle Center, OH, Janet (Steve) Bechtel, Belle Center, OH, Bonnie (Guy) Suan, Middlepoint, AK; a brother: Alfred (Melinda) Slaughter, Lima, OH; several neices and nephews, and his dog, Casey.

He attended Lima Senior High School prior to entering the US Marine Corp in 1969, where he served in Vietnam and earned his Purple Heart. He retired in June 2008 from Honda of America after 20 years. He was a member of Indian Lake Moose Lodge #1533, Lakeview, and American Legion Post #96, Lima. He was a dedicated father and enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. Sarge loved life and never knew a stranger. He enjoyed playing Santa Claus as well as riding his motorcycle, sports including shooting pool, softball, bowling, golf, boating, and playing cards with his family and friends.

Funeral Services will be conducted by Pastor John Thomas Hower at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 4th, at Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview. Visitation will be Monday, August rd, from 1-3:30 and 5:30-8:00 p.m. with American Legion services beginning at 5:30p.m. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services on Tuesday. Memorial Contributions may be given in his name to Friends Serving Friends of Indian Lake.

Dallas Ann Ritter Else, 75, Columbus (formerly of Bellefontaine) passed away Friday, July 31st, at her residence in Columbus.

Visitation is from 4:30 to 6:30 on Monday, August 3rd, at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine.

Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, August 4th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bellefontaine Cemetery.
