Springfield Shawnee wins sectional title – Tournament Basketball Scoreboard

Sectional and district title games were played across the Southwest District last night.
Boys tournament finals:
Division II:
At Springfield High School, Springfield Shawnee defeated rival Kenton Ridge 52-41 to win the sectional championship.
The Braves avenged two regular season losses to the Cougars.
Division III:
Anna edged Preble Shawnee 59-51 in overtime to claim another sectional title.
Greeneview defeated Miami East 57-43.
Bethel knocked off Northridge 60-45.
Division IV:
Ft. Loramie stifled Mechanicsburg 59-25 to win the sectional crown.
Girls tournament finals (district title games):
Division II:
Dayton Chaminade-Julienne edged Kenton Ridge 56-51 in double overtime.
Indian Hill surprised Tipp City 63-44.
Christman advances at state wrestling meet; Graham takes home (another) state title

Of the four area varsity wrestlers to punch a ticket to the state meet in Columbus, only Indian Lake’s Kevin Christman, competing in the 171 lb. division, was able to make it out of the preliminary round Thursday.
After another day of competition,Christman is still alive.
Christman pinned Nick McCall of Wausoen 4:46 into the quarterfinal match Friday morning to earn a spot in the semi-finals where he met Joey Young of Athens.
In an exciting 7-5 decision, Christman defeated Young to earn an opportunity to wrestle for a state championship Saturday night where he’ll face a familiar foe, Graham’s Huston Evans, for the fourth time this season.
Dean Jenkins (1989) is the only Laker in school history to win a state wrestling championship.
Evans has defeated Christman the previous three meetings this season.
The Falcons easily wrapped up their 10th Division II State Wrestling Championship, tallying an alarming 185 points. Graham will be well-represented tomorrow night in the finals. Eight different Falcon wrestlers are searching for a state title. If all succeed, the the Falcons could surpass their own record of individual state winners with eight. Just last year, the Falcons crowned seven state champions.
Renegades cruise in youth soccer

In girls U11 indoor soccer, the Bellefontaine Renegades defeated Team Syrus 5-2 at Soccer First last night.
Zoe Price had three goals and Kateline Mathews scored twice.
Teammates Lilli Levan, Madison Everman, and Ryelee Clary played very well.
Area wrestlers compete at state meet

Four area wrestlers competed Thursday afternoon in the preliminaries at the OHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
Though four competed, only one wrestler advanced in tournament action.
Indian Lake senior Kevin Christman, making his second state appearance, defeated Dillon Magalski of Walsh Jesuit in the 171-division 2-1 to advance into Friday’s Quarterfinal. Christman’s strong showing comes on the heels of a second-place finish in the district meet.
In the 119 weight class, West Liberty-Salem junior Britt Wooten was defeated 8-4 by Aaron Branham of West Jefferson and then by a 10-8 decision at the hands of Luke Kern of Liberty Center. Wooten closes the year with a 42-10 record.
Bellefontaine’s John Maurice, a sophomore competing in the 112-division, closes his season with a 37-5 overall record after a 9-2 loss to Andrew Bertubin of Cambridge and a 13-4 setback against Joey Morris of Canton South.
Benjamin Logan senior Skylar Wohlgamuth, wrestling in the 152 weight class, fell to two-time state champion Harrison Hightower of Hunting Valley University School. Skylar then lost 3-2 against Caleb Hetterscheidt of Olentangy. Wohlgamuth closes the season with a 42-6 record.
Bellefontaine falls in overtime to Springfield Shawnee to end season (Audio and picture included)

As featured on 1390 WBLL, Bellefontaine looked for redemption against rival Springfield Shawnee in the Division II sectional boys basketball tournament semifinal at Springfield High School Monday night.
After winning two close regular season games, the Braves edged the Chiefs 41-39 in overtime.

Bellefontaine started fast and led 14-5 after the opening quarter.
Senior Nate Dodds sparked the Chiefs with three three-pointers in the first quarter.
Each team scored eight points in the second quarter and the Chiefs took a 22-13 lead into the half.
Bellefontaine used a combination of defenses, which kept Springfield Shawnee off balance early.
Senior standout P.J. Howell, who’s the second leading scorer in the CBC, was held scoreless in the first half.
Shawnee was a quicker, more efficient team in the third quarter.
Junior guard Steven Sarven scored seven quick points during a 9-0 run to tie the game at 22-22.
The Braves outscored the Chiefs 12-2 in the pivotal third quarter.
Dodds hit a three-pointer to give the Chiefs a 29-27 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Sarven hit two free throws with 1:14 remaining to tie the game at 36-36.
BHS head coach Henry Stolly then decided to hold the ball for the last shot.
After a timeout, the Chieftain freshman guard Matt Gump drove into the lane and was fouled with 4.9 seconds remaining.
He missed both free throws and Howell’s desperation heave from half court was off the mark at the end of regulation.
Howell, who was held to six points, gave the Braves the lead midway through overtime with a left wing three-pointer.
Senior Michael Hogan hit two free throws with 33 seconds remaining to give the Braves a five-point lead (41-36).
Gump buried a right wing three with 2.5 seconds left.
Howell was fouled on the inbounds with 1.6 seconds remaining. He missed the one-and-one and Chris Lowe’s three-quarter-court desperation shot was off line at the buzzer.

