Leonard B. Jacobs

Leonard Jacobs 11-30-09 Leonard B. Jacobs, 78, of Lakeview, passed away Monday, November 30, 2009, at his residence.

He was born in Kenton, Ohio on May 17, 1931, a son of the late Lester and Florence Rodgers Jacobs. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Kay Mummey, and a brother, Ralph Jacobs.

On February 18, 1951, he married the former Wilma Van Buskirk of Marion, and she preceded him in death in July 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie (Kim) Kress of Bellefontaine; two sons, Gary (Elaine) Jacobs of Lakeview, and Cale (Andrea) Jacobs of Huntsville; one sister, Donna Mae Eaton of North Fort Myers, FL; two brothers, Clarence “Jake” (Annie) Jacobs and Frank (Joan) Jacobs, both of Frostproof, FL; six grandchildren, Suzanne and Connor Kress, Trevor, Erin, Alex, and Clay Jacobs; many nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Carol Skeen.

Leonard was a 1950 graduate of Kenton High School and member of Lewistown-Trinity United Methodist Church.

He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict where he served in a special missile training program in White Sands, NM.

He worked for the Ford Motor Company at the Lima Engine Plant for 38 years and was a member of UAW Local 1219.

He loved stockcar racing and in the mid-1950’s raced a stockcar at many local tracks. He, along with his family, has attended NASCAR races in Michigan for 40 years.

He coached baseball from T-Ball through ACME for 18 years. His teams won five Logan County Tournament Championships and his players went on to win a Three Rivers Conference league title in 1979 and two WCOC league titles in 1987 and 1988. He also served as a past president of the Lakeview Ball Association.

A faithful supporter of Indian Lake Athletics, he helped with numerous baseball field improvements over the years.

He enjoyed working with automobiles and spent countless hours in the restoration of many Ford vehicles, and entered several in many local car shows. He also built many homes in the Logan County area.

He was an avid covered bridge enthusiast and traveled throughout Ohio visiting over 200 bridges.

His greatest pleasure was attending athletic and music events of his grandchildren, for he enjoyed being a “Grandpa” most.

Pastor Barry Baughman officiates a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 4, 2009 at Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview. Visitation will be Thursday, December 3rd from 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is in Huntsville Cemetery with military rites by the Logan County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be given in his name to the Indian Lake High School Baseball Field Improvements Memorial Fund.

Dorothy Marie Eley Hunt

Dorothy Marie Eley Hunt, 86, of Bellefontaine, passed away Friday evening, November 27th in Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine.  She was born March 8, 1923 in Spencerville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Fred and Anna (Barrick) Eley.

She married Gail Hunt on April 6, 1946 in Lakeview and he survives in Bellefontaine.  Also surviving are two sons: Vernon Hunt of Bellefontaine and Stanley (Donna) Hunt of Dublin, Ohio, one brother Oliver Eley of Sidney, and two sisters; Annabelle Boshart of Englewood, Ohio and Arletha McDowell of Dayton. There are five grandchildren, two great grandchildren. One son Stephen Hunt and one grandchild preceded her in death.

She attended The First Church of God in Bellefontaine, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years.  She graduated from Stokes High School in 1942. She had worked for Westinghouse Corp., both in Lima and in Bellefontaine and later worked for Silco for 14 years.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday Dec. 2 at 11:00 am at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine with Rev. John Eley, Rev. A. W. Purdin, and Pastor Ray Headings officiating. Lois L. Stout

Lois L. Stout, 93, formerly of Belle Center, died Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Heartland of Bellefontaine. She was born March 3, 1916 in Belle Center, the daughter of the late Harry C. and Jane (Wylie) McCracken. She married John Ivan Stout on October 16, 1933 in Richmond, Indiana and he preceded her in death on March 5, 1996.

She is survived by her son, James E. (Maxine) Stout of Belle Center and her daughter Carol Kohli of Belle Center. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She was a member of the Belle Center United Presbyterian Church. She was a devoted homemaker and worked on the farm with her family.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday December 2 at 11:00 am at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Belle Center, with Rev. Kathy Clark officiating. Friends may call Tuesday from 4 until 7 at the funeral home in Belle Center. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Belle Center. Luella R. Miller Herring

Luella R. Miller Herring, 93, of formerly of Russells Point, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 2009, at Heartland of Indian Lake, Lakeview, Ohio.

She was born in Belle Center on May 12, 1916, a daughter of the late Albert and Ellie Schrader.

She married Marion Miller and he preceded her in death. She then married Truman D. Herring and he is deceased also.  Also preceding her in death is one brother and 5 sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce (Gene) Hansen, DeGraff; sons, C. Albert Miller of Monroe, Michigan, Earl (Gail) Miller, Troy and Thurman (LaFonda Biggs) Herring of Lakeview; 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild and several nieces & nephews.

