Tigers, Raiders split varsity bowling match

West Liberty-Salem defeated Benjamin Logan 2084 to 2027 Friday night in boys varsity bowling action.

High scores for the Tigers go to Brock Bahan with a 235, 439 series, and Steven Klingler with a 234, 416 series.

Brad Keeran bowled a 225 and Evan Nolan rolled a 160, 280 series to lead Benjamin Logan.

Benjamin Logan got its revenge in the girls match, though, defeating West Liberty-Salem by a final tally of 1945-2434.

Brittney Poling led the Raiders with a 233, 388 series. Trinnity Jackson contributed nicely, bowling  a 202, 397 series. 

Brittney Lewis led the Tigers with a 186 and a 185, 371 series and Morgan Miller added a 150, 239 series.

Chiefs win league opener; Lakers over Greenon; tough night for Benjamin Logan (Audio included)

As heard Friday night on WBLL Bellefontaine’s boys varsity basketball team defeated visiting Kenton Ridge in the CBC opener by a final score of 60-48. Zach Showalter paced the Chieftains with 15 points off the bench. The senior was named the State Farm Insurance Player of the Game.

The Chiefs outscored the Cougars 31-16 in the second and third quarters to take control.

Que Carter added 11 points before fouling out.

Freshman guard Matt Gump scored six points, going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Standout guard Kyle Morris paced KR with 11.

Bellefontaine outrebounded Kenton Ridge 31-13.

Bellefontaine’s record improves to 2-1 on the season, 1-0 in conference; Kenton Ridge drops to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.

The Chiefs will visit Greenon on Tuesday and the Cougars head to Northwestern on Tuesday.

Indian Lake defeated Greenon Friday night in boys varsity basketball action by a final tally of 56-40.

The game was tied 36-36 after three quarters, but the Lakers outscored the visitors 20-4 in the final eight minutes.

Russ Hogue scored a game-high 22 and fellow junior Adam Reichert added 12.

Greenon bested the Lakers in the JV game, however, 59-48.

Ryan Kenner paced Indian Lake with 14 and Ben Frey added 9.

Benjamin Logan’s entire basketball program had a tough night against Graham. The Raiders varsity team fell to the Falcons by a final score of 73-49. Eric Olson led the Raiders with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Zak Wirick tallied 12 points, and Matt McKirihan added 11 points for Benjamin Logan.

It was any easier for Benjamin Logan’s JV squad, either. The Raiders dropped that game by a score of 47-37. Blaine Ricketts was the leading score for Benjamin Logan with nine points; the freshman team was defeated by Graham as well, 43-21. Landon Johnson scored 11 for the black and gold.

West Liberty-Salem beat host Triad 54-43.

Andy Daulton scored 17 and senior Collin Link recorded 11 points and 12 rebounds.

WLS is 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the OHC.

The JV Tigers edged the Cardinals 50-49.

Travis Mayse had 11 points and Landon Hormann added 10 points.

Josh Lowe grabbed 11 rebounds.

The freshman Tigers won 32-19 behind Riley Sims’ 10 points.

Springfield Shawnee beat Dayton Stebbins 53-45.

Tipp City stifled Tecumseh 44-33.

Urbana blasted Northwestern 85-53 to improve to 4-0.

Greeneview handled Northeastern 72-45.

Southeastern outscored Cedarville 63-46.

Troy knocked off Sidney 78-69. The Yellow Jackets fall to 3-1.

Vandalia-Butler downed Piqua 57-44.

North Union beat River Valley 58-39.

Anna ran past host Jackson Center 63-37. The Rockets have won 30 consecutive league games, which is a record.

Russia breezed past Fairlawn 76-38.

Riverside powerlifters to host world qualifier Saturday

Riverside’s powerlifting team will host the American Drug Free Powerlifting Federation meet at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the high school in an event with global implications.

The meet is open and will feature individual competitors as young as 14 and as old as 80—some trying to qualify for a world team spot for a competition in Ireland.

The bench press and dead lift will be the primary competitions, though lifters will be competing in a handful of other events, too.

Admission to the event is $3 and children 12-and-under get in free.

This marks the first time Riverside has hosted a meet. These world qualifying meets rotate around the globe. RHS powerlifting coach Scott Stewart is thrilled his school was able to attract one of the meets.