The Braves have won their last six meetings against Bellefontaine, including last year’s sectional final.
The Chiefs outrebounded the Braves 22-19.
The Braves had 9 turnovers to Bellefontaine’s 12.
Both teams shot 34 percent from the floor. BHS hit 6-12 three-point attempts.
The Chiefs end their season 12-10.
Dodds scored 15 and Lowe added 7.
It was the final game for seniors Dodds, Lowe, Que Carter, and Zach Showalter.
For Shawnee, Sarven scored a game-high 18.
The Braves (14-6) will play Kenton Ridge in the sectional championship Friday night at 7:30.
In the second game last night, Kenton Ridge defeated Urbana 48-38.
The Cougars opened the game with a 17-4 run.
In Division III boys tournament action, Greeneview beat Versailles 52-46.
In girls basketball, Jackson Center edged host Russia 38-35 in a regular season makeup game.
Taylor Cummons and McKenzie May each scored 11 and Heather DeVelvis added 10.
The Tigers finish the season 12-10.
Tigers win Tri-County League, Lady Lakers take second

The Tri-County League basketball tournament was held over the weekend.
In 6th grade boys, West Liberty-Salem won two close games to win the title.
In the semifinals, the Tigers defeated Indian Lake 27-24.
In the championship game, West Liberty-Salem edged Riverside 29-27.
Ryan Boyd tallied 28 points in the two games, Ross Kelley scored 10, and Justin Salyers added 6.
WLS (10-5) is coached by Dan Miller.
For Riverside (11-6), Landon Kelsey scored 16 in the championship.
Jessie Kean added 7.
The Pirates are coached by Chuck Stevens.
The Indian Lake 5th grade girls team finished second in the tournament.
After beating Fairbanks and West Liberty-Salem, the Lakers lost in the championship game to Graham 13-10.
Team members include Olivia Amspaugh, Hannah Avila, Alena Babyak, Morgan Evilsizor, Sammi Miller, Kelson Stidham, Kennedy Wallbrown, and Victoria Wauben.
The Lakers play in their final tournament next weekend at Botkins.
Youth soccer team drops weekend game

In boys 9 and under indoor soccer, the Bellefontaine Chiefs fell to the Vipers 7-2.
Derek Robb and Daunte George each scored a goal.
Nate Hecker and Preston Henry each recorded an assist.
Jack Clement made nine saves and Hecker added six saves.
Youth wrestler wins two weekend tournaments

Benjamin Logan 4th-grader Taylor Hites won a pair of youth wrestling tournaments over the weekend.
On Saturday, Hites won the Kentucky All Girls open tournament.
On Sunday, she captured the Tennessee All Girls open tournament.

As featured on 98.3 WPKO, the Indian Lake varsity girls basketball team fell to Kenton Ridge 61-42 in the Division II sectional title game at Xenia High School Sunday afternoon.
The game was cancelled on Saturday because of blowing and drifting snow.

The senior-laden Lakers started fast and led 17-15 after one quarter.
Kenton Ridge took its first lead of the game on a three-pointer with 4:22 remaining in the first half.
After that basket, the Cougars outscored the Lakers 10-7 to take a 33-29 lead at the half.
Senior standout Sadie Oyer dominated the interior in the first half with 15 points and numerous blocks.
Oyer was whistled for her second foul with two seconds remaining in the second first half.
She was then called for two fouls in the opening minutes of the third quarter.
Nonetheless, Indian Lake kept it close throughout the third quarter by hitting a couple of three-pointers and a variety of two-point field goals.
After three, KR led 46-41.
The Cougars turned up their half court defense in the final quarter and held Indian Lake to one point over the last eight minutes.

Despite the loss, Indian Lake’s senior class has left its mark on the program.
The Lakers won three league titles over the last four years and averaged more than 16 wins per season.
It was the final game for Oyer, Cori Blackburn, Katelyn Stannard, and Laura Blust.
Indian Lake finishes the season 18-5 and CBC Mad River co-champs (with Graham) at 12-4.
Oyer led the Lakers with 15 points, Blackburn dropped in 8, and Blust and Mikaela Oyer each added 6.

Kenton Ridge had three players in double figures.
Senior guard Saira House had 19 points, sophomore Mariah Harris scored 11, and Lonnie Lassiter added 10.
KR improves to 18-4. They will face perennial power Dayton Chaminade-Julienne in the Division II district title game at Mason Friday.
The Cougars also have a makeup game at Greenon on Tuesday.
Another Last Second Shot Sends Pirates to District Final; Jones Sinks Game Winner (Audio included)

Ashley Jones didn’t log a lot of minutes for Riverside Saturday, but she made the most of her playing time in the Sectional Final against Triad on 98.3 WPKO. Jones took a pass from Amelia Carter on the left wing and buried a three point shot to give Riverside a 61-60 lead with 5.6 left in the game.