She was a homemaker and formerly attended the Church of God in Russells Point. She enjoyed raising and caring for children and enjoyed cats.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Huntsville Cemetery, Huntsville, Ohio with Pastor Bryan Meadows officiating.

Scott Alan Musser, 43, of Bellefontaine, was found at his home Thursday, November 26, 2009.

He was born on March 29, 1966, in Bellefontaine, a son of Carey Alan and Sandra Lee Shultz Musser.

He is survived by his parents, his sister, Suzy (Doug) Headley of Bellefontaine and nieces, Katey and Liz Headley of Bellefontaine.

A 1984 graduate of Riverside High School. He worked as a computer operator at Honda of America. When he was able he participated in wheel chair races and wheel chair basketball.

The family will receive friends on Monday, November 30, 2009 from 12 to 2 p.m. prior to services which will begin at 2:00 PM at Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home, DeGraff. Burial will take place in Greenwood-Union Cemetery, DeGraff.

The family suggest memorial contributions be made to either Logan County Humane Society or Bravehart Camp.

Eloise Lavonne Siebeneck

Eloise Lavonne Siebeneck, 78, of Lakeview, passed away at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, November 26, 2009, at Lima Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Logan County on February 5, 1931, a daughter of the late Byron and Helen Margaret Knief McGowan.  She also was preceded in death by a grandson.

On August 10, 1972, she married Leonard A. Siebeneck and he preceded her in death on April 21, 1980.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy (Jerry) Shank of Lakeview; sons, Richard E. (Vicki) Powell of Lakeview and Steven (Patsy) Powell, of Bellefontaine; step-daughters, Jean (Ron) Pestel of Oahu, Hawaii, Mary Kies and Cathy Mobley; step-sons: Carl Siebeneck, Tony Siebeneck; brother; Max (Phyllis) McGowan of DeGraff and sisters, Eileen (Dennis) Lotz of Jackson Center and Beverly (Tom) Weiskittle of Quincy; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren & 2 Step-Great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She worked for Bulldog Electric for 8 years, was secretary at Landmark in Jackson Center for 10 years and was a realtor for Rohrer Realty, Lima for 15 years.

A member of the Muchinippi Church, Lewistown she was also a member of the Indian Lake Moose Lodge #1533 Women’s Auxiliary, Indian Lake Eagle#3615 F.O.E. Ladies Auxiliary and was on the Logan County Board of Elections for 18 years. She loved baking and crocheting for her grandchildren.

Pastor Ed Shady officiates a funeral at 11 a.m. Monday in the Myron Van Horn Chapel of Sanford-Eichholtz Funeral Home, Lakeview, where visitation is Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Burial is in Huntsville Cemetery.

Patricia Kinney 11-25-09 Patricia A. Kinney, 64, of Huntsville, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at her residence.

She was born on December 29, 1944 in West Liberty, OH to the late Dewey and Dorothy (Smith) Van Hoose.

Surviving is her loving companion for over 20 years, James W. Reish; a son, John Wayne Kinney of Clermont, FL; a daughter, Shirley Ann Kinney of Tampa, FL; Krystal (Blake) Radcliffe of Pemberville, OH who was like a daughter to Pat; brothers, Marion (Darlene) Van Hoose of Britchville, MI, Steve (Ann) Van Hoose of Cross City, FL, Donald (Pauline) Van Hoose of Orlando, FL, Ronald Van Hoose of Huntsville, OH, and Michael Gregory January of Clermont, FL; sisters, Diana (Roger) Horsley and Becky (Gary) Barger both of West Liberty, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death is an infant son, brothers, Dewey Jr. and Robert LeRoy Van Hoose; and sisters, Mary Lou Elliott and Lula Mae Trumblison.

A homemaker, Pat worked at D.A.B. and then at AcuSport for 20 years and enjoyed traveling and being with family. Pat was a person who cared and gave to her family and others.

Juanita Gertrude Barnhart

Juanita Gertrude Barnhart, 98, formerly of Rushsylvania, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at the Gables at Green Pastures in Marysville.

She was born on August 29, 1911 in Hardin County, OH to the late Minor and Jeanette (Hites) Longshore.

On February 6, 1930 she married Wilbur Barnhart in Toledo, OH and he preceded her in death on July 24, 1964. Also preceding her in death are three sons, Richard “Pete”, Lester and Paul Edward Barnhart; five brothers, Carl, Sidney, Perry, Irvin and Earl Longshore; and two sisters, Florence Herring and Ethel Ferguson.

