Chiefs drop close one, Lakers stunned – Boys basketball scoreboard (Audio included)

Basketball on the radio Friday night featured the Bellefontaine Chieftains and the Indian Lake Lakers.

On 1390 WBLL, Bellefontaine traveled to take on a tough Springfield Shawnee squad.

The game was close throughout, including being tied at 43 with just over a minute remaining.

The Braves converted a free throw for the only point in that final minute, allowing for a 44-43 win over the Chieftains.

The Chiefs squandered a 21-16 halftime advantage.

The hosts captured the momentum by outscoring the Chiefs 14-7 in the third quarter.

Shawnee’s P.J. Howell was the State Farm Player of the Game, scoring 21 points. Teammate Steven Sarven tossed in 18 points, including 16 free throw attempts.

For Bellefontaine, Que Carter scored 11 points and Michael Bean added 10.

The Chiefs committed 15 turnovers; the Braves had 11 turnovers.

Urbana dominated the Indian Lake Lakers on 98.3 WPKO 55-31.

The win snapped the Hillclimbers three-game losing streak.

Urbana led 24-15 at the half and took control by outscoring Indian Lake 14-4 in the third quarter.

Sophomore post player Zach Stillings had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior guard Anthony Marino fired in 14 points.

For Indian Lake, junior Adam Reichert had a team-high 12 points.

Urbana improves to 7-4 overall and Indian Lake falls to 2-9.

Girls sweep, boys swept – Chieftain bowling

The Bellefontaine Chieftains were on the lanes Friday night, taking on the Kenton Ridge Cougars.

The Girl’s Varsity slipped away with a close victory, 2296-2275.

Amber Devine had honors with 221 and 174 games for a 395 series. Jessi Moore bowled a 195/366 and Jodi White a 179/339.

The Lady Chiefs Reserves won big, 1669-1442.

Emily Everman had top score with a 160/288, Jacey Vermillion a pair of 139s for a 278, and Bethany Cruce a 130.

Both boys teams fell to the Cougars.

The Chieftain Varsity lost 2931-2517.

Top bowler was Ethan Lucas with a 247/418. Andy Newman bowled a 241/393, and T J Garman a 208 / 373. Roman Miller added a 192 and Mark Salmons a 188.

The Chieftain Boys Reserve fell 2377-2070.

Paul Henline bowled well, posting a 221 and a 193 for a 414. Mason Yocum rolled a 183.

Lucas leads Bellefontaine bowlers past Shawnee

The Bellefontaine varsity bowling teams split a league match against Springfield Shawnee yesterday.

In varsity boys, the Chiefs outscored the Braves 2733 to 2618.

Ethan Lucas led the way with a 233 and a 224 for a 457 series.

Mark Salmons and T.J. Garman each had a 391 series.

Roman Miller recorded a 203 and Andy Newman added a 199.

In the JV boys match, Springfield Shawnee defeated Bellefontaine 2041 to 1827.

Paul Henline shot a 327 series.

Grant Brugler added a 194.

In varsity girls, Springfield Shawnee edged Bellefontaine 2212 to 2200.

Jessi Moore recorded games of 179 and 176 for a team-high 356 series.

Amber Devine followed with a 173 and a 165 for a 338 series.

Caiti McLaughlin shot a 183 and Jody White had a 165.

There was no official JV match because both teams only had four players.

Jascey Vermillion had a 148 and a 184 for a 333 series.

Sabreena Escamilla recorded a 133 and Bethany Cruce added a 132.

As featured on 98.3 WPKO, West Liberty-Salem beat host Benjamin Logan 50-45 in varsity girls basketball Thursday.

Alexis Smith led the Tigers with 17 points.

For Benjamin Logan, Brooke Richard tossed in 13 points.

After starting 1-4, WLS has won six straight games to improve to 7-4, 5-1.

Benjamin Logan falls to 3-8, 2-5.

Both head coaches spoke with Ken Keller after the close contest.

The Riverside varsity girls team edged Upper Scioto Valley 61-60 in overtime.