“We are very excited to have this meet,” said Stewart. “This is something we’ve always wanted to do. We are trying to build a base with younger kids and emphasize the drug-free theme. That is one of the things we really wanted to keep lifters involved in. I am very pro ADFPF and I take a lot of pride that our kids are clean and not using things such as steroids.”

Saturday’s meet includes lifters from Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Indiana.

Lady Cardinals rally past WLS; Pirates edge Waynesfield-Goshen

Several local basketball teams were in action last night.

In varsity girls, Triad rallied past host West Liberty-Salem 59-57 in overtime.

The Cardinals forced overtime by rallying from seven down in the final minute.

Hannah Smith scored 18, Kelsey Funderburgh recorded 15, and Addie Dixon added 14.

For West Liberty-Salem, sophomore Becka Peterson exploded for 34 points and 19 rebounds.

Triad improves to 2-2, 1-0. They will host Cedarville tomorrow.

WLS falls to 1-4, 0-1. The Tigers will host Greeneview tomorrow.

The JV Tigers defeated the Cardinals 35-25.

Maria Daulton and Kelsey Helms each scored 12 points.

The Riverside varsity girls team edged visiting Waynesfield-Goshen 55-51.

Amelia Carter had 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Teammate Erica Snapp poured in 18 points.

The Pirates outscored the Tigers 13-3 in the second quarter.

Jr. High:

The Indian Lake 7th grade girls team lost at Northridge 34-25.

Sydney Miller had 15 points and Gabi Maier added 6 points.

Taylor Dixon and Jordan Risner each had 8 rebounds.

The Bellefontaine 7th grade girls team fell to Springfield Shawnee 50-17.

McKenzie Brunswick had 8 points and Brenda Johnson added 5 points.

The Lady Chiefs 8th grade team defeated Springfield Shawnee 34-27.

Holly Parker dropped in 14 points, Jazmyn Haley had 8 points, and Kameren Haley added 7 points.

The Indian Lake 8th grade boys team handled Northridge 43-21.

Brennan Lump led all scorers with 14 points.

Montel Morgan recorded 11 points and Daniel Fry and Christian Grider each added 5 points.

The Lakers are 3-0. They will host Bellefontaine tomorrow.

The West Liberty-Salem 8th grade boys lost to rival Mechanicsburg 32-25.

David Branham had 11 and Todd Pease added 10 points.

The 7th grade Tigers handled the Indians 50-7 to improve to 2-0.

Ben Burden had 11 points, Conner Woods and Trent Thomas each had 8 points, and Michael McIntosh added 6.

The Bellefontaine 8th grade boys team outscored Shawnee 40-25.

Cam Henry and Jarrod Houchin led the way with 13 points apiece.

The Bellefontaine 7th grade boys team lost to Shawnee 49-48.

Dorion Hughes had 9 points and Daniel Boy added 8.

Lady Lakers strike for close win

The Indian Lake varsity and JV girls bowling teams battled Springfield Shawnee at T.P. Lanes last night.

The Lakers won the varsity match 2061 to 2051.

Kristie Major had a 317 series, Alyssa Huffman tossed a 309 series, Ashley Brown recorded a 272 series, and Valarie Mahoney added a 256 series.

The Braves won the JV match 1471 to 1301.

Megan Embry paced Indian Lake with a 311. Audriana Jordan followed with a 196 series and Jamie Humphrey fired a 161 series.

Oyer, Blackburn lead Lakers past Shawnee; Jr. High basketball finals

A few area basketball teams were in action last night.

In varsity girls, Indian Lake handled host Springfield Shawnee 60-31.

Senior Sadie Oyer scored 18 points, Cori Blackburn dropped in 17, and Mikaela Oyer added 11.

Indian Lake improves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

The JV Lakers defeated the Braves 44-29.

Aushele Sarver scored a team-high 11 points.

Indian Lake welcomes Northwestern Saturday at 6 p.m. It’s the Lakers home opener.

Jr. High:

The Benjamin Logan 8th grade girls team defeated host Fairlawn 28-10.

The Raiders started the game with a 19-0 run.