Surviving is a daughter, Patricia Farrington of Richwood, OH; two daughters-in-law, Wanda Barnhart of Rushsylvania and Juanita Beoger of Springfield; nine grandchildren, Larry and Deb Farrington, Judy and Jim Ferguson, Kathleen and Kenny Pritchard, Beverly and Frank Jones, Tami and Vic Deere, Bonnie and Rod Lease, Deb and Dave Booher, Pam and Charlie Alexander, and Rose and Peter Brown; 20 great grandchildren and 28 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A homemaker, her and her husband owned and operated restaurants in Raymond and Kenton and were known for their homemade pies.

Juanita was a member of the Harper United Methodist Church for 50 years, the Rushsylvania Senior Citizens and the Rushcreek Grange. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks and Indian Lake with her brothers. She also enjoyed crocheting and playing cards.

Donald Kelly 11-23-09 Donald W. Kelly, 69, of Rushsylvania, passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at his residence.

He was born on March 30, 1940 in Logan County, OH to the late Howard and Josephine (Godwin) Kelly.

Surviving is his wife, Linda Tapp, whom he married on August 25, 1958 in Mt. Victory, OH. Also surviving are three daughters, Pamela (Rick) Crumm of Rushsylvania, Terri Thompson of Maynardville, TN and Lisa Huffman of Rushsylvania; three brothers, Richard (Kathy) Kelly of Ridgeway, Danny (Janet) Kelly of Kenton and Dennis (Kelly) Kelly of Ridgeway; a sister, Caroline (Earl) Definbaugh of Bellefontaine; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Don worked as a security guard for Mary Rutan Hospital. He was a standard bred harness racing driver and groomer. He drove stock cars, was a NASCAR racing fan, an OSU fan and enjoyed fishing.

Jeff Shoemaker 11-23-09 Jeff C. Shoemaker, 46, of West Liberty, passed away at 8:19 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 2009 as a result of an automobile accident on Co. Rd. 5 in Rushsylvania.

He was born in Urbana on January 20, 1963, a son of the late Tracy Shoemaker.  His mother, Marietta Murray Shoemaker survives him in Cable, Ohio.

On January 30, 1988, he married the former Crista Wenger and she survives along with daughter, Carrie Shoemaker; sons, Joshua and Jarrod Shoemaker; sisters, Priscilla Pratt of West Liberty and Joyce (Glenn) Griffin of Kingscreek, Ohio and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Karen Sue.

He was owner and operator of Shoemaker Excavating which he founded with his father and was a member of Ducks Unlimited and loved having cookouts with his family and spending time in the outdoors, especially doing excavating work and fishing.

Steven L. Sutherly

Steven L. Sutherly, 57, of Huntsville, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Mary Rutan Hospital.

He was born on October 21, 1952 in Kenton, OH to the late Melvin F. and Glesna G. (Iams) Sutherly.  Also preceding him in death is a sister, Lenore Kemppainen.

On April 30, 1973 he married Frances K. (Green) Sutherly in Rushsylvania and she survives along with their children, Jason (Tawney) Sutherly of Rushsylvania, Jennifer Lyn (Joseph) McKeithan of Pleasant Plain, OH and Tami (Jason Major) Rowe of Russells Point; four brothers, Jack (Ola) Sutherly of Richwood, Harold (Barb) Sutherly of Ada, David (Sidney) Sutherly of Bellefontaine and Dwight Sutherly of Nashville, TN; a sister, Karen (Jeff) Conley of Lima; and four grandchildren, Austin, Danae, Allison, & Makenzie.

Steve worked in Material Services for Honda of America and retired in October 2008.  He worked as a Taxidermist and owned and operated Steve’s Taxidermy.  He enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing and loved to spend time with his grandchildren.  He liked to watch hockey and was a Columbus Blue Jacket fan.

Visitation will be at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine on Friday, November 27th from 4 to 8.  Pastor Ronald Irick and Pastor Shelley Stevenson conduct a funeral service on Saturday, November 28 at 11:00am at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine.  Burial will follow in the Huntsville Cemetery.

Patricia Anne Montgomery Thompson

Patricia Anne Montgomery Thompson 11-22-09 Patricia Anne Montgomery Thompson, 80, of West Liberty, went to be with her Lord God on Friday, November 20, 2009 in the Green Hills Care Center. She was born on April 23, 1929, in Marion, Ohio, the daughter of the late Henry and Frances (Rice) Montgomery.

She married Fred Antrim Thompson on March 1, 1952 and he preceded her in death on June 30, 2007. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Melanie Ann Horn and a grandson, Matthew Horn.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Jonathan) Mathys and grandson Luke Mathys; granddaughter Jill (Chad) Horn Carey and great-grandchildren Ashtyn and Josh, all of Bellefontaine along with Dean, Mary Jean, and Kristyn Horn and sister in law Alice Berry, three nieces and two nephews.

