Blue Knights suffer close road loss

12/17/2009

Clint Nicholson photo 11-20-09 After a 7-2 start, not much has gone right for the Urbana University men’s basketball team. In the past 5 days, the Blue Knights have suffered an overtime loss, a defeat at the hands of the 5th ranked team in the country, and now, a 72-69 loss at Mercyhurst Wednesday night.

The Blue Knights led 33-31 at the half. Mercyhurst opened the second half on an 8-0 run and held the lead until a Jared Dewberry 3-pointer returned it to the Blue Knights at the 10-minute mark. The teams battled back-and-forth down the stretch. With 10 seconds remaining, Laker Heiden Ratner sank 1-of-2 free throws to give the home team a 3-point advantage. Robert Wilson rebounded the miss, and the Blue Knights managed to get the ball in their best 3-point shooter’s hands with 1 second remaining on the clock. Clint Nicholson (pictured) got the shot off, but the ball didn’t bounce the Blue Knights’ way as the buzzer sounded.

Mercyhurst improves to 7-2 with the win. The Lakers haven’t dropped a game since Urbana overcame a 20-point 2nd half deficit to knock them off exactly 2 weeks ago. They have won 4 straight since that 70-67 loss. Urbana is headed in the opposite direction, losing 3 straight since matching their best start since 1994.

Despite a miss on the final attempt of the night, Nicholson played extremely well. He finished with a team-high 16 points to go with 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals in just 26 minutes. Wilson recorded his 4th double-double of the season, scoring 12 points to go with 10 boards. Junior center Justin Tyson also scored a dozen, and sophomore guard Marcus Pearl added 11 off the bench.

This weekend, the Blue Knights take on two Top 25 teams back-to-back before the holiday break. The team travels to Southern Indiana to take on the 11th ranked Screaming Eagles on Saturday afternoon. The next day, the Blue Knights will trek to Kentucky Wesleyan College to play the 18th ranked Panthers. Earlier this season, the Blue Knights scored back-to-back wins over teams receiving votes in the Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll when they defeated Gannon and Indianapolis by a combined 40 points.

The Bellefontaine varsity wrestling team went 1-1 Wednesday in a tri-meet at Springfield Shawnee.

The Chiefs started the night by defeating Northwestern 42-33. The Chiefs then fell to defending league champ Shawnee 45-33.

Going 2-0 for BHS were 112 pound sophomore John Maurice, 140 pound sophomore Travis Francis, and 171 pound freshman Matt Price.

The Chiefs are back in action December 29th at the Marion Harding Holiday Classic.

The Bellefontaine Middle School wrestling team went 0-2 in a tri-match at Springfield Shawnee yesterday.

Lady Blue Knights win at the buzzer (Picture included)

12/16/2009

Jalyssa Jackson from UU 12-09 Tuesday night at West Virginia Wesleyan College, the Blue Knight women’s basketball team escaped with their 6th straight victory. Urbana used a game-winning three-pointer by senior co-captain Jalyssa Jackson (pictured) at the buzzer to overcome a late 2-point deficit. After starting the season 0-5, the Blue Knights climbed to 6-5 with the 68-67 win over the Bobcats.

Trailing by 2 with just 17 ticks left on the clock, it appeared as if Urbana’s winning streak would come to an end. An Urbana foul stopped the clock and put a Bobcat on the free throw line with a chance to seal the win with a one-and-one.  The first attempt clanged off the rim and gave the Blue Knights a ray of hope. Urbana’s Ashley Falknor rebounded the miss and the Blue Knights quickly pushed the ball up the floor.

Shooting for the win rather than the tie, Haley Ducey’s long range attempt was off target, but Falknor hustled to track down her 2nd rebound in 7 seconds. The ball found its way to Jackson who knocked down the clutch three to give her squad a one-point win at the buzzer. She finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists.

The Blue Knights received strong performances from each of its 5 starters who combined for 62 of the team’s 68 points.  Junior forward Unique Lane nabbed her first double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and pulling down 12 boards.  Lane also added 6 assists and 4 steals in the win. Ducey scored a team-high 16 points. Andrea Vogel added 12 on 5-of-7 shooting, and Falknor had 9 points in addition to 2 of the biggest rebounds of the night.

The Blue Knights return to Ohio to take on the 12th ranked Yellow Jackets at Cedarville University on Thursday night.  Cedarville dealt Urbana its 4th straight loss earlier this season, defeating the Blue Knights 70-57 in Urbana. Tip-off was originally scheduled for 5:30, but has been moved back to 7:00 p.m.

Chiefs cruise past Greenon, Indians shoot past WLS (Audio included)

12/15/2009

Bellefontaine’s boys varsity basketball team claimed its third win of the season Tuesday night with an impressive 54-30 road victory over the Greenon Knights.

Tuesday’s matchup with Greenon was sandwiched between a hard-fought victory over Kenton Ridge last Friday night and an important early-season showdown at Tipp City this Friday and there was some concern, especially early in the game, that perhaps the Chiefs had overlooked the upstart Knights.

After jumping out to an early 10-4 advantage Tuesday night, Bellefontaine weathered a 9-2 Greenon spurt that saw the Knights knot the game at 10 at the end of one quarter and gave the home team a brief advantage in the early stages of the second stanza.

The Chiefs would recover, however, pitching a shutout the remaining six-plus minutes of the first half to take a 22-13 lead into the locker room.

Third quarter action was more of the same and a suffocating Chiefs defense forced a flurry of Greenon turnovers leading to easy baskets at the other end.

Chiefs defenders held Greenon to just 30% shooting from the field for the game.

Que Carter led the charge for Bellefontaine, scoring 19 points including a rim-rocking second quarter dunk on a beautiful outlet pass from Michael Stockton and Nate Dodds added 11 points in the win.

Listen as Chiefs Head Coach Henry Stolly talks about his team’s play Tuesday as well as the individual performance turned in by Carter.

With the victory Bellefontaine moves to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the CBC. The Chiefs are in action again Friday night at Tipp City. That game can be heard on WBLL with coverage beginning at 7:15.

Vito shines at first Olympic qualifier (Audio and picture included)

12/13/2009

Louie Vito 12-09 Bellefontaine native Louie Vito (pictured) proved that dancing may actually help in professional snowboarding.

Vito, fresh off Dancing With the Stars fame, finished second in the United States Olympic halfpipe team trials over the weekend in Copper Mountain, Colorado.

Reigning Gold Medalist Shaun White won the trial, which was carried on NBC.

It’s the first of five events that will determine which four riders will represent our country at the Winter Games in Vancouver in February.

It appears that White and Vito are well on their way to securing a spot on Team USA.

Louie and Shaun are the only riders that can do a double-cork 1080 back-to-back. They landed runs that created new standards for the rest of the world’s riders to chase. Both of them said they held back on some other maneuvers that we may see later this winter.

The next two events will be in early January at California’s Mammoth Mountain. The final two events will be held in Park City, Utah, on back-to-back days two weeks later. Riders will qualify for the team on the basis of their two best finishes.

Vito, 21, is attempting to become just the second Logan Countian to ever make the Olympics.

Lindsay Vito (Louie’s sister) spoke with Bill Tipple about Louie’s run and the significance of finishing second .
