Benjamin Logan avenges boys loss to Bellefontaine with a girls win, Lady Lakers roll at Stebbins

1/20/2010

The scores from the Benjamin Logan and Bellefontaine girls basketball game Wednesday night seemed to be switched from Tuesday’s boys game, as the Raiders defeated the Lady Chiefs, 52-27 on 98.3 WPKO.

Bellefontaine jumped out to an early 7-4 in the first quarter and would lead by one (7-6) after the first stanza.

The second quarter belonged to Benjamin Logan.  The Raiders used a zone defense to limit Bellefontaine’s inside chances and outscored the Chiefs 15-3 in the frame to lead 21-10 at halftime.  Bellefontaine didn’t score a bucket until the 2:00 mark of the second quarter.  Raiders coach Donnie Sosby went to the zone defense early in the first quarter after center Whitney Rader scored two easy baskets in the post against a man-to-man defense.  It worked as the Raiders only allowed six more points in the half with 2 of those points coming on a put back from a Chiefs missed free throw.

Bellefontaine continued to scrap in the third quarter as the Chiefs cut a fourteen point deficit down to eleven a few times with chances to get it to single digits, but the Raiders scored a few late third quarter buckets and after three the Raiders secured a 13 point lead at 33-20.

The first few minutes of the fourth quarter would be key.  A couple of quick scores by either team would determine the game.  Out of the between quarter timeout it was Benjamin Logan who iced the game with a 9-2 run in the first two minutes of the quarter.  The Raiders continued to grow throughout the quarter and Benjamin Logan cruised to a 52-27 victory outscoring Bellefontaine in the fourth quarter 19-7.

Brooke Richard led the Raiders with 16 points, followed by Sarah Yoder with 12 points and Samantha Terrill with 13.  These players were name the State Farm Insurance Players of the Game.

Leading the Chieftains were Whitney Rader with 11 points and Aaliyah Smith with 10.

Our Ohio Hi-Point Career Center play of the game was Coach Sosby’s coaching decision to switch to a zone defense early in the first quarter.  That switch changed the entire game.

Indian Lake cruised past host Dayton Stebbins 78-61 in varsity girls basketball Wednesday.

Senior guard Cori Blackburn poured in a team-high 21 points.

Christina Knief had 17 points, Aushele Sarver fired in 15 points, Katelyn Stannard added 9 points, and Sadie Oyer tallied 8 points and 18 rebounds.

Indian Lake continues to lead the CBC Mad River division at 12-2 overall and 8-2 in league play.

The JV Lakers rolled 54-32.

Brittany Roby tossed in 13 points.

Coach Burden’s team is 11-3.

The Lakers will visit Northwestern Saturday night.

This week’s girls basketball coverage continues Thursday night with Riverside traveling to West Liberty-Salem on WPKO.

Chiefs run past Raiders (Video included)

1/19/2010

IMG_7629 As heard Tuesday night on WBLL the Bellefontaine varsity boy’s basketball team snapped a modest two-game losing streak with a 78-30 blowout victory over cross-town rival Benjamin Logan.

Tuesday’s win comes just days removed from the team’s first ever loss to Dayton Stebbins, a 65-48 loss last Saturday night.

The Chiefs were led by Michael Bean who scored 13 points to lead all scores. Matt Gump scored a career-high 11 points and Nate Dodds added 10 in the victory.

The Raiders were led by Collin Puckett who scored 12 points for Benjamin Logan.

The Chiefs improve to 6-5 (4-4) overall with the victory; Benjamin Logan drops to 2-11 (2-7) with the loss.

The game began as well as the Raiders could’ve hoped when Puckett hit a three-point shot to open the scoring after Benjamin Logan forced a stop on the game’s opening possession.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, it was the only lead the team would boast all night.

Bellefontaine outscored Benjamin Logan 18-2 to close the opening quarter and carry an 18-5 advantage into the second stanza.

The lead ballooned in the second quarter as an increasingly desperate Benjamin Logan squad was forced to take more chances defensively in an effort to combat Bellefontaine’s rather sizeable size advantage in the post and the Chiefs led 42-15 at halftime.

The Chiefs will look to defeat Kenton Ridge for the second time this season Friday night; that game can be heard on WBLL.

The Raiders are in action again next Tuesday night when they travel to Tecumseh.

Watch both Bellefontaine Head Coach Henry Stolly and Benjamin Logan Head Coach Scott Vermillion talk about Tuesday’s game with Bill Tipple.