She was a 76-year member of the Community Chapel in Zanesfield, where she and Fred were married. She was a 1948 graduate of Zanesfield High School.  She was also a 59-year member of the Zanesfield Worthwhile Club.

She loved helping and doing for others by a visitation ministry at Green Hills Retirement Community and Nursing Care Center. Before her retirement, she enjoyed baking and giving her cookies and pies to others.  During her brief cancer illness, she grew close to and had concern for her caretakers at Green Hills, her roommates, and the housekeeping staff.

Primarily a homemaker, she worked as a custodian and retired from the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center and enjoyed cleaning her church for many years.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Community Chapel in Zanesfield at 4:00pm on Saturday, December 5th with Pastor Keith Matthews officiating. Friends may visit and fellowship one hour prior to the service on Saturday from 3 to 4. There will be a meal provided after the service.

At Pat’s request, her body was cremated and her remains will be buried in Zanesfield Cemetery. Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine assisted the family with arrangements. James “Jim” I. Seeley

James Ivan Seeley 11-20-09 James “Jim” I. Seeley, 80, of Bellefontaine passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at the Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida.

He was born April 30, 1929 at the family farm near McMorran in Harrison Township, Ohio, the son of the late Perley Ray and Esther (Overholser) Seeley. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald and Wayne Seeley.

On September 7, 1951 he married Harriet (Warye) Seeley in West Liberty and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Michael Seeley of Columbus and David (Glenna) Seeley of Bellefontaine and a daughter, Vanessa (Tim) Million of Hollywood, FL, one brother, Lloyd (Eileen) Seeley of Lakeview and a sister Lois Miller of Urbana, 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was a farmer and welder and had worked for Carter Steel, Rockwell, and retiring from T.R.C. as a Mechanical Technician. He was a member of the First Church of God, Bellefontaine, where he was a church trustee when the church on Brown Street was being built. He also served as Scout Master for the Boy Scout Troop for 9 years, Boys Scout Tecumseh Council 10 years. During this time with the Scouts, he took two groups to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. He was also a member of the Son-Shine Christian Fellowship Church in Lake Placid, Florida, where he and Harriet have been spending their winters. He enjoyed traveling, family, and working in his barn.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, November 23rd at the First Church of God in Bellefontaine with Pastor C. J. Plogger and Pastor Ron Irick officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 to 5pm at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine. Burial will in Highland Memorial Cemetery, West Liberty. Catherine "Kaye" Faye Buchenroth

Catherine "Kaye" Faye Buchenroth, 67, of DeGraff, died on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at Mary Rutan Hospital.

A daughter of the late George William and Faye Irene Nibert Garvey she was born June 8, 1942, in Urbana. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberley Kay Buchenroth.

On September 3, 1960, she married Earl George Buchenroth in Lewistown and he survives. Along with sons, Rusty (Lori) Buchenroth of DeGraff and Ronald (Malinda) Buchenroth of Bellefontaine; daughters, Kathy Carroll of Urbana and Michaella Faulkenberry of DeGraff; a sister, Connie (Floyd) Goings of DeGraff; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker, member of Mt. Tabor Church of God, and a 1960 graduate of DeGraff High School.

Calling hours will be at the Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home in DeGraff from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, November 22, 2009.

Luther Junior Hurley

Luther Junior Hurley, 86, of Quincy, died at 1:30 AM Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at Heartland of Bellefontaine.

He was born Thursday, April 5, 1923, in Logan County, OH, a son of the late Luther Leonidas and Rosa Metcalf Hurley.

On July 15, 1967, he married Hazel Edna Edwards in De Graff and she died September 23, 1992. He was also preceded in death by two sisters; Betty Hurley and Esther Brunson, and one brother; Owen "Max" Hurley.

Survivors include; four sons; Thomas E. (Kay) Hurley of Carol Stream, IL, Larry (Rita) Edwards of West Liberty, Keith A. (Robin) Edwards of Saegertown, PA, and Dan (Cindy) Edwards of Dayton, two daughters; Arlene (Terry) Titus of Bellefontaine, and Leneda (Jim) Enright of Westminster, MD, two brothers;  Ralph (Audrey) Hurley, and Charles R. (Peggy) Hurley both of  Bellefontaine, two sisters; Ruth (Fred) Idle of Marysville, and Janet (Don) Henman of New Carlisle, fourteen grand children, thirteen great grand children, and two great great grand children.

A farmer most of his life he worked for Tanger Farms and he also worked at Westinghouse in Bellefontaine. He was a member of Grace Chapel Church in West Liberty and Gretna Brethren Church.  He enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He was always active at his church where he helped with many construction projects.

Donna Pyhtila 11-17-09 Donna M. Neer Van Horn Pyhtila, 90, of Lima, formerly of Jackson Center, passed away at 7:50 p.m. Monday, November 16, 2009, at Green Hills Retirement Center, West Liberty.