Emmalee Rumney had 9 points and 8 steals and Alex Thompson recorded 8 points, 6 steals, and 6 rebounds.

Benjamin Logan is 1-1.

The 7th grade Lady Raiders edged Fairlawn 23-20.

Jessica Current had 9 points and Tayler Rose and Kessie Rose each added 6.

The Raiders are 1-1.

Benjamin Logan will host Fairbanks Saturday morning.

The Benjamin Logan 8th grade boys team fell to visiting Fairlawn 38-27.

Austin Ahle paced the Raiders with 7 points.

The Benjamin Logan 7th grade team opened its season by defeating Fairlawn 24-17.

Tanner Rader scored a team-high 6 points.

The Raiders will battle Fairbanks Saturday morning.

Benjamin Logan wrestlers earn win in Logan County Tri-Meet; Grant’s 150th as head coach (Audio and pictures included)

LC Tri-Meet Benjamin Logan, Bellefontaine, and Indian Lake wrestlers met in the Logan County Tri-Meet at Indian Lake High School Wednesday night. Bellefontaine lost to both the Raiders, 51-23, and the Lakers, 40-39.

Benjamin Logan prevailed over the Lakers in the end, 47-29. The win was also Raiders Head Coach Tony Grant’s 150th win in the program.

As an Indian Lake graduate, Grant thought a lot of the win being at his alma mater. “When you think of 150 wins, 20 years as a head coach, I’ve still got a passion for the sport.”

Indian Lake Head Coach Scott Tressler said that Indian Lake’s ultimate goal is to get to the post season, and enjoys starting the year off with the county meet.

Bellefontaine Head Coach Rick Reed plans on having his team work even harder for the rest of this week to prepare for their meet this Saturday against Arcadia.

Hilliker Swimmers shine at Springfield Invitational

The Buckeye Hilliker Swimmers had several strong finishes in the Springfield Invitational.

In the eight and under age group, Macy Arn placed first in five events. Arn currently has qualifying time cuts for the 2010 championship season in seven events. Shelby Starkey, also competing in the eight and under age group, had several top finishes. She has qualifying championship times in seven events.

Emily Fulmer posted top-10 finishes in five events in the 9-10 age group and has championship qualifying times in four events. Emma Smith, competing in the 11-12 age bracket, placed in the top-10 in two events and has qualifying times in two events.

Other swimmers with top-10 finishes: Amy Fulmer, Shelby Moore, Connor Hall, Jordan Hall, Peyton Kinney, and Skyler Tavenner.

Jackson Center knocks off Riverside, Raiders fall at Fairbanks

A few local boys basketball teams were in action Tuesday night.

As featured on 98.3 WPKO, Jackson Center defeated host Riverside 56-38.

Sophomore Andy Hoying led the Tigers with 14. Jacob Mann recorded 13, Kyle Woodward dropped in 11, and Aaron Klopfenstein added 10.

For the Pirates, senior Kyle Baughman had 10 points, 7 rebounds, and four blocks.

Poor outside shooting was the undoing for Riverside, connecting on just 2-18 three-point shots.

JC is 2-0 and Riverside falls to 0-2.

The JV Tigers won 61-25.

Benjamin Logan lost at Fairbanks 58-46.

Matt McKirahan and Zak Wirick each had 11 points.

The Raiders drop to 0-2.

In the JV contest, Benjamin Logan won 34-31.

Dylan McGarry and Nick Melvin had 10 points apiece.

The freshman Raiders lost 26-14.

Landon Johnson dropped in 11 points.

Graham defeated host West Liberty-Salem 59-42.

For the Tigers, Jarred Merrick had 10 points and Andy Daulton added 8.

Collin Link collected seven rebounds.

WLS is 0-2 and Graham is 1-0.

The JV Tigers beat the Falcons 39-28.

Landon Hormann led the way with 14 points.

WLS will visit rival Triad on Friday.

Urbana handled Kenton 63-44.

The Hillclimbers took control with a 19-0 run in the first half.

Anthony Marino and Zach Stillings each scored 16.

For the Wildcats, Maty Mauk tossed in 16.

Urbana improves to 3-0. They will travel to Northwestern on Friday.

Kenton (0-2) will visit Upper Scioto Valley on Saturday.

