Mad River Mountain enjoys snow storms while most grumble (Audio included)
2/19/2010
Most people get sick of snow right about this time in the year, especially after the snowfall totals this year in February alone.
From 11 a.m. on February 5 to 11 a.m. on February 6, Bellefontaine received around 16 inches of snow. Road conditions were so bad that a Level 3 Snow Emergency was declared throughout Logan County. ODOT and county crews were out for 16 hour shifts and schools countywide were closed for a week or more. Some schools even had students attend on Presidents’ Day on February 15 to make up for the lost calamity days.
But one business that is definitely not complaining about all of the snow on the ground is Mad River Mountain. According to Brian Papworth, MRM’s Director of Marketing, the slopes get their busiest when classes and businesses are cancelled. He even talked about some kids who skipped school on Wednesday to hit the slopes.
“They weren’t out, other schools were out, but they weren’t out and they actually skipped school to come and enjoy the uncrowded slopes and the great conditions we were offering.”
One of the biggest things that people don’t know about MRM, according to Mr. Papworth, is the fact that the resort has great snow conditions throughout the season, even if there isn’t fresh snow from the sky. “We actually have snow that’s just as good as what falls from the sky, but then when we get natural snow people get excited because there’s snow on the ground.
A total of 22.55 inches of snow have fallen in Bellefontaine in February so far this year, according to the Bellefontaine Wastewater Treatment Plant. Mad River Mountain has much more right now with a 60 inch snow base.
The Logan County Engineer’s office says that it takes 3 to 3 1/2 hours to plow each snow district and recently released a statement thanking county residents for their patience during the recent snow storms.
There is a chance for more snow this weekend in the area. A system is currently moving through the Midwest, with snow forecast for Saturday and a snow-rain mix is expected for Sunday.
Louie Vito finishes fifth in Winter Olympic Snowboard Halfpipe Competition (Audio and Pictures included)
2/19/2010
After a long journey from Dancing with the Stars to the Olympics, Louie Vito wrapped up an eventful year Wednesday night in the Winter Olympic halfpipe finals.
After placing fifth in his first run with a score of 39.1, behind teammates Scotty Lago and Shaun White, Louie looked to improve on his second run. He did just that, but only by three-tenths of a point. Vito stayed in fifth place for the remainder of the competition. Teammates Shaun White and Scotty Lago scored the Gold and Bronze medals.
The support from Logan County has been tremendous for Louie, and a select few fans showed their support at Mad River Mountain to watch the finals.
Kris Swisher (pictured above, watching Louie’s first run) has been at the forefront of the community support, running the events at the Holland Theatre during Dancing with the Stars and asking Bellefontaine City Council to make February 12 Louie Vito Day.
She was thrilled to see him in the Olympics, but was not so happy with the end results.
“Fifth place is fifth in the world. He’s on top of the world being out there in the Olympics,” she said, “I’m disappointed for him, but I’m not disappointed in him at all.”
Louie’s father, Lou, said that the family is very proud of him, and also said that Louie is “once an Olympian, always an Olympian.”
BHS Mock Trial Team Competes at Districts (Audio and picture included)
2/18/2010
Written by student reporter and BHS junior Jessica Haushalter
The Bellefontaine High school Mock Trial team competed in the district competition at the Putnam County Courthouse in Ottawa on February 5th. This is the first year that BHS has had a Mock Trial team. The group was put together after senior Jessica LeVan told gifted coordinator Debbie Ellis about her interest in law. The team is made up of juniors Taylor Manahan (pictured right), Taylor Angle (pictured center), Jessica Haushalter (pictured left), senior Jessica LeVan, and freshman Alexa Haushalter. The group was coached by patent attorney Joan Haushalter.
Participants in Mock Trial receive a booklet at the beginning of the season which tells them about the case they will debate. Each team must have attorneys that represent both the Plaintiff and Defendant side. Also each team must prepare the people that will play witnesses for the trial. On the day of competition, schools compete against one another by playing out a pretend trial.
This year the Mock Trial case was about a high school student who was enrolled in an AP (advanced placement) history class. The student, known as “Alex Leslie”, was suspended for violating a school disciplinary code of the fictional “Erehwon High School”. Alex had created a blog and then posted comments critical of his/her history teacher on the blog. After being suspended, Alex filed a lawsuit against the school district saying that the school had violated his/her First Amendment rights. The Plaintiff attorneys had to argue that Alex Leslie’s First Amendment rights were violated, while the Defense argued that Alex’s blog caused a significant disruption to the school process and therefore the blog was not protected under the First Amendment.
The Mock Trial teams are given examples of case law, witness statements, and exhibits to use when presenting their case.
Bellefontaine High school’s Mock Trial team did not move on to regional competition. However, Taylor Angle received an Outstanding Witness Award and Jessica Haushalter received an Outstanding Attorney Award at the district competition.
Benjamin Logan High school and West Liberty-Salem High school’s Mock Trial teams competed in a different district competition than BHS. The two teams were at the Union County Courthouse in Marysville. Both teams moved on to regional competition which will be held on February 26th.