She was born in Van Wert, Ohio on February 16, 1919, a daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Pool Neer. She also was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles R. Van Horn on Nov. 14, 1972, Elbie Miller in March 1983 and Melvin “Mel” Pyhtila on Aug. 25, 2009, a son, John D. Van Horn on Sept. 23, 2006 and a brother, Herbert.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice (Mel) Shields of Bellefontaine; brothers, Andy (Polly) Neer of Shelby, Richard (Barbara) Neer and Gaylord (Betty) Neer both of Sidney, Robert Neer of Tipp City, Jacque (Marilyn) Neer and David (Jan) Neer both of Texas; sisters, Rose Webb of Sidney, Christine Greer and Ruth Spyker both of Urbana; grandchildren, Mark (Sara) Shields, Sherri (Perry) Hodies, III, Diane (Dave) Shields and David (Misty) Shields; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a homemaker and retired from St. Rita’s Medical Center as a Patient Transport in 1985.

She was a member of the Maplewood United Methodist Church, Maplewood, Ohio and lastly she became a member of the Church of Christ, Lima, Ohio where her and her husband attended until she was unable. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and families. In her earlier days she enjoyed square dancing, singing, and golf and made a hole-in-one at the age of 75. For several years she and her husband had a winter home in Sebring, Florida.

Pastor Jim Maxwell officiates a funeral at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20th in the Sanford Funeral Home, Jackson Center, where visitation is an hour prior to the funeral. Burial is in Cedar Point Cemetery, Pasco.

John P. Fulkerson

John Fulkerson 11-16-09 John P. Fulkerson, 85, of Huntsville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 16, 2009 at Mary Rutan Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born on September 22, 1924, at the family farm in Huntsville, to the late Phillip H. and Mary Jane “Jenny” (Harrod) Fulkerson.

On June 12, 1947, he married the former Betty Dipple in Belle Center and she survives along with their three sons, Rick L. Fulkerson of Hutchison, MN, Chris (Kathy) Fulkerson of Huntsville and Joel (Lula) Fulkerson of Bellefontaine; two grandchildren, Andy (Amanda) Fulkerson of Huntsville and Nicole (Dave Conkel) Fulkerson of Bellefontaine; three great grandchildren, Ethan, Trenton and Kora Jean Fulkerson; and two brothers, Andrew Fulkerson of Belle Center and Charles (Alberta) Fulkerson of Rushsylvania.

He is preceded in death by a sisters and brothers-in-law, Sara Belle and Byron Youtsey and Mary and Willard Roby, and sister-in-law, Ruth Fulkerson.

John owned and operated Fulkerson Trucking and Excavating in Huntsville for 59 years.

He graduated from Huntsville High School in 1942 where he was the Logan County Table Tennis Champion multiple times in both junior high and high school.  He was a member of the Huntsville Presbyterian Church, where he formerly served as trustee, a member of the Huntsville Lions Club and belonged to the Mended Hearts of Bellefontaine.  He served two terms as President for the Indian Lake Athletic Boosters.

Pastor Karen Cassedy and Rev. Russell Williams will conduct a funeral service at 1:30 pm on Thursday, November 19th at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where friends may call on Wednesday, November 18th from 3 to 7.  Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in West Liberty.  Pallbearers include Rick, Chris, Joel and Andy Fulkerson, Tim O’Rielley and Dick Stayrook.  Ethan and Trenton Fulkerson will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Avril May Knief, 92, of De Graff, died at 2:10 AM Monday, November 16, 2009, at Heartland of Indian Lake Rehab. Center, Lakeview.

A homemaker, she was born April 28, 1917, in Bloomfield Twp., a daughter of the late Edward and Iona Pearl Piper Knief. She was also preceded in death by four Brothers; Paul R., Russell, Eugene, and Oliver Knief.

Survivors include two Nieces; Betty Wren of Bellefontaine, and Dixie (Dwaine) Golliday of Lewistown, and four Nephews; Farrell (Roberta) Knief, and James (Connie) Knief both of Lewistown, Jerry (Karen) Knief and Dale (Velda) Knief both of De Graff.

Keith Allen Barker, 65, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at his residence.

He was born on July 11, 1944 in Celina, OH to the late Frank and Grace (Bennett) Barker.

On June 15, 2007 he married Harriet Tully in Bellefontaine and she survives. Also surviving is a son, Brent (Dana) Barker of Carson City, MI and Derek (Jacqui) Norman and children, Kara & Emma, of Big Pine Keys, FL, who has been like a son for many years; brother, Bill (Elda) Barker of San Diego, CA; sisters, Rosemary (Chuck) Barton, Nancy (Bob) Henry, both of Bellefontaine and Alice (Doug) Baughman of DeGraff; a grandchildren, Eden Lance, Roslyn Melody and Bryna Skylar.

