Carrie S. Christen

Carrie S. Christen, 57, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2010 at her residence.

She was born on June 15, 1952 in Ft. Wayne, IN to Charles M. Jr. and Eloise (Allen) Townsend who survive in Naples, FL.

On August 24, 1974 she married Thomas “Tom” Christen in Bellefontaine and he survives along with a son, Damon T. (Melisa) Christen of Logan; two daughters, Summer C. (Chad) Kellogg of Wooster and Ashley T. Christen of Toledo; and six grandchildren, Rebecca and Rachel Fuller, Ian Christen, Charlie Kellogg, Jacob Christen, and Chanelle Kellogg. A brother, Bruce Townsend and a sister, Linda Detrick, precede her in death.

Carrie was a 1970 graduate of Bellefontaine High School and in 1974 she graduated from Wilmington College. A homemaker, she helped her husband with his manufacturing business in Huntsville. She volunteered at the Logan County Humane Society and enjoyed cooking, reading, and being outside with nature, birds, and flowers. She loved being with her family and grandchildren.

Pastor Joel Yates will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 3rd at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where friends may call from 5 to 8 on Friday, April 2nd. Burial will be in the Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Thelma Pearl Reames

Thelma Reames 3-30-10 Thelma Pearl Reames, 88, of West Liberty, went home to be with the Lord at 1:20 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 2010 at her home. She was born in Clark County, Ohio on October 7, 1921 to the late Kensel and Mildred Lacey Dennis. On April 4, 1939, she married David S. Reames, and he preceded her in death on June 9, 1999. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Knox.

She was a very active member of the Logan County Senior Center in Bellefontaine, the Red Hat Society and spent much of her life supporting and assisting with church activities.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet (David) Fridenmaker and Judy (Steve) Danner, both of West Liberty; 6 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 2, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in West Liberty. Pastor Will Stackhouse will officiate with the assistance of Mrs. Reames’ granddaughter, Lynn Weatherby and grandson, David Danner. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 1st from 4-8 p.m. at the Kauffman-Eichholtz Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in West Liberty. Mildred L. “Millie” Dunlevy

Mildred Dunlevy 3-30-10 Mildred L. “Millie” Dunlevy, 83, of Russells Point, passed away at 6:05 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2010, at Heartland of Indian Lake, Lakeview, Ohio.

She was born in Dayton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Jacob and Grace Lane Wening.

On October 30, 1944 she married Carl W. Dunlevy and he preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 1995. Also preceding her in death were 2 sisters and 1 brother.

Survivors include a daughter, Sue Baker, Russells Point; sons, Richard W. (Rita) Dunlevy, Dayton, Oh and Bob W. (Paula) Dunlevy, Russells Point; 4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a life member of the Doyle R. Miller AMVETS Post #39 Auxiliary, Lakeview and Post #675 American Legion, Dayton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 1st in the Myron Van Horn Chapel of Sanford-Eichholtz Funeral Home, Lakeview, where visitation is two hours prior. Burial is in Huntsville Cemetery.

Herbert F. Forster Jr.

Herbert Forster Jr. 3-28-10 Herbert F. Forster Jr., 70, of Bellefontaine, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 26, 2010, at Riverside Methodist Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born in Saginaw, Michigan on September 25, 1939, the son of the late Herbert F. and Helen Beardsley Forster Sr.  On December 3, 1998, he married Janet L. Knotts at the First Christian Church and she survives in Bellefontaine. He is also survived by sons, Steve (Bonnie) Forster; Brent Moore; daughters, Cheryl (Chris) Harman, Kim (Dal) McDonald, all of Bellefontaine; twin sisters, Mary (Jim) Hamather of Harrisville, MI, Jane Gnotek of Saginaw, MI; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a brother, Conrad Forster and his first wife, Shirley Alice Sweeney Forster, on May 1986.

Herb worked for Super Foods as a supervisor and retired after 37 years of service. A 1957 graduate of St. Andrews Catholic High School, he attended Bay City Junior College, and during his 8th grade thru the 11th grade he attended the seminary. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the National Reserves. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, attended First Christian Church, and was a member of the Exchange Club.

He was an avid fisherman who loved to attend his grandchildren’s activities. He enjoyed reading, traveling, and getting together with his family, friends, and neighbors. Herb will be sadly missed by all those who knew him and loved him.

A. Edward Kindell

Edward Kindell 3-26-10 A. Edward Kindell, 79, of Bellefontaine, passed away Friday, March 26, 2010 at Mary Rutan Hospital following a short bout with cancer.

He was born in Bellefontaine, OH and was the youngest son of the late N.S. and Ruth Kindell. He also was preceded in death by an older brother, Walter.

Ed graduated from Bellefontaine High School in 1948 and attended Ohio Northern University for two years before serving in the Air Force during the Korean War. Upon returning from the service he worked for A.J. Miller Co. and then went on to receive his Masters Degree from Wright State University. He was instrumental in helping to establish Edison State Community College in Piqua, Ohio where he served as the first business manager. From there he became the purchasing manager for Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio until his retirement in 1993.

Ed also was preceded in death by his first wife, Daisy Quay and there are four surviving children from their marriage. Mike (Kathy) Kindell of Hilliard, OH; Tom (Mona) Kindell of Greenville, Ohio; Dave (Marnie) Kindell of Brookville, Ohio; and Beth Skidmore of Brookville, Ohio. They had 11 grandchildren, three step grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

In 1995, he married his loving and devoted wife, the former Betty Peters, and she survives along with a son, Chris (Kim) Peters of Liberty, Texas and one grandchild. Also surviving are two sisters, Ruth (Fred) Meredith of Bellefontaine, Ohio and Theda Bauer of Quitman, Georgia.

