Chiefs Rout Opener At Wapakoneta
8/29/2009
Bellefontaine answered a lot of questions about their young team Friday night as they went to Wapakoneta, avoided the thunderstorms and dispatched the Redskins 45-0 at newly refurbished Harmon Field.
Junior fullback Preaston Artis and senior wing back Justin Baughman each rushed for over one hundred yards and a combined three touchdowns to pace Bellefontaine. After a scoreless first quarter that was highlighted by a Chieftain defensive goal line stand holding the Redskins scoreless after obtaining first and goal from the five yard line, Bellefontaine struck twice in the second quarter.
Artis got the Chiefs on the board for the first time with a four yard romp with 6:31 left in the half. Wapakonta looked like they were going to run the clock out and and head into halftime down 7-0, but a Redskin fumble was recovered by Bellefontaine on the Wapak 23 yard line. Chieftain quarterback Brandon Winter wasted no time finding wide out
TJ Garman on a 23 yard fade for a touchdown in the back right corner of the endzone. A shocked Wapakoneta team found themselves down 14-0 at the half.
The third quarter removed all doubt as to who would win the game. Jordan Price kicked a 26 yard field goal and Baughman raced for a 17 yard touchdown run to give the Chiefs a 24-0 lead after three quarters.
Artis scored his second touchdown of the night early in the fourth on a two yard dive and sophomore punt returner
Daulton Mosbarger provided the most electric play of the night with a seventy - five yard punt return for a touchdown. Sophomore fullback Jamel Sheley capped off the scoring with a one yard touchdown late in the game to cement a Bellefontaine 45-0 win.
Fullback Preaston Artis and placekicker Jordan Price were named the State Farm Insurance players of the game.
Chieftain head coach Jason Brown spoke after the game. Bellefontaine (1-0) hosts Sidney in week two.

Blue Knights drop season opener
8/28/2009
The Urbana University football team experienced a bit of déjà vu last night in their season opener against the University of Findlay. In last year’s opener, Findlay shut out Urbana 26-0 at Blue Knights Stadium. Thursday, the Blue Knights fell behind 28-0 in a 42-21 loss at Findlay’s Donnell Stadium.
After being shut out last season, the Blue Knights showed much improvement on offense. However, Urbana’s three late touchdowns weren’t enough after conceding too many first half points. Division II Findlay improves to 11-0 all-time against the D-II newcomers from Urbana.
The home team scored touchdowns on their first two possessions. A missed field goal and a Troy Brookins’ interception in the end zone stymied the Oilers’ next two possessions. Findlay capitalized on a couple Blue Knight turnovers right before the half to take the 28-point lead.
Findlay’s lead grew to 35 at the start of the third quarter after a 5-play 71-yard scoring drive capped by Demetrius Trapps’ 40-yard touchdown scamper.
Urbana got on the board later in the third when sophomore quarterback Evan Gehlert found senior tight end Tariq Kalimullah for a 10-yard touchdown.
At the start of the fourth quarter, the Blue Knights showed some life. They led off the quarter with a 13-play scoring drive to cut the deficit to 35-14. Gehlert connected with sophomore wide receiver Diamond Hart for the 8-yard score.
Findlay’s Demetrius Trapps appeared to stop the Blue Knight threat with his second touchdown run of 40-plus yards, but Urbana refused to quit. Blue Knight Troy Brookins delivered with his second big play of the night when he returned the ensuing Oiler kickoff 87 yards for a score. Urbana then recovered an onside kick to keep hope alive, but a Findlay interception sealed the Blue Knights’ fate.
Despite the loss, several Blue Knights played well. Gehlert completed 19-of-36 passes, for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. Kalimullah had 8 receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown. Wide receivers Ian Iler and Jerrell Leak each had 5 catches for 40-plus yards, and Hart had 3 catches for 39 yards and a score. On defense, senior Shawn Lewis led the Blue Knights’ charge with 13 tackles. Linebackers Larry Shivers and Travis Brisco each contributed 10 tackles and a sack, and linebacker Chad Kinkead chipped in with 7 tackles.
The Blue Knights are off until next Saturday when they host the Bobcats from West Virginia Wesleyan College in their home opener. Kickoff is slated for noon at Urbana’s Blue Knights Stadium.
