Bellefontaine knocks off pesky Greenville in tournament soccer, Raiders fall at home (Audio and picture included)
10/20/2009
Kraig Strayer and Anthony Vicario both scored headers of corner kicks late in the second half as the number 2 seeded Bellefontaine Chieftains eliminated the thirteen seeded Greenville Greenwave 2-0 Tuesday night in boys tournament soccer at Bellefontaine’s Dodd Stadium.
Greenville came in with just one win on the season after graduating sixteen seniors off of last year’s thirteen-win team, but gave Bellefontaine all they could handle keeping the game scoreless at halftime. Bellefontaine thought they had a goal with 20 seconds left in the first half when a goal by Strayer was called off after a late offside call.
Strayer got it back at the 13-minute mark of the second half, heading a Robbie Ball corner kick into the net. The Chiefs got their second goal when Vicario headed a corner kick in at the five-minute mark.
Bellefontaine (13-3-1) will host Milton-Union (4-10-3) Saturday night at seven o’clock at Dodd Stadium.
Listen to Bellefontaine coach Steve Henry talk about the win.
Michael Elizondo looks to throw in a ball Tuesday night as Bellefontaine defeated Greenville 2-0.
The Benjamin Logan boys soccer team fell to visiting Milton-Union 2-1 in the opening round of the tournament Tuesday night.
The Raiders led 1-0 at the half as Dale Allen scored off a Cory Leiter pass just 5 minutes into the game.
Milton-Union tied the game at the 28 minute mark of the second half when they scored off a rebound.
The Bulldogs scored the game-winner on a cross with fifteen minutes remaining in the game.
Milton-Union improves to 4-10-3.
Benjamin Logan finishes the season 4-13.
Raiders head coach Jamie Hughes said, “We knew it would be a tight game and it would probably come down to one goal and we were right, unfortunately we just came up a bit short. After leading 1-0 at the half we felt pretty good about how we were playing. We had a couple of chances there in the first half when Leiter and Leis were both knocked down from behind in the box on breakaways that we thought might have warranted a penalty but didn't get the call but we were still happy to have the lead at the half. The second half was them getting a couple of breaks and they capitalized on their two opportunities. I cannot fault our kids effort or their desire. I was proud of the way they played tonight; they played their hearts out and left it all out on the field. Our kids have played and conducted themselves with class on the field all season long and tonight was no different. We have great kids and even though we didn't win as many as we might have liked, they've been a joy to work with all season.”
West Liberty-Salem handled Tri-Village 5-1.
Northeastern beat Graham 5-2.
Springfield Shawnee edged Urbana 2-1.

Hillclimbers Hold Off Tigers in Girls Tournament Soccer, Lady Chiefs advance
10/20/2009
The West Liberty-Salem Lady Tigers hosted fellow Champaign County school Urbana Monday night to open the girls Division II Sectional tournament. The #6 seeded Lady Tigers were coming off their best regular season in their brief seven year history while the Hillclimbers seeded #8 were looking for revenge from an early season loss to WLS.
Play was back-and-forth for the first ten minutes of the match with West Liberty-Salem starting to dominate play. The Tigers would get a golden opportunity early in the match with a wide open shot at the goalie for Urbana only to see the shot go high and bounce off the bar and come out. The Tigers would score first as Katie Detwiler used her head (and foot) as the goalie came out and slipped after the ball Detwiler knew no one was behind her as she got turned around facing away from the goal she simply kicked the ball with the her heel swinging her leg backwards to push the ball through the goal for a 1-0 Tigers lead with just over 24:00 left in the first half.
Things were quiet for the next several minutes until Urbana had an injured player. Suffering from an apparent leg injury which halted play for a few minutes the Hillclimbers seemed to use that as motivation as Urbana hit the net just a few minutes after the injury with a header from Steffenson off a corner-kick to tie the game at 1-1 with a little over 8:00 remaining in the half.
Another Urbana injury just minutes later would again spark the Hillclimbers. There was a ten minute delay for an Urbana player who reportedly dislocated her ankle trying to save a ball from going out of bounds near midfield. She was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for further evaluation. That seemed to spark the Urbana team again because 12 seconds after play resumed Christy Finney broke free between two WLS defenders and snuck a shot past the goalie for a 2-1 Urbana lead late in the first half.
The Hillclimbers would receive a gift early in the second half as the Tigers were whistled for a handball inside their box which resulted in a penalty kick. Another goal would be huge for Urbana, but the shot would sail over the goal and result in a goal kick.
The Tigers couldn’t get anything going offensively in the second half until the final ten minutes of the game. As time continued to tick away the Tigers would start getting shots on goal, but the Urbana keeper kept turning them away. In the final minute of the game WLS would pull their goalie all the way up the field and continue to pressure Urbana. As the last ten seconds ticked off WLS would have a decent look with a shot from the top of the box, but it would sail high over the goal and out of bounds and the game was over as Urbana celebrated a 2-1 victory over West Liberty-Salem.
The Tigers went 9-7-1 this year.
Urbana will now host Miami East Thursday night in the Sectional Semi-Final as the Vikings upset #3 seed Anna 2-1.