The Rams forced overtime by outscoring the Pirates 23-17 in the fourth quarter.

Senior Amelia Carter led Riverside with 15 points, 16 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 5 steals.

Erica Snapp tossed in 13 points.

Whitney Jenkins, Brooklynn Purtee, and Abby Heaberlin each added 7 points.

In JV action, Upper Scioto Valley beat Riverside 42-23.

Jr. High finals:

Despite trailing much of the contest, the Bellefontaine eighth grade boys basketball team improved to 5-1 with a hard-fought, comeback victory over Benjamin Logan Thursday night by a final score of 43-38.

Nick Heydinger had 13 points to lead the Chiefs and Jarrod Houchin added 11.

The Raiders were paced by Dalton Green who notched a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds, David Wenger added nine points, and Kyler Young netted seven.

The Chiefs are in action again next Tuesday at home against Kenton.

The Bellefontaine 7th grade team handled Benjamin Logan 40-6.

Eight different Chiefs scored.

Bellefontaine improves to 4-2.

West Liberty-Salem’s junior high boys basketball teams earned a sweep of Triad Thursday night.

The eighth grade team won its sixth consecutive game, after beginning the year with two losses, posting a 39-33 victory Thursday. Kyle Crawford led the Tigers with 10 points, David Branham added nine, Todd Pease tallied eight and Taylor Cordell chipped in with seven.

The eighth grade Tigers improve to 6-2.

The seventh grade team had a far easier time en route to their seventh victory of the season, defeating Triad by a final score of 36-16. The Tigers were led by Trent Thomas, who scored 10 points, Tanner Lane added eight, and Conner Woods and Ben Burden each added six points in the win.

The Bellefontaine 8th grade girls team defeated Benjamin Logan 26-19.

Jazmyn Haley led the way with 10 points and 7 rebounds, Kameren Haley recorded 6 points and 6 rebounds, and Holly Parker tallied 6 points and 9 rebounds.

For Benjamin Logan, Emmalee Rumney had a team-high 8 points.

The Raiders were just 3-17 on free throws.

The 7th grade Lady Chiefs edged Benjamin Logan 30-26.

Brenda Johnson poured in 20 points and McKenzie Brunswick added 7.

Leading the way for Benjamin Logan (3-5) were Jessica Rutan with five points and Kessie Rose with four points.

Indians Lake’s seventh grade girls basketball team  traveled to Indian Valley Thursday night, earning a 27-18 victory. Sydney Miller lead all scores with eight points; Gabi Maier added seven in the victory.

The West Liberty-Salem 8th grade girls ran past Triad 37-8.

Rachel Loffing had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals, Taylor Day recorded 8 points and 2 assists, Kaylin Frederick dropped in 7 points, and Abbey Siegenthaler added 6 points and 5 steals.

The 7th grade Lady Tigers lost 20-17.

Rachel Ritter had 6 points, Laura Godwin tallied 4 points and 5 rebounds, and Ashley Holleron grabbed 11 rebounds.

For Triad, Jenna Welty scored a game-high 8 points.

Graham surprises Indian Lake in girls basketball

Graham defeated host Indian Lake 66-47 in high school girls basketball last night, snapping the Lakers eight-game winning streak.

Darcy Zirkle led the Falcons with 20 points, Tori Purk tallied 15 points, and Darby Zirkle added 13 points.

For Indian Lake, Aushele Sarver scored a team-high 12 points.

Senior Cori Blackburn added 11.

Indian Lake is 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the CBC. The Lakers will host Greenon Saturday night.

Graham is 6-5 overall.

The JV Lakers won 42-22.

Leanne Reichert fired in 12 points.

Local youth wrestlers shine

The Bellefontaine Youth Wrestling Club competed in a Mad River youth tournament earlier this week.

Finishing as champions in their weight class were Austin Allen, Alex Eicher, Ethan Yoder, Holden Nease, and Gaige Reeves.

