Close games highlight Football Friday Night Scoreboard
9/05/2009
Close contests were the order, for the most part, as week 2 in high school football featured close games and an overtime thriller.
In the feature game on 98.3 WPKO, it was the exception rather than the rule, as perennial powerhouse Coldwater took Ben Logan to the woodshed. Coldwater rolled up a 41-0 halftime lead before closing out the Raiders 41-7. Ben Logan falls to 0-2, while Coldwater remains unbeaten.
1390 the Bell featured a back and forth contest that saw two tie scores and three lead changes between Bellefontaine and Sidney. The Chiefs played from even or behind all of the first half, but for the second week in a row scored right before halftime and used a strong second half, taking control late in the game for a 30-20 victory, to push the Chieftains to 2-0. Sidney falls to 1-1. For a detailed recap, see the seperate game recap.
The exclusive PeakofOhio.com webcast game was the tightest of the night, with Riverside giving everything they had before a late fumble saw the Pirates fall to Triad 32-25 in overtime. For a detailed recap, see the seperate game recap.

Triad overcomes double-digit deficit in OT thriller against Riverside
9/05/2009
In a game that sometimes looked more like Clint Eastwood's The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly the Triad Cardinals and Riverside Pirates exchanged punches, penalties and costly turnovers in a 32-25 overtime thriller in front of a raucous, partisan packed house at Cardinal Stadium Friday night in a game that could only be heard on peakofohio.comDespite taking an early 7-0 lead on a Matt Freville touchdown pass to Kaleb Deam on the team's first possession of the game, Riverside stormed back, assisted in part by a myriad of Cardinals mistakes and a potent ground game, to stake claim to a 12-7 halftime advantage. That lead ballooned to 18-7 in the latter stages of third quarter when running back Joseph Coulson scampered to the endzone for a 32-yard touchdown run that, for the moment, gave the Pirates control of the game. Triad would not go away quietly, or at all really, and the Cardinal's furious comeback began when Kaleb Deam returned the ensuing kick-off 90 yards for a touchdown that pulled Triad to within four,18-14.The Pirate advantage dwindled even further after Cardinals kicker Daniel Kaffenbarger connected on a 41-yard field goal that cut the Riverside lead to a single point. Another Joseph Coulson touchdown scamper along with the subsequent PAT gave Riverside an eight-point advantage with just over six minutes remaining in the game. The ensuing possession saw Triad set up shop at its own 24-yard line with 5:59 on the clock needing a touchdown and a two-point conversation to knot the contest and have a chance to win the game. A third-and-29, two fourth-down conversions and an overturned interception later Triad found pay dirt on 12-yard run from running back Addison Ford. Freville connected with Deam on an out route along the left sideline to convert the two-point conversion and knot the game at 25 with just over two minutes to play.Though no one knew it at the time, Triad would take the lead for good on the third play of overtime when Freville found split end Nate Marks on a 19-yard touchdown pass to give Triad a 32-25 lead. The comeback was made complete after Pirate quarterback Bryce Hodge couldn't handle a low snap from center out of the shotgun and the Cardinals corralled the ball to end the game. With the win Triad's season record is now 1-1 and Riverside, with the loss, falls to 1-1.Triad travels to Fairbanks next week; Riverside is at West-Liberty Salem.
Next week's peakofohio.com exclusive game is Benjamin Logan at Mechanicsburg.
Chiefs Outlast Yellow Jackets In Home Opener
9/05/2009
Bellefontaine had to rally three times Friday night against Sidney, but was able to control the ball in the second half and defeat Sidney at home 30-20.
It looked like the Sidney running backs would all have big nights as Jack Foy, TJ Golden and Aaron Burns were all able to carve out big yards in the first half. Aaron Burns scored from eighteen yards out to give Sidney a 7-0 lead.
The Chiefs were forced to punt and Sidney was able to start their next drive at their own twenty yard line. At that point, Yellow Jacket quarterback Alex Lochard had his pass batted up in the air and defensive lineman Tony Robinson picked it out of the air and rumbled for a 20 yard touchdown return. Jordan Prices kick tied the game at seven.
Sidney regained the lead in the second quarter when TJ golden punched it into the endzone from one yard out to go up 14-7.
Chieftain quarterback Brandon Winter then led Bellefonatine on an 80 yard touchdown drive, highlighted by a
52 yard pass to Garret Pickering and capped off by a four yard
Preston Artis touchdown run. That tied the game at 14 at the half.
Price booted a 35 yard field goal early in the third quarter to give Bellefontaine their first lead of the night at 17-14. The lead was rather short lived, however when Lochard found Foy for a long touchdown late in the third quarter. Sidney's extra point was no good which kept the Yellow Jacket's lead to 20-17.
Brandon Winter again, led Bellefontaine on a long drive highlighted by a
29 yard pass to TJ Garman and capped off with a
Justin Baughman 13 yard touchdown run. Baughman would punch in another 4 yard touchdown late in the game to clinch the win with a 30-20 win.
Winter was named the WBLL State Farm Insurance Player of the game by passing 7/11 for 117 yards and rushing for over 60 yards. Justin Baughman led the team in rushing with 19 carries for 73 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Garman caught four passes for sixty five yards while Pickering added three catches for seventy eight yards.

