Chiefs, Raiders Volley For The Cure – Volleyball Scoreboard (Audio and picture included)
10/06/2009
The Bellefontaine Varsity Volleyball team hosted its first Volley For The Cure match against Benjamin Logan Tuesday night.
The Chiefs fell to the Raiders in straight games, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-23. At least for one night though, the game was secondary.
The Volley For The Cure program began three years ago by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association as a way for the state’s high school volleyball programs to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer and breast cancer research.
Tuesday’s match saw two teams playing for an illness that is probably a little too familiar to both schools.
In 2005 BHS teacher Kristina Mount was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive breast cancer. Fortunately, early detection allowed Mount to survive her bout with the horrific illness.
Tuesday’s Volley For The Cure match was the second such event for Benjamin Logan; the event is also very personal to members of the Raiders’ volleyball squad.
Sharon VanWinkle, the mother of Raiders volleyball coach Gretchen Powell, fought her own battle with breast cancer in the last year. However, a year filled with extensive treatment has VanWinkle on the road to recovery, too.
Both Mount and VanWinkle were in attendance Tuesday night and were named honorary coaches for the match.

Caroline Lehmon had 17 digs, Brooke Erwin added 13 digs and 1 ace, and Jessica Davia recorded 19 assists, 2 kills, and 1 ace.

Bellefontaine will host Kenton Ridge tomorrow at six o’clock.
BHS head coach Steve Henry said, "This is the fastest that any Bellefontaine team has won 10 games. It's great to coach a team like this, because they not only want to win - they know how to go out and do it. Our defense has been solid all season. They held Stebbins to 3 or 4 shots all night. If we can keep that kind of defensive intensity, then we can really look to be more aggressive offensively. We play Kenton Ridge on Wednesday, and we'll need to be strong in the back, because they have a couple of forwards that can really play. We have to limit their touches on the ball if we want to shut them down. It should be a good match."
Indian Lake beat Graham 2-0.
Dylan Stites and Jordan Kenton each scored in the second half.
Jacob Harshfield added an assist.
The Lakers had eight shots on goal, while the Falcons were held to three shots on goal.
Keeper Stanley Beatty earned the shutout.

The Raiders will visit Greenon tomorrow.
Benjamin Logan head coach Jamie Hughes said, “I'll be frank, I thought our effort in the first half was very poor. I don't know where we get the attitude from that we don't have to come ready to play. Urbana came out with a sense of urgency and tenacity that we didn't match until after halftime. The second half we decided to increase our work rate and play with some intensity and we pretty much dominated play. Shots in the first half were 2-2 and for the game 14-4 but we have to do a better job of finishing. Until that happens, we will continue to struggle to find victories.”

Pippin and Durflinger race to wins in Shady Bowl season finale
10/05/2009
Shady Bowl closed out the ’09 season Saturday night with a wild evening of racing and thrills.
The season closer featured the trailer races, compacts, sports stocks, and a roll over contest.
The sport stock main was won by Bellefontaine driver Aaron Pippin in his H&R Block sponsored Monte Carlo. The win closed out a very successful season for Pippin, who thanked his family for helping to keep his ride in peak condition all season.
The 20 lap compact main was won by Bellefontaine’s Justin Durflinger. It marked the first win of the season for the second-generation driver. Mike Shaeffer, Dustin Young, Brian Temple, and Amber Sites rounded out the top five. Mason Patrick set fast time and won the heat.
The 10 lap Detroit Iron main was won by Jeff Ellis Jr. of DeGraff. Ellis was driving his first ever race in the Gary’s Auto Parts Cadillac. The win was popular with the fans, as Ellis, who is in the military, leaves in a month for a tour of duty in Iraq.
The wild trailer race followed with 26 drivers taking the green in cars and trucks towing everything from campers and boats to home made trailers. The action was as usual a crowd pleaser, with several red flags to clear the track of overturned trucks and debris. The race turned out to be a car and truck battle with John Painter in his full size Chevy pickup and C. J. Shroyer in a Toyota. The fans were cheering the Toyota on, as they rooted for the underdog, but it soon became apparent it was no match for the truck. A hard hit to the right front of the Toyota ended the night with Painter taking the win.