Keith was a teacher and taught school in Key West, FL for 28 years and in Columbus, GA for two years.

He was a member of the First Church of God in Bellefontaine and a graduate of Bellefontaine High School in 1962.  In 1971 he graduated from Anderson College, Anderson, IN where he played football all four years.  He enjoyed boating, fishing and anything to do with the water.

There will be a memorial service at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the First Church of God in Bellefontaine with Pastor Ray Headings and Pastor C.J.   Plogger officiating.  There will be one hour of calling prior to the service at the church.

Merlin R. Kerns, 87, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Heartland of Urbana.

He was born on October 28, 1921 in East Liberty, OH to the late Ray and Evalene (Beightler) Kerns.

On February 17, 1945 he married Bettie Jo Wehner in Wapakoneta, OH and she preceded him in death on July 1, 2009.  Also preceding him in death is a sister, Annabel Boblitt.

Surviving are two sons, Greg A. (Carole) Kerns of Ft. Myers, FL and Steven B. Kerns of Bellefontaine; a brother and sister, Leon (Jean) Kerns and Goldie Watkins both of Bellefontaine; five grandchildren, Tim, Katie, Allison, Ric & Amy and four great grandchildren.

A WWII Army Air Corp veteran, Merlin worked for Notestine Flooring Covering in Bellefontaine.  He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Bellefontaine, the Bellefontaine American Legion Post #173, and BPOE #132.  Merlin enjoyed fishing and was an avid supporter of the Ohio State University Athletics.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 am on Friday, November 13, 2009 at the First Lutheran Church in Bellefontaine with Pastor Jonathan Bull officiating.  Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Edith H. “Midge” Meyer, 74, of Marion, OH, passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at The Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus.

She was born on January 18, 1935 in Huntington, WV to the late Irwin and Maggie (Brown) Clay.

On January 7, 1961 she married Al Meyer in Bellefontaine and he survives in Santa Fe, OH.

Also surviving are three sons, Eugene Meyer of Columbus, Joe (Karen) Meyer of Marion and Gale “Scott” (Diane) Meyer of Chapel Hill, NC; a sister, Elsie Kitchen of Hurricane, WV; and five grandchildren, Ashlee, April & Adam Meyer and Nathaniel and Elijah Meyer.

Preceding her in death are her brothers, Milt, Asa, Wade and Elmer and sisters, Normal, Tesee, Mary and Mary Lou.

Midge was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Bellefontaine. She worked as a P.A.U. Assistant at Heartland of Bellefontaine and was a homemaker. She devoted her life to her family.

Visitations will be held at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine on Tuesday, November 10th from 6 to 8 and again on Wednesday, at the funeral home, from 12:30 to 1:15. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Wednesday at the Hillcrest Baptist Church with Rev. William Oda officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Memorial Cemetery in West Liberty.

Anita J. Wilson, 72, of Belle Center, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at Logan Acres Care Center, Bellefontaine, OH.

She was born on July 22, 1937 in Confluence, KY to the late Altro and Fae (Huff) Bowling.

On July 22, 1954 she married Vestel L. Wilson in Hazard, KY and he preceded her in death on January 19, 2008. Also preceding her in death is a daughter, Brenda Livermore and a brother, Larry E. Bowling.

Surviving are her children, David (Pamela) Wilson and Linda Baker both of Belle Center; three brothers, Wayne (Lois) Bowling of Peoria, IL, Estil E. Bowling of Sacramento, CA and Lowell O. (Gail) Bowling of Somerset, KY; eight grandchildren, Melissa (Dan) Craig; Josh Livermore, Alicia and Jessica Baker, Frederick (Kendra) Justice; David Grooms, Kelly Wilson and Jimmy Holland; and four great grandchildren, Gavin, Kaleb, Anthony and Kyle.

A homemaker, Anita was a member of the New Richland Baptist Church. She enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband, spending time with her grandchildren and loved her Jack Russell Terrier, Zoey.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 12th at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Belle Center with Pastors Ron Sanderson and Wayne Bowling, her brother, officiating. Pat Shank 11-8-09 Noel P. “Pat” Shank, 61, of  Jackson Center, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, November 8, 2009, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima, Ohio.

He was born in Sidney, Ohio on March 21, 1948, a son of the late Wilbert and Linda Mumford Shank.

On July 13, 1968, he married Janice I. Gies in Jackson Center and she survives along with daughters, Deborah (Nathan) Ruck, Wapakaoneta, Ann (Kevin) Carter of Cincinnati and Elizabeth (Patrick) Clark of Hilliard; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Pete Shank of Florida, Bill Shank of Sidney and Jerry (Nancy) Shank of Lakeview; sisters, Thelma Penny, Covington and Leah (Albert) Hughes of Jackson Center and several nieces and nephews.