Finishing in 2nd place were Crew Fullerton, Phillip Francis, Dezmin Lyburtus, Adam Williams, Javon Pence, Wesley Frilling, Aiden Navarro, Daniel Miller, Christian Griffith, and Beau Salyer.

Third place finishers included Elijah True, Aiden Sullivan, Garrett Coons, Dylan Christman, Skylar Levering, Issac Griffith, Evan Baker, and Devin Frilling.

Finishing in fourth place were Lincoln Howell, Zach Close, Kyle Southard, Owen O'Connor, Brent Johnson, Shane Crawford, and Koby Griffith.

Benjamin Logan bowlers defeat West Liberty-Salem

The Benjamin Logan bowling teams had a very successful night Wednesday against West Liberty-Salem, with all three competing teams defeating the Tigers.

The boys varsity won 2326 to 2095. Top scorers were Derek Schmit with 193 and 175; Paul Scales with 179 and 176; Matt Johnson with 186 and Eric Elson with 173.

Top Tiger scorers were Pat McMacken with a 187 and a 332 series, and Steven Klingler with a 182, a 356 series.

The varsity girls defeated the Tigers 2308 to 1882. Top scorers for the Lady Raiders were Brittney Poling with 226 and 180; Trinnity Jackson with 212 and 187; and Colleen Huey with a 168.

Top scorers for the Lady Tigers were Brittney Lewis with a 187, a 317 series, and Janessa Huffman with a 166.

The J.V. girls defeated West Liberty as well, 1892 to 1735. Leading the Raiders were Hillary Lantz with 184 and 167, and Shannon Tynan with 187.

J.V. top scorers for the Tigers were Megann Boyd with 165, a 323 series and Evan Bailey with a 156, a series of 285.

Chiefs, Raiders, Tigers fall in varsity bowling Tuesday night

Bellefontaine fell to Graham in boy’s varsity bowling action Tuesday night, 2765-2562.

Ethan Lucas rolled a 279 and a 203, posting a 482 series to lead the Chiefs. Mark Salmons bowled a 196 game, 384 series and T.J.  Garman rolled a 288 game for a 371 series.

The Chiefs dropped the girl’s match, too, 2239-2161.

Jessi Moore bowled a 222 game, posting a 366 series. Jody White rolled a 191 game for a 356 series and Caiti McLaughlin bowled a 152 game, tallying an even 300 for the series.

Benjamin Logan’s boys varsity bowling team fell to Mechanicsburg Tuesday, 2719-2562.

Paul Scales led the Raiders, bowling a 244 and a 230 for a 474 series. Matt Johnson, too, was effective, bowling a pair of 209’s for a 418 series, Jordan Cayot added a 202 and Colt Stover rolled a 187 and 185 for Ben Logan.

The girl’s varsity team forged a split with the Indians, however, by a final tally of 2222-2182.  

Trinnity Jackson led the Raiders, bowling a 210 and 168. Brittney Poling chipped in nicely with a 178 and a154 and Taylor Burk bowled a 156 and a152 in the victory.

Lastly, Northeastern narrowly defeated West Liberty in boys varsity bowling, 2155 to 2106.

High scores for the Tigers: Brock Bahan with a 257, a 427 series and Steven Klingler with a 192, a 329 series.

The Tigers’ girl’s varsity bowling team fell to Northeastern as well, 1836-1819.

Leading the Tigers were Codi McNutt with a 178, 319 series and Cheyenne McNutt with a 156, 283 series.

West Liberty’s JV girl’s bowling team did earn a win Tuesday, defeating Northeastern 1586-1288.

High scores for WLS: Kristyn Burnham with a 140, 225 series and Megann Boyd with a 137, high series of 255.

Chiefs, Tigers win; good night for Indian Lake hoops (audio included)

As featured Tuesday night on WBLL, Bellefontaine’s varsity boys basketball team handled Kenton 61-39.

Kenton led 15-11 after one quarter, but the Chiefs outscored the visitors 34-14 over the next two quarters.

The win moves the Chiefs to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the CBC.