For BLHS, seniors Allison Baker and Andrea “Andy” Dunn both received Outstanding Witness Awards. Senior Emily Jones received an Outstanding Attorney Award.
Listen to BHS junior Taylor Manahan talk about her role in Mock Trial.
Listen to BHS senior Jessica LeVan talk about how Mock Trial got started.
Listen to BHS junior Taylor Angle talk about the Mock Trial case.
Listen to BHS Mock Trial coach Joan Haushalter talk about the purpose of Mock Trial.

Fair Board makes up canceled meeting (Audio and picture included)
2/17/2010
The Logan County Fair Board met in regular session Wednesday night a week removed from canceling its previously scheduled meeting because of last week’s snowstorm.
During her report, Secretary Bev Cotterman reports the fair board received notification its 2010 funding from the county commissioners will be $5000. This figure represents a decrease in funding of approximately 60% from previous allotments, according to Board President Keith Watson.
Action taken by the board voted Wednesday night saw the group accept estimates from Strayer to repair the heat exchanger in the furnace serving the Grange Building at a cost of $889 and Thompson Electric to replace the existing three phase panel with a single phase panel for heat, route all other circuits to the main panel and install a new thermostat and wiring to control heat in the Grange Building at a cost of $875.
Currently, Grange Building is being heated using only electric-based heat along the floorboards and space heaters throughout the building to help keep the pipes from freezing. Consequently, Watson reports the electric bill for the grounds was unusually high—about $3,000—for the month of January.
The board also voted Wednesday night to accept the bid from Signature Sound for $2,900 to run the sound system for the upcoming fair. Signature Sound came very highly recommended from Putnam County, where it also runs sound for the county fair.
The board has already begun planning for post-fair week events as well. Cotterman, during her report discussed a pair of possible events for August or September; those events include bull riding and AMA motorcycle races.
The Fair Board will meet again March 10th.
DeGraff Village Council hears about $90,000 in delinquent property taxes (Audio and picture included)
2/16/2010
DeGraff Village Council met in regular session Tuesday night, with no resolutions or ordinances on the table.
But there was still plenty to be discussed in the village. More than $90,000 was reported in delinquent property taxes in the village, and with 35% of those taxes going to DeGraff the village takes a large hit in revenue.
Also discussed at the meeting was the work of two sheriff’s deputies that were assigned to patrol the DeGraff and Quincy area for extra drug concerns. Deputy Tom Watson talked about specific drug problems, citing heroin and prescription drug abuse as Pleasant and Miami Townships’ main problems.
Mayor Gary Comer said, “My concern is hopefully it doesn’t get in to any of the younger kids. It’s bad enough that I’m glad that they’re down here patrolling and investigating things and taking care of it.”
After decades of attempting to acquire CSX property in the village, council finally received the deed for the area at Koke and Smith Streets.
Mayor Comer said that the area is currently being used by the village for snow removal, but during warmer months the village will use it as municipal parking.
DeGraff Village Council will meet again on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7 p.m.
Williams sentenced 23 years to life for killing his mom (Audio and picture included)
2/16/2010
An Indian Lake man who killed his mother fourteen months ago was sentenced to 23 years to life in prison Tuesday afternoon by Logan County Common Pleas Court Judge Mark O’Connor.
Last month, Brandon Williams (pictured), 24, of Lakeview, admitted to killing his mom, 51-year-old Laura Annon. He pled guilty to murder with a gun specification, felonious assault, and abuse of a corpse.
In exchange for the plea, the prosecutor’s office dropped the charges of aggravated murder, kidnapping, safecracking, and drug possession.
Authorities believe that Williams turned violent while trying to get his mother’s prescription drugs at their 8854 Prince Road home (Kings Landing) on December 11th, 2008.
He shot his mom once with a .22 rifle and then beat her with the gun. After that, Williams got a shotgun from his bedroom and fatally shot his mother in the shoulder and head. He then went to the garage and cut open the safe that contained his mother’s medication.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office discovered the murder on the evening of December 18th while checking on Annon’s well-being. Relatives were concerned after not hearing from her for several days. Deputies found Williams in bed unresponsive from a drug overdose.
Defense attorney Marc Triplett said that Williams had a drug addiction since his early teens, which affected his behavior.
Judge O’Connor countered that drugs were not a factor in the murder. The judge said that taped conversations prove that Williams fought with Annon about wanting to use her car to go out. After she said no, an argument ensued and she was killed.
Williams’ stepbrother, Steve Fowler, 34, of Kingston (near Circleville), read an emotional letter in court. Fowler said he regretted agreeing to the plea deal with the prosecutor’s office. He said Williams should be sentenced to death.
Williams’ father also attended the sentencing.
Listen to Steve Fowler discuss the sentencing and the case with Bill Tipple.
Logan County Solid Waste District set to open another recycling center
2/16/2010
There will be a grand opening of a new Recycling Center on Sloan Boulevard Tuesday, February 23rd at 4:00 p.m. The center is called the Campbell Hill Recycling Center and is Recycling Center number 11.