The Pirates would hold off a Triad attempt at a game winner and the Pirates celebrated their first Sectional Championship in 20 years.
Riverside trailed much of the game falling behind in the second quarter by seven and cut the deficit to four (32-28) at halftime. Triad put together a 4-0 in the third quarter to claim their largest lead of the day at eight points 36-28. After a Pirates timeout they scored four straight and it would be back-and-forth for the rest of the third quarter with Triad leading 42-40 at the end of the frame.
The Cardinals kept the pressure on the Pirates pushing their lead to five points with less than three minutes remaining. Riverside continued to claw their way back and would tie the game 58-58 with just over a minute left. Then the Pirates fouled Machell Tyler who calmly hit two free throws for a 60-58 lead. Riverside moved the ball to half court and called their final timeout with just over 16 seconds remaining.
Out of the timeout Riverside lobbed the ball to the high post to Amelia Carter. Carter was quickly double-teamed. She spotted Ashley Jones wide open on the wing and threw her the ball and Jones launched and nailed the game winner with just of 5 seconds left.

Riverside claims their first Sectional since 1990 and will play next Saturday in the District Final at 11:00 from Tipp City High School. The Pirates haven’t won the District since 1987.
Triad was led in scoring by Kelsey Funderburgh with 18 and Hannah Smith added 16 with Addie Dixon chipping in 14 including 4 three pointers. Funderburgh was an outstanding 12 for 14 from the free throw line.
Equaling Funderburgh’s charity stripe shooting was Riverside’s Erica Snapp who scored 18 points and shot 12 for 13 from the line. Amelia Carter scored 18 points and Ashley Jones only had 4, but made the game winner.

Bellefontaine rolled over Northwestern 68-43 in their tournament opener Saturday in the feature game on WBLL.
For the Chiefs, Michael Bean scored 18 points and Nate Dodds 16.

In an evening doubleheader on 98.3 WPKO, it was not a good night for the local teams.
Ben Logan fell to Tipp City 68-29. The Raiders finish the season 2-19.
Eric Olsen led Ben Logan with 7 points.
Indian Lake lost to Eaton 77-32. The Lakers finish with a 5-16 record.
Russ Hogue scored 10 points for Indian Lake.
Eaton and Tipp City square off on Tuesday.

Kenton Ridge ran over Milton Union 78-50.
Graham shut down Greenon 61-28.
Jackson Center knocked off Fairlawn 46-31.
Fort Loramie pounded Riverside 73-28.

Southeastern defeated Seven Hills 51-43 to advance to take on Riverside in the District Final on Saturday.
Tippecanoe edged Carroll 31-26.
Fort Loramie beat Russia 49-26.
Anna drilled Miami East 61-34.
Versailles nipped Brookville 43-40.
The Indian Lake Lady Lakers take on Kenton Ridge today in the District II Sectional title game in Xenia. The game will be broadcast live on 98.3 WPKO. Game time is 2:30.
Maurice a District champ, three other locals advance to state wrestling tournament

Graham once again dominated the day at the Southwest District Division II Wrestling tournament at Goshen this weekend, but three local wrestlers still stamped their ticket to the state tournament next weekend.
Bellefontaine sophomore John Maurice brought home the district title at 112 lbs. Maurice defeated Kole Trigg of Washingon Court House 12-9 in the semifinals and then beat Josh Dingess of Athens 8-4 in the championship.
Kevin Christman of Indian Lake advanced to the state tournament at 171 lbs. with a 2nd place finish. Christman scored a 9-1 major decision over Nathan Silvus of Springfield Shawnee before falling 5-3 to Graham’s Huston Evans in the finals.
Benjamin Logan’s Skylar Wohlgamuth also advances with a 4th place finish at 152 lbs. After clinching his trip to state, Skylar lost a close match for third place to Selo Ramjatten of Greenville by a score of 3-1.
Laker Chris Schulz finished 5th and will be an alternate to state at 125 lbs.
Graham dominated the team results by posting champions in nine of the 14 weight classes, and added a second and a third to advance 11 wrestlers to Columbus. The Falcons finished the meet with 314 points, well ahead of 2nd place Greenville’s 85 points, for their 17th district title in the last 18 years.
The Lakers finished 15th (40 points), the Raiders 23rd (25.5), and the Chieftains 25th (24.5) out of 48 teams.
In the Division III tournament at Kettering Fairmont, Troy Christian edged Mechanicsburg for the team title 121-106.
West Liberty-Salem finished 22nd with 32.5 points.
The Tigers advanced 119 lb. Britt Wooten to state with a 2nd place finish. Wooten won a decision over Coldwater’s Jeremy Post to clinch a top two finish before losing to Jacob Haas of McComb in the title match.
Tiger Corey Thompson will be an alternate to state with his 171 lb. 5th place finish.
Garlock posts top 8 finish at state swimming finals

Bellefontaine High School Senior Christian Garlock capped off his second trip to the Ohio High School swimming finals with a 7th place finish in the 50 yard freestyle.
Garlock also qualified in the 100 freestyle, posting a 16th place finish.
Christian is the first swimmer from BHS to participate in the state finals twice.