Que Carter led the way for Bellefontaine, scoring 15 points. Nate Dodds tossed in 13 and Michael Bean added 12.

The loss drops Kenton to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Curtis Heydinger led Kenton with 13 points.

The Chiefs are in action again Friday night at Springfield Shawnee on 1390 WBLL.

The Wildcats head to Ottawa-Glandorf.

Airing on WPKO Tuesday night, West Liberty-Salem defeated Benjamin Logan 66-44.

Collin Link led WLS with 12 points and 15 rebounds and Jared Merrick tossed in 16 points.

Ben Rutan dropped in 10 points and Ryan Ropp had 8 points.

Collin Pukett paced Benjamin Logan with 10 points.

Kyle Baughman led the Pirates with 21 points and 9 rebounds.

Kyle Hurley added 10.

The Cardinals won the JV game 58-28.

In varsity girls, Jackson Center beat host New Bremen 38-30.

Taylor Cummons led the Tigers with 18. Heather DeVelvis and Dink May each added 8 points.

JC is 7-4.

Jr. High finals:

Indian Lake’s eighth grade boy’s basketball team defeated Springfield Shawnee Tuesday, by a final score of 51-44.

Montel Morgan led all scorers for the Lakers with 18 points. Brennan Lump added 16 and Christian Grider had nine points including four clutch free throws in the game’s final minute to seal the win. 

The Lakers are now 6-3 on the season.

Indian Lake’s eighth grade girl’s basketball team also defeated Shawnee Tuesday by a final score of 29-16 to better their season record to 6-4. The Lakers play again Thursday at Indian Valley.

The 7th grade Lady Lakers fell to Possum 38-15.

Sydney Miller, Gabi Maier, and Taylor Dixon each had 4 points.

BHS wrestlers sweep tri-meet

The Bellefontaine varsity wrestling team picked up two big wins Monday night at Urbana High School.

The Chieftains started the night by beating Kenton 52-21.

Picking up wins versus the Wildcats were 103 pound freshman Thoryn Jackson, 112 pound sophomore John Maurice, 125 pound junior Corbin Messner, 135 pound junior Michael Prater, 145 pound sophomore Travis Francis, 152 pound freshman Nate Miller, 160 pound senior Greg Huffman, 171 pound freshman Matt Price, 189 pound sophomore Taylor Cayot, and 215 pound junior Cheyenne Coyer.

The Chiefs then defeated rival Urbana 36-27.

Jackson, Maurice, Prater, Francis, Huffman, and Coyer posted wins by fall to secure the bonus points for the victory.

Lady Chiefs fall at Sidney, Jr. High basketball scoreboard

The Bellefontaine varsity girls basketball team lost at Sidney 55-45 Monday night.

Whitney Rader scored a team-high 12 points.

Regan Price and Dominque Brown each added 10 points.

BHS is 2-9 overall.

The JV Lady Chiefs beat the Yellow Jackets 42-32.

Aubrey Close led the attack with 15 points.

Cassie Campbell recorded 10 points and Julia Hunt tossed in 7 points.

The JV team is 7-4.

Jr. High finals:

The Bellefontaine Middle School girls were in action as well Monday night, with the 8th grade losing to Urbana 47-29.

Kameren Haley led the Lady Chiefs with 11 points, followed by Shauna Smith with 8.

The 7th grade also lost to Urbana 44-23.

Brenda Johnson led the Chieftains with 13 points and McKenzie Brunswick added 8.

The girls are 2-4 and will visit Benjamin Logan on Thursday.

The Indian Lake 8th grade girls team defeated Northwestern 30-26.

Ashton Falor led the Lakers with 11 points.

The girls are now 5-4 on the season.

The Indian Lake 7th grade girls beat Northwestern 33-17.

Gabi Maier was the high scorer for the Lakers with 13. Taylor Dixon added 8 points.

The Lakers travel to Possum on Tuesday.

The Benjamin Logan 8th grade girls handled Tecumseh 40-16.

The Raiders hit six three-pointers.