We have a little break before our big game with Benjamin Logan next Wednesday, which is always an exciting match."Benjamin Logan fell at Kenton Ridge 6-1.The Cougars took control early and led 3-0 at the half.Billy Simpkins scored his team's goal on a penalty kick.Benjamin Logan and Kenton Ridge are both 2-1.Raiders head coach Jamie Hughes said, "I guess I have mixed feelings about this game. In the first half I didn't think we were very tough, nor very intelligent, and I thought we played like we were scared. All of which are traits that do not lead to success on the field which is why we were down 3-0 at the half. We talked about being tougher and playing more possession in the second half and I thought we turned things around a bit. We played harder and smarter and we were awarded with many more opportunites. We're still learning to play together with new personnel and some new positions but we made progress in the second half. KR is a good team with the best player in the Dayton area and maybe in the state in D2. It was a learning situation for us tonight so hopefully we'll bounce back and be ready for a very good Bellefontiane team next week."There was no reserve game.Indian Lake lost at Tecumseh 7-0.The Lakers trailed 3-0 at the half.Coach Shoffstall's team is now 0-4, 0-1.Varsity girls:Bellefontaine defeated host Urbana 3-0.Regan Price scored two goals and Ebony Newman recorded a goal and an assist.Allie Turner added an assist.Keeper Jessica Smith earned her first shutout of the season. The Chiefs are 2-1, 1-0.BHS will visit Kenton on Saturday. Players lack the heart and hustle out on the field. Until we have that, we will continue to play poorly. As coaches, we know what they can do, however they have to want it and have the determination themselves in order to play the way we know they can. We take each practice and game day-by-day to work on improving and providing them with the skills needed to be successful. Once they step out on the field, it is up to them and they are not using what they know. We have to be more aggressive on and off the ball without hesitation. Opportunities were provided, we did not take them."

Riverside rallies to beat Benjamin Logan, Doty gets first career win (Audio included)
8/31/2009
It took an extra 24 hours, but the Raiders and Pirates finally met on the football field for the first time in more than a decade Saturday night at Riverside High School. The Raiders were sharp from the beginning scoring on their opening drive thanks to a Landon McKirahan 30-yard touchdown run making it 7-0 in the first quarter. The Raiders would strike again in the second quarter with McKirahan again getting the ball in the endzone with a 11-yard, but the extra point was no good and the score was 13-0. The Pirates didn't have much to show offensively in the first half until their final drive before halftime went all the way down inside the Raiders 30-yard line. But the Ben Logan defense held the at the half it was Benjamin Logan 13 Riverside 0. The Pirates began the third quarter as if shot out of a cannon. The first play from scrimmage saw Gunner Whitaker rip off a big run in to Ben Logan territory. A few plays later the Pirates were knocking on the door at the Raiders 22-yard line. Then after a bad snap and a loss of 9 yards the next play saw the Raiders defense make another big play when they intercepted Bryce Hodge's pass. The Raiders seemed to have a hold on the game with their offense eating away the clock until very late in the third quarter when Raiders quarterback Dustin Bowers fumbled the ball on the 50-yard line. Pirates defensive lineman Brian Hayman scooped the ball up and rumbled down the field for a momentum changing touchdown. With :02 left in the third quarter after the extra point Riverside trailed 13-7. The fourth quarter belonged to Riverside. After forcing a Raiders punt the Pirates pulled out their bag of tricks on second down they ran a reverse to Joseph Coulson. 54-yards later Coulson and the Pirates were celebrating a tying touchdown with the extra point to come. Meade nailed the point after and Riverside led 14-13 with 8:28 remaining. The Riverside defense would hold twice on the Raiders and after the clock ticked off Riverside celebrated an opening night victory of Benjamin Logan. This marks the first coaching win for Pirates skipper T.R. Doty and the first opening night win for Riverside in quite a few years. Listen to Doty recap the game with Chad Wilkinson.
Benjamin Logan was without the services of senior Eric Bayliss who did not play due to injury. They also did not have their normal kicker who's main sport is soccer and since it was Saturday night his team had a game. The Pirates (1-0) will travel to Triad next week while Benjamin Logan (0-1) will host powerhouse Coldwater.