Ohio Hi-Point Career Center cooperated with the Solid Waste District to allow construction and operation of a new Recycling Center on school property across from the Ohio Hi Point Land Lab. This Recycling Center will operate in the same manner as the other 10 Recycling Centers operating throughout the County.
The Campbell Hill Recycling Center will be open 24/7, have lights and video surveillance, and be a place to recycle cardboard, paper, household containers made of glass, plastics #1 & #2, steel and aluminum cans. A vending machine on site will vend green pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) trash bags for citizens wanting to dispose of trash in specially marked containers. A brochure rack on the shed at the site contains green brochures explaining how to use the recycling and the pay-as-you-throw trash service. This site, like the others, has a slot in the shed for household battery disposal as well as a slot for small plastic bag recycling.
Recycling is always free and the County Green PAYT trash bags cost $2 each and come in rolls of 5 bags as well as single bags. Green PAYT bags are also available at Wal-Mart, Tinsley’s at Indian Lake, and the Lakeview Village Office.
This Recycling Center is part of a system of convenient recycling facilities the District has built in the past two years. Four or five more centers are planned to complete the system.
OHIO DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES (ODNR)
DIVISION OF LITTER PREVENTION AND RECYCLING
For the past five years or so ODNR has offered grants to Solid Waste Districts and other governmental units to clean-up litter along roadways in the spring. The efforts of ODNR have partnered with those of Keep America Beautiful and Keep Ohio Beautiful as those organizations promote the “Great American Clean-Up” for three months each spring.
The ODNR grants are competitive and capped at $2,000 per organization. The Logan County Solid Waste District applied for the grant in January and received the award announcement last week. The focus of the Logan County grant will be to promote the “Great Logan County Road Cleanup” operating from March through May, 2010.
The strength of the application was contained in the existing broad collection of groups and individuals who already participate in the “Adopt a Road” program and the State “Adopt a Highway” litter cleanup program. The grant will pay for media use to encourage involvement from Logan County citizens and all manner of groups: families, Scouts, church groups, business, 4-H groups, and industrial participants. Logan County also has additional strength of the Keep Logan County Beautiful Committee. KLCB is an affiliation of environmental engineers from local industries, commercial, educational, and governmental leaders who gather four times a year to learn from each other and share information and methods to improve sustainability while enhancing environmental quality. KLCB members also regularly participate in road cleanup activities.
THE LOGAN COUNTY SOLID WASTE DISTRICT’S MATERIAL RECOVERY FACILITY (MRF) IS NOW OPERATIONAL.
Since April of last year the Solid Waste District has worked steadily on the new material recovery facility in Bellefontaine at 1100 South Detroit St., site of several former lumber yards. Many upgrades to the facility and property were needed and are nearing completion. The rear half of the building has been a beehive of activity for months building sorting lines with conveyors, sorters, and balers. The facility now receives all of the recycling materials from the 10 Recycling Centers and processes those materials for shipment to mills where it is further processed and recycled into new commercial products.
In January the facility was operating smoothly enough that all materials that were formerly trucked out of the county to Marysville by Allied Waste for processing are now being handled locally. In February the MRF began handling the curbside recycling from Bellefontaine and some of the material from West Liberty. In January the MRF received 65 tons of materials from the District Recycling Centers. It is anticipated that in February the tonnage number will approach 85 tons per month, eventually building to 100 tons per month as the system of Recycling Centers grows. In January 86.12 tons of materials were shipped from the MRF to mills and brokers. January also saw the start of revenue of $6,472 coming into the District from shipments in November.
When fully developed the District anticipates that revenues from commodity sales will support the operation of the MRF and provide stable “green” jobs in our community.

Crews begin demolition of Huntsville Elementary (Audio and picture included)
2/15/2010
The Indian Lake Board of Education battled the elements to gather inside district offices Monday night to meet in regular session.
During Monday’s meeting Superintendent Dr. Bill McGlothlin announced that demolition at Lakeview Elementary began Monday morning. McGlothlin reports that despite poor weather conditions the demolition contractors were able to take down the entire 1954 portion of the school and has already begun demolishing the older portion of the elementary.
According to McGlothlin, the demolition team will finish the project by early next week, at which time it will begin the demolition of Huntsville Elementary.
During his report McGlothlin notified board members the metal roof project at Indian Lake Middle School is nearly completed. The final punches will be placed in the roof when weather allows and the construction team will replace damaged concrete and landscaping at the middle school this spring, according to McGlothlin.
Additional action taken by the board Monday night saw the group accept resignations from Scott Whitsett, Tom Brademeyer (middle school track coaches) and Scott Cramer (high school softball coach) as well as approve a slew of supplemental contracts.
Those supplemental contracts include: Jesse Avila, assistant high school track; Chuck Ellerbrock, assistant high school track; Tom Brademeyer, assistant high school track; Britnie Allen, middle school track; Rod Beck, middle school track; Kim Hoyles, varsity softball; and Shelley Moore, substitute educational assistant.
The board will meet again March 15th.