The West Liberty-Salem boys started the week off right with both junior high teams defeating South Vienna.

The 8th grade won 39-23.

David Branham was the high scorer for the Tigers with 19.

Todd Pease dropped in 8 points.

The 8th grade is now 5-2.

The 7th grade improved to 6-1 on the season with their 41-14 victory.

Michael McIntosh led the team with 16.

Ben Burden had 8 points and Conner Woods added 5.

The Tigers play Thursday at home against Triad at 5:00 p.m.

The Benjamin Logan 8th grade boys fell to Tecumseh 40-24.

Parker Codora scored a team-high 9 points.

David Wenger recorded 7 points and Austin Ahle added 6 points.

The Benjamin Logan 7th grade boys were defeated by Tecumseh 32-19.

David Nease led the Raiders with 11 points, and Tanner Rader and Trent Kramer each had 3.

The Raiders drop to 3-3 on the season.

The boys travel to Bellefontaine Thursday with tip off at 5:30.

Indian Lake romped over Urbana 49-27 to move to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the CBC.

Sadie Oyer powered the Lakers with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Cori Blackburn added 10 points.

The Laker’s JV won close 46-44. Claire Maier scored 15 points. The JV are 8-3.

Indian Lake hosts Graham Wednesday.

West Liberty-Salem edged Springfield CC 54-52. The Tigers are 6-4 (5-1 OHC).

Becka Peterson led the Tigers with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Tyler Lane added 11.

WL rolled in the JV contest 53-15 to raise their record to 9-1 (6-0). Kelsey Helms scored 19 and Kaycee Daniels 15.

The Tigers visit Ben Logan Thursday.

Riverside stomped Fairlawn 71-32.

Five Pirates posted double figure scores, led by Erica Snapp with 14 points. Sarah Schindewolf, Brittany Shough, and Abby Heaberlin each scored 12 points, and Amelia Carter added 10.

In the JV game, the Pirates also dominated, winning 44-6 behind Kayla Smith’s 14 points.

Benjamin Logan lost a tight contest to Greenon 37-34. Ben Logan is now 3-7 (2-5 CBC).

Sarah Yoder led the Raiders with 12 points, and Brooke Richard scored 10.

The Raiders also dropped the JV game 38-31. Ciarra Wirick was the top scorer with 9 points.

Jackson Center defeated host Botkins 50-39 Saturday afternoon.

The game was tied 33-33 after three quarters, but the Tigers outscored the Trojans 17-6 in the decisive fourth quarter.

Junior guard Taylor Cummons led the winners with 18 points. Classmate Dink May added 12.

For Botkins, Jenna Schmerge poured in 17 points.

After starting 0-4, Jackson Center has reeled off six straight wins to improve to 6-4.

JC will visit New Bremen Tuesday night.

In 8th grade, the Raiders won 14-12 to move to 4-2, dropping the Lakers to 4-4.

Pirates downed by Anna – Saturday Boys BBall Scoreboard

The Riverside Pirates played a strong first half against Anna, keeping the score 27-25 Anna at the break, only to have the Rockets take off in the third quarter to put the game out of reach before winning by a final of 76-53.

Kyle Hurley poured in 26 points for the Pirates. Kyle Baughman scored 14 and added 7 rebounds.

Anna won the JV game 74-34. Top scorer for Riverside was G. Miller with 18.

West Liberty-Salem swept two junior high games from Miamiview.

The 8th graders won 45-22. Top scorers for the Tigers were David Branham with 15 and Kyle Crawford with 14. The 8th grade is now 4-2.

The 7th graders rolled 45-15. Leading the Tigers were Conner Woods with 12 points, Ben Burden scored 11, and Trent Thomas added 6. The Tiger 7th grade is now 5-1.

The Jr. High teams play again when they host South Vienna Monday at 5:00.

The Ben Logan 7th grade fell to Indian Lake 41-24. For the Raiders, Tanner Rader scored 11 and Joel Spatz 7. The Raiders are 3-2 (2-1 CBC). They host Tecumseh Monday at 5:30.