WPKO and WBLL will air high school basketball all season long. Kenton Ridge travels to Bellefontaine Friday night on WBLL. WPKO will feature Mechanicsburg at West Liberty-Salem next Tuesday.

The Bellefontaine Chieftain bowlers took on Kenton Ridge Tuesday night, winning just one of the matches against the Cougars.

The varsity boys lost, 2811 to 2388. Top scorers were:

Mark Slamons 223 game and 379 series
Ethan Lucas 199 game and 367 series
Andy Newman 183 game and 355 series

The JV also took a loss, 1928 to 1794. Chieftain high scorers were:

Mason Yocum 184, 178 games and 362 series

The varsity girls took the only win for the Chiefs, 2082 to 1937. Lady Chiefs top scorers were:

Both girls teams faired well, with the varsity winning 2224 to 1950 and JV defeating the Red Devils 1866 to 1675.

The West Liberty-Salem Middle School wrestling team defeated Lima Central Catholic and South Vienna in a tri-match last night.

Against LCC, Garret Conklin (98), Conrad Hamren (104), and Eli Woodruff (142) earned pins.

Tyler Garcia (150) won by decision.

Against South Vienna, Conklin and Woodruff collected pins.

BHS varsity bowlers split at Greenon

The Bellefontaine bowling team traveled to Greenon Monday afternoon.

In varsity girls, BHS defeated the Lady Knights 2065 to 1956.

Jessi Moore had a 176 and a 235 for a 411 series.

Lindsay Newlove recorded a 151 and Amber Devine added a 150.

The JV Lady Chiefs lost 1719 to 1500.

Jascey Vermillion had a 132 and a 131 for a 263 series.

Morgan Henry added a 126.

In varsity boys, Greenon beat Bellefontaine 2604 to 2394.

Several local basketball teams hit the court Monday night.

The Riverside varsity girls team defeated host Triad 51-45.

Senior Amelia Carter led the Pirates with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Brooklynn Purtee tossed in 12 points and Erica Snapp had 10 points and 7 steals.

Riverside improves to 1-2.

Jr. High Finals:

The Bellefontaine 7th grade girls team lost to Tipp City 44-27. Brenda Johnson led the Chiefs with 17 points and Kenzie Brunswick added 3. Bellefontaine will visit Springfield Shawnee on Thursday.

The Indian Lake 8th grade girls team defeated Mad River 37-26. Ericka Embry and Haley Boberg were the leading scorers. The Lakers improve to 3-0.

The Indian Lake 7th grade girls team lost to Mad River 25-13. Sydney Miller scored a team-high 6 points.

The West Liberty-Salem 7th grade girls fell to Triad 28-23. Lauren Godwin had eight points and five rebounds and Ashley Holleron had 11 rebounds to lead the Tigers. The Tigers are now 2-1 on the season.

The 8th grade Lady Tigers defeated Triad 45-14. April Kelley had 12 points and Abby Siegenthaler added nine points and eight rebounds. The Lady Tigers are 1-2 on the season. The Tigers travel to Mechanicsburg on Thursday night.

West Liberty-Salem’s 7th grade boys team opened its season with a win over Triad 39-12. Leading the Tigers were Benjamin Burden with nine points, Michael McIntosh with eight points, Trent Thomas added seven, and Cole Wilson tallied five points.

The West Liberty-Salem 8th grade boys fell to Triad 36-35. David Branham led the team with 12 points, Kyle Crawford netted 11, and Todd Pease added eight points. The Tigers play Thursday night at home against Mechanicsburg.

Blue Knights basketball teams continue to shine (Pictures included)

Ashley Falknor from UU 12-09 The Urbana University men’s and women’s basketball teams earned wins at home Saturday.

The Lady Blue Knights won their third straight contest, racing past the Clarion University Golden Eagles. Urbana owned a slight one-point edge at the half, but as they have all season long, the Blue Knights used a strong second half to pick up a 66-51 win.

After a slow start, the Blue Knights have won three straight, improving to 3-5 on the year. They outscored the Golden Eagles by 14 points in the second half thanks to 13-for-26 shooting. Urbana also got it done at the charity stripe in the second half. After missing all 5 of their attempts in the first half, Urbana sank 16-of-18 in the final 20 minutes to put away the Golden Eagles.

