Tigers take tri-match, set school record

The West Liberty-Salem Tigers recently brought home honors in a boys golf tri-match against Waynesfield-Goshen and New Knoxville.

The Tigers carded a 312 to Waynesfield's 324 and New Knoxville's 360.

For the Tigers, Ben Rutan was the medalist with a 73.

Other Tiger duffers:
Ryan Meister (75), Derrick Overholt (81), TR Nisonger & Ryan Ropp (83); and Chris White (84).

The Tigers set a new 18-hole school record in the match, improving to 3-0 on the season. The previous record was set in 1987.

The JV team brought home a 2nd place finish, with a 387 to Waynesfield's 369 and New Knoxville's 444.

For the Tigers: Greg White (85), Landon Hormann (90), Zach Taylor (101), and Jacob Shoemaker (111).

WL-S next tees up in the Marysville Invitational on Monday at the Marysville Golf Club.

West Liberty-Salem golfers win season opener

The West Liberty-Salem golf team defeated Houston 171 to 192 to open the season Thursday at Liberty Hills.

Ben Rutan was medalist with a 40. TR Nisonger and Derrick Overholt both shot 43's, Chris White turned in a 45, and Ryan Meister and Greg White rounded out the field with 46's.

The Tigers' next match is Friday at Waynesfield-Goshen at Prairie View Golf Course.

In JV action, Houston was the winner.

Top scores for West Liberty-Salem were Ryan Ropp with a 42, Zach Taylor with a 47, and Landon Hormann with a 50.

Chieftain golfers open season with league win

The Bellefontaine varsity and JV boys golf teams opened the season with wins Tuesday at Sugar Isle against host Dayton Stebbins.

In varsity, the Chiefs beat the Indians 177-184.

Caleb Elkins was medalist with a 1-under 35.

Christian Garlock shot a 44, Dylan Davis and Travis Fowler each fired a 49, Sean Hartley recorded a 54, and Luke Heath added a 58.

The JV Chiefs won 215-224.

Rossi Clark was medalist with a 50.

Ross Leasure followed with a 52, Gage Scott recorded a 54, Ryan Rogan shot a 59, Mason Coleman had a 60, and Caleb Ballinger finished with a 63.

Bellefontaine will be back in action in a Preseason CBC tournament Thursday at Reid Park in Springfield.

Local racers shine in quarter midgets

Mac-O-Chee Quarter Midget Racing Association members traveled to Kokomo, Indiana last weekend for the 5th leg of the Generation Next Tour.

Chase Dean was a multiple trophy winner capturing 1st place in Light Mod, 2nd place in Light 160, and 3rd place in Senior Honda. In Senior Stock, it was a 1st & 2nd place finish for Mac-0-Chee drivers Cooper Clouse and Daniel McPherson. Logan McPherson was awarded the 3rd place trophy in the Light B division.

Racers will travel to Whiteland, Indiana on Saturday as part of the Midwest Thunder Series event for a unique opportunity to compete on a 1/10 mile paved track.

Racing action returns to the West Liberty Lions Club Park on Friday, August 21st for the Friday Night Shootout Series beginning at 7 p.m. A regular weekly event follows on Saturday, August 22nd at 4 p.m. with a special 40-lap Light 160 feature. Local kart racer goes to Lil Indy

Tyler Ransbottom, a sophomore at Bellefontaine High School, raced at Lil Indy in Carrothers, Ohio on Saturday.

The BHS student finished fifth place and fourth place in the two races in which he competed. The fifth place came in the Stock Lite Division and the fourth in the O.S.O. Lite Division.

Ransbottom started in the 11th position each time.

Bellefontaine youth inducted into Hall of Fame

The Bellefontaine traveling youth baseball team finished with a 5-3 record in the Cooperstown tournament in Cooperstown, New York.

The team opened the tournament with a win over a Northern Virginia squad 8-6. Another win over a Burlingame, California team followed with a score of 8-5.


A Pennsylvania team was next on the menu as Bellefontaine trounced them 14-0. The pitching and defensive dominance continued when the team blanked a Syracuse, New York squad 9-0.


A couple of losses to South New Jersey (18-6) and Illinois (16-4) gave Bellefontaine a 39 seed in the 104-team field.


The team earned two byes and then won a game against Bloomington, Minnesota with a score of 5-0. The team lost in the fourth round to Potomac, Virginia, 7-2.


After the tournament, the team was inducted into the Youth Baseball Hall of Fame.


Bellefontaine's season record comes to 39-6.

The team includes Matt Entsminger, Tyler Jones, Connor Burton, Jarrod Houchin, Jake Kennedy, Andrew Mitchell, Jordan Baughman, Joey Oliver, Rian Lopez, Aaron Rutherford, Tristin Tillman, Skylar Heilman and Gauge Hayman.

LCS Elite conducts soccer camp

The Logan County Soccer Elite hosted a soccer camp last weekend with many area players participating.

Coaches and players from Columbus, Marysville, Sidney and area schools like Riverside, West Liberty, Benjamin Logan and Indian Lake turned out for the event. The participants were mostly Indian Lake middle school students.

The camp put the players through eight skill set stations, taught proper stretching techniques, advised about nutrition and competed in 4-vs-4 games.

A "best camper" award was given to Mitch Schwieterman, a fifth-grader from Indian Lake. Coaches considered effort, attention to coaches, attitude and teamwork in making the decision.

Seven teams competed in the 4-vs-4 games, with the team of Aubrey Kabua, Tyler Rode, Connor Davis and Brandon Gillen winning the championship.

Shady Bowl welcomes Main Event, makes up races

The Main Event Racing Series (MERS) sponsored by Carter Lumber made a stop at Shady Bowl this weekend.

The Series travels around Ohio and Michigan, allowing drivers a chance to compete in the Main Event Classic at Columbus Motor Speedway in the fall.

Mike Stacy, of Enon, Ohio was first across the finish line in the main event. Shawn Stroble of Urbana finished fifth.

The usual classes were also in action, with the Sport Stocks, Pro-4s, Compacts and Detroit Irons competing. All but the Pro-4 ran double-features to make up for last week's rain out.

Chad Fiessinger won the make up race in the Sport Stock division, with Chris Abbott winning the scheduled race.

The Compacts featured two wins by Mason Patrick, who has dominated the division this season in his Ford Probe.

Kenny Snyder won the Pro-4 feature and Jerry Ellis Sr. took the checkered flag in both Detroit Iron events.

On August 15, the American Modified Series returns to Shady Bowl. Sport Stocks, Pro-4s, Compacts and Late Models will also be racing. The events start at 7 p.m.
