Miracle shot sinks Lady Blue Knights

1/28/2010

Up three points with 2 seconds remaining, the Urbana University women’s basketball team was probably thinking worst-case scenario involved overtime. Ohio Dominican University’s chances certainly looked bleak. Taking the ball out of bounds at half court, the Blue Knights forced the Panthers to pass the ball to freshman Tenia Scarver (Xenia, OH/Kettering Fairmont HS) just in front of the half-court line. From 35-feet out, Scarver heaved a prayer towards the basket, and the prayer was answered. Not only did the shot bank in for the improbable tie, but Scarver also drew a foul on the play and sank the game-winning free throw with one tick left on the clock. The Panthers had stunned their rivals, stealing a 55-54 win from the Blue Knights’ grasp.

The loss was Urbana’s second in four days to an in-state rival in the midst of a 6-game winning streak. On Saturday, a hot Lake Erie College squad beat the Blue Knights by 11, but Wednesday night’s loss was much more heartbreaking because Urbana built a 20-point first half lead. Slowly and methodically, the Panthers whittled away at Urbana’s lead. On three separate occasions, the Panthers cut the deficit to one point, but the Blue Knights always responded with a small run of their own.

Finally, with under a minute to play, the Panthers took control of the game for the first time since leading 2-0, but again, the Blue Knights responded. An Andrea Vogel lay-up and two Haley Ducey free throws appeared to seal the victory for the Blue Knights with just seconds remaining. However, the stage was set for Scarver’s heroics.

Despite the loss, the Blue Knights received strong performances from a trio of players. Gail Hartings scored a team-leading 13 points, including 11 during Urbana’s strong first half. Ducey and Vogel each added 12 in defeat.

The Blue Knights (12-9) now have 9 days off until returning home to host Oakland City University. Urbana defeated OCU by 10 on the road less than 2 weeks ago. The Blue Knights and Mighty Oaks tip off at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6th. The men’s game will take place afterwards at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the Urbana University athletic department will collect donations for the American Red Cross’ Haiti relief efforts. Earlier this season, the athletic department collected more than $600 during a basketball doubleheader for the local Toys for Tots chapter.
