The team won first place in the World Championships which was held in Sun City, South Africa. The induction ceremony was held in conjunction with the National Gymnastics Congress and Championships in Dallas, Texas. Peter Vidmar, former gymnastics Olympian, was Master of Ceremonies for the event.

The inductees were each presented with engraved gold medallions, and plaques commemorating winning the gold medal in the 1999 World competition during a banquet at the Sheraton Dallas. All inductees were introduced at the Men’s Gymnastics Finals competition later that evening in the American Airlines Arena.

Griffith started competing with the Lima Gymnastics Academy at a young age, won several state, regional and national titles, and was a member of the USA National Gymnastics team for six years. He started formal training in West Liberty and also trained in Cincinnati, Kentucky, and Pocatello, Idaho.

He also competed in Durban, South Africa; Sydney, Australia; and in Europe on the World Cup Circuit. Mark was recruited to audition for Cirque du Soleil and joined that company in November, 2001, as a performing artist in power tumbling and trampoline in Orlando’s resident show, La Nouba.

His parents, Don and Jean Griffith of Bellefontaine, and his sister, Andrea Jacobs of  Huntsville, attended the Hall of Fame ceremonies.

Bellefontaine City Council meets for last regular session of 2009

12/22/2009

City Council 12-22-09The Bellefontaine City Council met in regular session Tuesday night at 7:30.

Council had very few ordinances on the table for the year’s last session. The first ordinance, passed on first reading only, extended a one-year contract with Allied Waste Management for garbage pick-up in the city.

One new condition on the contract was a fuel fee, which will not affect the residents, but the city will have on their bill. Allied Waste’s Ray Lewis says the fee is based on the national price of diesel fuel each month.

Another ordinance was the second reading to make temporary appropriations for current expenses and other expenditures for 2010. Some changes needed to be made for the ordinance, including changes to the miscellaneous account and to the sewer account.

Three line items were added to the miscellaneous account due to banking fees that were originally in the interest income. Low interest rates in the past left these items in the interest income, but since the rates have gone up the city will now have to pay those out of the general fund.

Banking fees, Municipal Court banking fees and Municipal Court merchant services are the items added to the miscellaneous account, totaling around $30,500.

The sewer account will be separating off the money for the waste water treatment plant. “We can keep better track of what is spent at the waste water treatment plant, and hopefully keep a closer eye on that so we can increase our efficiencies there,” said Mayor Adam Brannon.

These changes put the ordinance back to its first reading, and it was passed on first reading only.

Listen to Mayor Brannon talk about the changes to the budget appropriations and how some members of council are proposing to help the budget’s shortfalls.

Bellefontaine City Council meets again in a special meeting Wednesday, December 30 at 7 p.m.

Logan County Commissioners adopt temporary annual budget for 2010

12/22/2009

Logan County Commissioners Bayliss, Knight, and Core announced Tuesday that they have adopted a temporary annual budget for 2010. The rough economy affected a lot of the commissioners’ decisions.

The temporary budget will fund all elected officials at the 2009 level, but given the recent reductions in the projected revenues for the year maintaining that level may be problematic.

The commissioners will not ask for additional taxes, and will not be diverting money into the general fund from other county funds that the public has voted for specific use.

Some agencies such as Soil and Water, OSU Extension and The Agricultural Society (Fair Board) will receive a significant reduction in funding.

This temporary budget will amount to $14,226,380.82. This amount will be adjusted in January as required.

The commissioners are looking at various methods to close the potential budget shortfalls such as sale of county property and delay in payment to other agencies.

The board will continue to monitor the situation closely with other elected officials and will advise residents as changes are required.

Deer-gun weekend numbers up locally and statewide

12/22/2009

Hunters killed 19,900 deer on December 19th-20th, during the weekend of gun hunting, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

The extra weekend of gun hunting was first offered in 2006 in response to hunters' request for additional weekend days to pursue white-tailed deer, the state's number one big game animal. In 2008, hunters took 16,382 deer during those two days.

Counties leading the state in deer killed over the weekend included: Tuscarawas – 1,164; Harrison – 725; Licking – 663; Ashtabula – 589; Holmes – 567; Columbiana – 543; Coshocton – 503; Knox – 488; Stark – 487; and Guernsey – 474.

A total of 198,297 deer have been harvested so far this season when combining the adult and youth gun seasons, early muzzleloader season and the first nine weeks of the archery season. Hunters took a total of 252,017 deer during all of last year's hunting seasons.

Hunters can continue to enjoy deer hunting January 9th-12th, 2010, during the statewide muzzleloader season, and through February 7th, 2010 as the archery season continues.

The Division of Wildlife is collaborating with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry to help pay for the processing of donated venison. Donations of extra deer will be accepted through the entire deer season. Hunters who give their deer to a food bank are not required to pay the processing cost as long as the deer are taken to a participating processor and while funding for the effort lasts. Counties being served by this program can be found online at www.fhfh.org.

Hunters who wish to share their success can submit a photo of themselves and the deer they killed this year to wildohio.com.

The white-tailed deer is the most popular game animal in Ohio, frequently pursued by generations of hunters. Ohio ranks 8th nationally in annual hunting-related sales and 10th in the number of jobs associated with the hunting-related industry. Each year, hunting has an $859 million economic impact in Ohio through the sale of equipment, fuel, food, lodging and more.

A detailed listing of deer-hunting rules is contained in the 2009-2010 Ohio Hunting Regulations, available where licenses are sold. It may also be viewed online at wildohio.com.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