Four Blue Knights finished in double-figures and 6 players scored at least 8 points. Haley Ducey and Ashley Falknor (pictured) led the way with 12 points apiece. Falknor also added a game-high 15 rebounds and a team-high 5 assists. It was her second straight double-double. The team’s leading scorer, Unique Lane, chipped in 11 points, and Andrea Vogel had 10 points and 8 rebounds.

The Blue Knights are off until this weekend when they travel to Salem International University to participate in the Joe Manchin Classic on Saturday and Sunday. Their first game is at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday against their tournament hosts from Salem.

For the second time in 2 weeks, the Urbana University men’s team knocked off perennial Division II powerhouse Gannon University. Two Saturdays ago, the Blue Knights secured their first signature win in a 73-43 rout at Gannon’s Hammermill Center. Saturday afternoon, Urbana was equally impressive in an 85-59 victory.

Robert Wilson UU 11-24-09 Urbana put on a shooting clinic, hitting 14-of-20 from downtown for a sizzling 70%. The team hit 7-of-8 threes in the second half to keep the Golden Knights at bay. Freshman Robert Wilson (pictured) led the charge, knocking down all 5 of his attempts from downtown. Wilson shot 8-for-11 and had a game-high 22 points to go with his team-high 8 rebounds.  Sophomore Clint Nicholson hit 4-of-7 from deep to finish with 14 points and 7 boards, and junior Charlton Conner shot 3-for-4 from behind the arc to finish with 13 points.

The win is the third straight for Urbana, and the team improves to 7-2, matching the best start since 1994. The Blue Knights have already surpassed their win total from last season. Gannon slips to 1-3 after the season sweep.

Urbana is off until this weekend when the team travels to Indiana University of Pennsylvania for the Vulcan Invitational.  The Blue Knights will take on Lock Haven University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Three WLS wrestlers post wins at Indian Lake Middle School Invitational

The West Liberty-Salem Jr. High wrestling team lost to Lima Bath, Indian Valley, Urbana, Indian Lake, and Bellefontaine at the Indian Lake Middle School Invitational over the weekend.

For the Tigers, Eli Woodruff and Garret Conklin each had two wins.

Conrad Hamren recorded a win.

West Liberty-Salem will host Lima Central Catholic and Northeastern tonight at six o’clock.

The Bellefontaine varsity boys basketball team traveled to Sidney Saturday night on WBLL, rallying from a 14-point deficit in the 3rd quarter, but ultimately losing, 69-62.

The Chieftains were led by Que Carter with 16 points and Nate Dodds with 12 points.

Jordan Sosby led the team with 9 points. Dylan McGarry added 8.

Botkins beat visiting Riverside 49-37.

The Trojans outscored the Pirates 15-5 in the first quarter.

Eric Egbert led the Pirates with 18 points and two blocked shots.

Kyle Baughman added 10 points, 8 rebounds, and two blocks.

Riverside will host Jackson Center Tuesday night on 98.3 WPKO.

The Indian Lake varsity girls lost a close one at Greenon Saturday night 46-45.

The Lakers were led by Sadie Oyer with 15 points, Cori Blackburn with 12, and Katelyn Stannard with 8.

The ladies are now 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in the CBC. They will play at Springfield Shawnee at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

The JV team also lost a close one to the Knights, 45-44, with Claire Maier leading the Lakers with 10 points.

The West Liberty-Salem varsity girls were also in action Saturday, and went to overtime against Lima Bath. The ladies rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but lost in overtime 47-41.

Becka Peterson led the Tigers with 16 points and Kayla Peterson had 7 steals.

The JV girls lost their first game of the season, 34-29. Kelsey Helms led the team with 15 points.

The Tigers host Triad Thursday in the opening OHC contest.

The Indian Lake 8th grade boys basketball team defeated Jackson Center 57-25 Saturday.

The Lakers were led by Montel Morgan with 14 points, Brenna Lump with 12, and Cole Wurster with 9.

Indian Lake will host Mad River on Monday.

The Indian Lake 7th grade girls also played Jackson Center but lost 23-22. Sydney Miller led the team with 20 points.
