Heaberlin’s Shot Sends Pirates to Sectional Final (Audio and picture included)

2/24/2010

Riverside vs Houston 2-23-10 The #2 seed Houston Wildcats were rolling coming in to Wednesday’s Sectional Semi-Final winning 9 of their last 11 games including a win over Riverside.  But as they say “that’s why they play the game”.

Riverside exploded out of the first quarter tip and stunned Houston early pushing out to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter.

The Wildcats stormed back in the second quarter as they turned up the heat defensively and their leading scorer Jaclyn Willoughby really got things going.  Willoughby and the Cats continued to chip away at the Pirates lead until they took their first lead of the night at 23-21.  Riverside would answer with the last 4 points of the half and lead 25-23 at the break.  Willoughby had a game high 16 points at halftime.

Houston would seize the momentum out of the locker room as they outscored Riverside 11-2 in the first four minutes of the quarter to lead 34-27.  After a timeout Riverside cut in to the lead with a 12-8 end of the quarter run.  At the end of three it was Houston on top 42-39.

Riverside would keep pace with Houston throughout the fourth quarter and then with less than 4 minutes to go Erica Snapp would tie the game with two free throws 50-50.  Riverside would then score a couple buckets and hit free throws to grow their lead to 58-53 with under two minutes left.  Then with Houston driving the ball on the baseline Houston collided with senior Amelia Carter who tried to draw a charge, but she was whistled for her 5th personal foul and would have to watch the last 1:46 from the bench.  Houston used Carter’s absence to their advantage and scored 5 points in the final minute to tie the game 58-58 and with 12 seconds left Riverside called a timeout.  Pirates coach Dean Sanford needed a to draw up something for a bucket knowing his squad didn’t want to go to overtime without their leading scorer.  With the ball on the side Riverside inbounded.  The ball came to Brooklynn Purtee who dribbled across the top of the circle and when she tried to go inside the Houston defense dropped in the lane.  Purtee spotted Abby Heaberlin wide open on the right wing.  Heaberlin spotted up and nailed a three-pointer with just under 7 seconds remaining in the game and Riverside was back in front 61-58.  Houston had time for one more play, but Riverside had other plans as the Pirates would foul when the ball crossed half court.  The Wildcats missed both free throws and Riverside rebounded as time expired and celebrated an upset at Sidney High School.

During the game senior Amelia Carter scored her 1,000th career point and was honored after the game (pictured above).

Carter led the Pirates scoring with 20 points and 10 rebounds.  Heaberlin had 13 including the game winner and also had a team high 14 rebounds.  Erica Snapp scored in double figures with 14.
