Lady Blue Knights defeat Rio Grande, former Laker Smith shines in loss

1/08/2010

Andrea Vogel 12-09 After an icy 140-mile commute through a snowstorm, the Red Storm from Rio Grande University failed to warm up in Urbana University’s Grimes Center tonight. The Blue Knight women’s basketball team got back in the win column with a 65-48 victory over their former NAIA rivals from Rio Grande.

The Red Storm proved to be ice cold from the very beginning and Urbana capitalized on their opponent's poor shooting. The Blue Knights raced out to a commanding 26-6 lead as Rio managed to connect on just 10% of their shots in the games’ first 13 minutes. A quick 11-0 Rio run, sparked by former Indian Lake standout Jenna Smith’s 5 points, helped cut the deficit to single digits, but the Blue Knights closed the half on an 8-4 spurt to put the game out of reach. The Red Storm never got the lead back down to single digits in the second half.

Urbana held Rio Grande to just 25% shooting on the night, while connecting on better than 41% of their shots.  Urbana also utilized its size advantage by outscoring Rio 34-24 in the paint.

The Blue Knights were led by four starters in double-digits. Freshman center Andrea Vogel (pictured) led the way with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Ashley Falknor and Jalyssa Jackson both flirted with triple-doubles. Falknor had 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Jackson had nearly identical numbers at 12 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Junior Unique Lane added 11, and sophomore Haley Ducey had 5 points to go with 6 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Junior Jessica Byrd played terrific defense off the bench, swiping 4 steals to go with 5 points.

Rio Grande sharpshooter Jenna Smith led all scorers with 19 points.

With the win, Urbana improves to 8-6 on the season, while Rio Grande falls to 9-7.

The Blue Knights will host Marygrove University on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock.

Vito takes fourth in second Olympic trial (Audio included)

1/06/2010

Louie Vito competed in his second Olympic trial this week in Mammoth Mountain, California.

Vito made the finals Tuesday with a fourth place finish. Wednesday’s finals ended in an interesting fashion for Louie; after being in third place for most of the competition, it came down to a tiebreaker with Scotty Lago.

Lago ended up taking the third spot, sending Louie down to fourth place.

To qualify for the Olympics, the best two finishes are calculated for each rider, and the top riders make the U.S. team.

Vito’s father, Lou, said the only way to guarantee a spot is to have two first place finishes, “and no one has two firsts, so nobody, mathematically is guaranteed a spot.”

Listen to Lou recap Wednesday's finals.

Louie competes again this weekend in Mammoth Mountain, with the qualifying round on Friday and finals on Saturday. The event will air on NBC on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