He retired from Airstream Inc. in Jackson Center in February 2009 after 42 years as a carpet installer.

A member of the Christ The King Church, Jackson Center he enjoyed fishing, playing softball, hunting and loved being with his children and grandchildren.

Donna Mae Strayer, 79, of De Graff, died at 10:57 AM Saturday, November 7, 2009, at her home.

She was born January 30, 1930, in Murray City, OH, a daughter of the late Rev. Daniel Howard and Thelma Irene Kitchen Householder. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Strayer and a brother, Howard Junior Householder. She was a 1947 graduate of Deer Park High School near Cincinnati.

On April 8, 1951, she married Harley Lee Strayer in De Graff and he survives.

Also surviving are a son, Stephen (Rita) Strayer of Bellefontaine; daughters, Janet (Kevin) Smith, and Debbie (Jim) Carey both of De Graff; sister, Wilma Ruth Gibbons of De Graff, eight grandchildren, Matthew (Kaitlin) Strayer of Ashland, Michael Strayer of Bellefontaine, Emilee, Christopher and Nicholas Smith, Alexander, Hailey, and Benjamin Carey all of De Graff; step grandchildren, Mindy (Carlos) Cioffi of Bellefontaine and Jeff (Brandie) Wren of De Graff; six step great-grand children and two step great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A homemaker she was an active member of the DeGraff United Methodist Church, a member of Miami Grange # 2128, De Graff, and a former member of the Order of Eastern Star. She also worked at the Citizens Bank of De Graff as a teller for several years.

The family will receive friends at the Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home, De Graff on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Boyd Bradford Jr. 11-5-09 Boyd E. Bradford Jr., 75, of Rushsylvania, passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

He was born on November 22, 1933 in DeGraff, OH to the late Boyd Edwin Sr. and Louie Marie (Chandler) Bradford.

On September 6, 1956 he married Janice Buffenbarger in Rushsylvania and she survives along with their daughters, Stephanie F. and Holly Bradford, both of Rushsylvania; special foster daughter, Betty Jo (Tom) Reffett and children, Jesse and Jackie; brothers, Darrel (Kathy) Bradford of Rushsylvania; sisters, Mary Clark of California, Martha (Arthur) Metz of Zanesfield, Eilene (Jim) Everhardt of Elida and Patty Everhardt of Georgia; and a granddaughter, Hilery Marie Reese, who is due to have the first great grandchild, Aiden Michael Edwin, in January; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Boyd was employed at Super Foods Warehouse, then worked his way up to Supervisor and retired after 40 years of service.

An Army veteran, he was a member of the Ridgeway Church of Christ and graduate in 1953 from Rushsylvania High School.  An avid Ohio State fan, he loved all sports and enjoyed reading and playing golf.

Boyd was a good husband, father and grandfather who loved his family very much.  He was a great source of strength to the family and all he knew.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, November 8th from 2 to 5 at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Rushsylvania.  The service will be at 1:00 pm on Monday, November 9th at the Ridgeway Church of Christ with Pastor Corey Savage officiating.  Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Belle Center.

Robert W. Schmitz, Sr., 86, of Lakeview, formerly of Dayton, Ohio, passed away at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at his home.

He was born in Vera Cruz, Ohio on May 12, 1923, a son of the late Bartholomew and Clara Parker Schmitz.  He also was preceded in death by 4 brothers, 2 sisters, and 2 grandchildren.

On July 31, 1948, he married Bertha E. Moore in Vera Cruz, Ohio and she survives along with four daughters, Cheryl Penney, Dayton, Sandy Collins, Centerville, Georgia, Debbie (Jim) Hilgeford, Beavercreek, Cindy (Randy) Boschert, St. Peters, Missouri; two sons, Robert (Debbie) Schmitz, Amelia, Ohio, Gary (Renee) Schmitz, Troy, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Paul Kennedy who was like a son to him.

He retired from NCR, Dayton, Ohio after 30 years and was a custodian at the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Dayton.

He was an Army Air Force WWII Veteran and a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, Russells Point and the Knights of Columbus Council #4378, Russells Point, Indian Lake Eagles #3615 and the American Legion Post #675, Dayton, Ohio for over 50 years.

Father Jim Russell will conduct a funeral mass at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Russells Point where friends may call one hour prior to the service.  Visitation will be held at the Myron Van Horn Chapel of Sanford-Eichholtz Funeral Home, Lakeview, from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.  Burial is in Calvary Cemetery, Dayton.

Shelby J. Cauley, 69, of Russells Point, passed away at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 2009, at her home.

