Chief’s Defense Dominant In Win Over Indian Lake
9/26/2009
Indian Lake only rushed for twenty-seven yards for the game as the Chieftain defense closed the running games en route to posting the team’s second shutout of the year. Justin Baughman rushed for one hundred forty yards and two touchdowns offensively for Bellefontaine. Baughman’s first score was a fifteen yard run off the right side that he cut back to the middle for his ninth touchdown of the season. Baughman would score his tenth of the season in the fourth quarter with a seven yard run.
Bellefontaine got things going early when Chief’s quarterback Brandon Winter found fullback Tevin Robinson across the middle. Robinson, who was starting in the place of the injured Preaston Artis, turned up field and completed a thirty eight yard gain. Winter capped off the drive with a fifteen yard touchdown pass to tight end Nate Dodds.
Robinson played a big role in Bellefontaine’s second scoring drive of the night when on his first carry of the season, rumbled thirty eight yards. That play set Baughman’s first score. After the first quarter, Bellefontaine led fourteen to nothing. That would remain the score at halftime after a scoreless second quarter.
Bellefontaine continued to roll in the third when Winter found Garret Pickering on a scrambling ten yard touchdown pass. Later in the third, Robinson would score his first touchdown of the year on a four yard touchdown run that was set up by a Pickering thirty eight yard reception. Baughman’s fourth quarter touchdown completed the scoring.
Bellefontaine rushed for a whopping 318 yards and Winter chipped in ninety one yards through the air. Indian lake’s Travis Ratliff passed for over 150 yards but the Lakers were held to only twenty seven yards on the ground.
After the game, Chief’s coach Jason Brown spoke on several topics:
- If last year’s loss to Indian Lake motivated the team for the game this year
- What has made the team so successful through five games
- the debuts of Tevin Robinson and Dalton Mosbarger
Bellefontaine is now 5-0 and host Dayton Stebbins next week. Indian Lake drops to 1-4 and host Northwestern next week for homecoming.

But I felt that we moved better in the second half, and we were more aggressive offensively. We have some confidence going into Monday night's match with Tipp City. Head coach Jamie Hughes said, “This was a very tough loss because I know we are a better squad than Stebbins. We dominated the first half with opportunity after opportunity but were only able to get one on the board. When they lost a player at half due to the red card we correctly predicted that the other 10 men would really pick up their play and give us more of a fight. What I didn't expect was for us to stop playing with the same type of urgency we played with during the first half. It was obvious from the opening kick of the second half that they had stepped up their intensity and we did not match it. I'm disappointed for the guys because it was a game that we should have had a better result than a loss. We now have to show our character and bounce back strong on Monday because the Lake game will be a battle.”

Shady Bowl crowns track champions
9/21/2009
Shady Bowl Speedway hosted its final points race Saturday, with champions being crowned in all divisions.
The first feature was the Pro-4 20 lapper that saw Beavercreek resident Kenny Snyder take advantage of Steve Clarkson’s mechanical failure to secure the top spot in the race. Snyder, behind the wheel of his Deck Pro sponsored Mustang, went on to claim the win and wrap up the track championship. Josh Sage was second, with fast qulaifier David Gerstner third. Donnie Hall finished fourth with Rodney Schrack fifth.
The late model feature turned out to be the best race of the night. Craig Borland took the lead at the start, only to be passed by Jim Lewis Jr. on lap two. Lewis led until lap thirteen when Brad Yelton took over for one lap. Lewis then regained the lead for the next two counters. Yelton and Lewis had a great battle, before Yelton put his Jeff’s Welding Monte Carlo out front for good on lap seventeen. The win was the first for Yelton in only his second start in a late model. Chris Parker put pressure on Yelton, but came up just short. Mark Parker was third, with Lewis fourth and Borland fifth. The dash went to Rodney Roush with Lewis taking the heat. Nathan Herron was officially crowned the track champion.
The Compacts hit the oval next, with Mason Patrick taking the lead as the field entered turn one. It was quickly apparent that Patrick’s Ford was the car to beat as he opened up a lead in the Kirby Auto Parts sponsored racer. Patrick led all 20 laps to notch the victory, with Steven Salyers a close second. Kyle Stagers, Kelsey Flynn, and Josh Sage rounded out the top five. Sage wrapped up the points battle as the leader. Salyers and Dustin Young were winners in heat action.
The Modifieds were next in line, with Rodney Roush taking the lead at the drop of the green flag. Roush paced the field the entire 25 laps to win in his S & B Towing ride to post his first ever modified feature win. Buddy Townsend, making his ‘09 Shady Bowl debut, was second, followed by fast qualifier Chad Poole, Brian Brandyberry, and Ray Muncey. Rob Yelton was the dash winner, with Mike Pippin taking the heat.
The Sport Stocks were next up, as Aaron Pippin put his H&R Block Chevy home first in the 20 lapper. He led all the way. Chad Fiessinger, Rodney Roush, Richard Roush, and Chris Abbott rounded out the top five. Rodney Roush won the heat and locked up the track championship.
In Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association action, Brandon Bayse locked up the championship with a win in his NAPA of Piqua car by winning the 20 lap main. Bob Bayse, Daniel Wirick, fast qualifier K.D. Knodler, and Max Evans rounded out the top five. Knodler carried the checker for the heat race.