She was born in Manchester, Ohio on March 31, 1940, a daughter of the late Eddie and Mami Grimes Davis.  She also was preceded in death by a step-son, Scottie Cauley; three sisters, Dorothy Carter, Thelma Woodroff and Mildred Cox and two brothers, Harold and Ernest Davis.

On September 20, 1980, she married Richard Cauley and he survives along with a daughter, Tammy (Mike) Rogers of West Union; step-daughter, Anita (Boyd) Law of New Carlisle; grandchildren, Brett Lee Rogers, Logan Law and Melinda Andrews; great-grandchildren, Reese Rogers & Ariel Burkardt; sisters, Irene Moore of West Union and Edna Williams of Florida; brothers, Ralph, Virgil and Joe Davis all of Cherry Fork, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

She worked as a cook and waitress and was an avid Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fan and loved cats.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Huntsville Cemetery.

Betty Jane (Piatt) Freese, 88, of Centerville, Ohio passed away at 7:40 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2009 at Liberty Retirement Community in Centerville. She was born in Champaign County on November 4, 1920 to the late Jacob I. and Mina Pearl Shanley Piatt. On March 1, 1946, she married James E. Freese whom preceded her in death.

Mrs. Freese graduated from Monroe Township High School and the Toledo State Hospital with a Licensed Practical Nursing Degree. She retired from Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Ohio where she worked as a LPN for 20 years. She attended the Kingscreek Baptist Church in Kingscreek, Ohio, volunteered at Community Hospital in Springfield and made blankets and clothes for Elderly United in Springfield.

Survivors include two sons, John E. (Marty) Piatt of Centerville and Gale L. (Jeane) Freese of Huber Heights; Grandchildren, J. David Piatt of Kent, Washington, Diane J. Piatt of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Daniel J. (Kristen) Piatt of Bellevue, Washington; a great granddaughter, Faith Audrey Piatt; two special nieces, Eleanor Jane McGuire of Urbana and Sharynn Patterson of North Vernon, Indiana; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Piatt of Mason, Ohio and Betty Phyllis Piatt of North Vernon, Ohio. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert James Freese; a sister, Mildred Reid; and three brothers, Jacob Piatt, II, Robert Piatt and Ben Piatt.

Dorothy JoAnn Nichols 11-1-09 Dorothy JoAnn Nichols, 73, of Bellefontaine, passed from this world peacefully, surrounded by family, at 1:07 p.m. on October 31, 2009. JoAnn was born in Akron, Ohio on August 9, 1936 to the late Walter Freeman and Rosalie Elenore Sanders.

She graduated from St. Vincent’s Parochial School in Akron, Ohio in 1954. On May 21, 1955, at St. Martha’s Catholic Church, she married her husband of 54 years Kenneth Nichols, Jr., who survives.

Retired from Siemens, Mrs. Nichols was and a lifetime member of the Catholic Church and a longtime member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. She enjoyed cooking, shopping and doting on her two grandsons.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth; daughter Michele Louise Nichols of Zanesfield; son, Christopher Freeman Nichols of Bellefontaine, daughter, Therese Ann (Scott Richard) Donnelly of Bellefontaine; grandsons, Josef Andrew (Cavelyn) Donnelly of Federated States of Micronesia and Christopher Scott Donnelly of Bellefontaine; brothers, Norman (Marlene) Russell, Marvin Nichols and Walter (Thelma) Roby. She is also survived by countless nephews and nieces. JoAnn was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Father Harold Kist will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at the St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Russells Point. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 3rd from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine, Ohio. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Bellefontaine, Ohio. Jennie Marie Bell 11-1-09 Jennie Marie Bell, 91, of West Liberty, passed away Friday, October 30, 2009 at Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine.  Jennie Marie was born March 30, 1918, the daughter of the late Starley and Clara Irene (Sams) Allen.

She is also preceded in death by both her first husband, Emerson Sherer and her second husband, Russell Bell, a brother, and two sisters.

She is survived by two daughters, Suzanne (Robert) Coffman of Huntsville and Barbara Watt of Parker, CO, a sister, Clara Nofziger of Gypsum, CO and four grandchildren, Christine Ott, Laurie Harris, Dan Hughes, and Carrie Fichter, seven great grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews.

She worked as a homemaker and was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Bellefontaine where she had sang in the choir and had also worked as the secretary in the 1960’s.  She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Art Club of Bellefontaine.  She enjoyed playing Bridge and playing music too, as she played the piano and organ and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, November 4th in the First United Presbyterian Church of Bellefontaine with Rev. Rob Fulton officiating.  Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery, West Liberty.  Visitation will be from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8pm Tuesday, November 3rd at the Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine.  Memorial contributions may be made to First United Presbyterian Church Music Fund, 117 North Main Street, Bellefontaine, Ohio 43311.