Ed’s love for life and his fellow man were boundless. His magnetic smile and cunning sense of humor was a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

Among his greatest joys was participating in family activities and communication with his many cherished friends but especially the members of the Class of 1948 which he served as the secretary-treasurer for many years. Ed was a member of the former Jaycees, Elks Lodge 132, American Legion and High Point Investment Association.

He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bellefontaine where a Celebration of Life will be conducted on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 11:00 am by Pastor Rob Fulton and Gene Marine. Calling hours will be held at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine from 5 to 8 on Monday, March 29, 2010.

Charles E. Robinson, 97, of West Liberty, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Logan Acres Care Center.

He was born on March 18, 1913 in Middleburg, OH to the late Ernest B. and Hazel Robinson. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth (Lauffer) Robinson, second wife, Nora Robinson, and his third wife, Eloise (Sutter) Robinson. A brother and sister, Bernard Robinson and Irene Myers, also precede him in death.

Surviving is a daughter, Jacque Stoner of West Liberty; stepdaughter, Billie Miller of West Liberty; sister, Beatrice Richardson of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Cathy Frick, Brandon, Keith and Darren Stoner and one great granddaughter, Emily Frick.

He worked for Dayton Power and Light for over 30 years and was a member of the First Christian Church in Bellefontaine.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, March 28th from 2 to 5 at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where Pastor F. Michael Valentine will conduct a funeral service at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 29th. Burial will follow in the Greenwood-Union Cemetery, DeGraff.

Betty J. Winebrenner Millington

Betty Winebrenner Millington 3-24-10 Betty J. Winebrenner Millington, 82, of Bellefontaine, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, departed this life on Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

She was born on May 22, 1927 in Kenton, OH to the late Ernest and Gwendolyn (Temple) Winebrenner.

On June 26, 1944 she married Matthew Mark Millington Sr. in Summersville, GA and he preceded her in death on February 3, 1993. She is also preceded in death by a son, Matthew “Skip” Mark Millington Jr., a daughter, Priscilla “Syl” Irene Miranda, a brother, Richard Winebrenner and a sister, Jean Crosnoe.

Betty is survived by two sons, Harry E. (Peggy) Millington and Patrick A. Millington and a granddaughter whom she raised, Dawn R. (Jeff) Duffy all of Bellefontaine; a brother, Jerry (Vicki) Payer of West Jefferson; grandchildren, Donald (Allcia) Miranda, David Miranda, Andrea and Mark Duffy, Kelly (Steve) Berry, Dana (Wes) Bright, all of Bellefontaine, and Brian Lattimer of Willow Spring, NC, 13 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves a beloved friend, Jerri McDonald of Bellefontaine, who was like a sister.

A homemaker, Betty raised and helped raise three generations of her family. She worked at Bulldog in the 60’s for 9 years and was a member of the Audubon Society. She took great pride and comfort being with her family and loved going to her grandchildren and great grandchildren sporting events. She also enjoyed traveling with her friend, Jerri, walking and bird watching.

Will Zell will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 27th at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where friends may call on Friday, March 26th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8. Burial will follow the service at the Claibourne Cemetery in Richwood, OH.

William E. Molton

William Molton 3-24-10 William E. Molton, 78, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Logan Acres Care Center.

He was born on March 1, 1932 to the late Thomas and Hazel (Bates) Molton. On February 2 1962, he married Marilyn Robinaugh in Bellefontaine and she survives along with two children, Patricia Lynn (David) Rostorfer, of Bellefontaine, and Steven Eric (Cynthia) Molton of Urbana; four grandchildren, Samuel and Jacob Molton of Urbana, and Marcy & Ryan Sebring of Bellefontaine, and two step grandsons, D.J. and Drew Rostorfer of Bellefontaine; daughter-in-law, Julie Molton of Bellefontaine; two sisters, Nancy (Charles) Beatty of Cave City, AR and Mae Roberts of Morehead, KY; a brother, John Molton of New Orleans, LA; brother-in-law, Larry Robinaugh of Bellefontaine; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a son, William Scott Molton, two sisters, Mina Kesecker and Nell Lerch, and a brother, Earl Molton.

Bill worked at Siemens as a night supervisor and retired after 42 years of service. An Army veteran, serving in the Korean War, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bellefontaine, the Masonic Grand Lodge, Grand Council Royal & Select Masons of Ohio, Logan Council No. 85, Scottish Rite (32 Club), Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, Lafayette Chapter No. 60, was Past President twice for the Bellefontaine Lions Club, member of the American Legion Post #173 and 29th Infantry Regiment Association. His family was the most important thing in his life.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 on Thursday, March 25th at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where a funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 am on Friday, March 26th with Pastor Ed Beale officiating. Burial will follow in the Bellefontaine Cemetery with military honors by the Logan County Veterans Honor Guard.

William Douglas “Doug” DeLaVergne

William Doug DeLaVergne 3-24-10 William Douglas “Doug” DeLaVergne, 55, of Lakeview, passed away Monday, March 22, 2010, at Heartland of Indian Lake, Lakeview, OH.

Doug was born on January 22, 1955 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Fairborn, OH to the late George Frazier I and Hazel Bernice Matz DeLaVergne. On December 24, 1979, he married Sumie Tomikawa in Yuma, AZ.

He is survived by his wife; Sumie, two children; Katherine Ann DeLaVergne Shields and George Frazier DeLaVergne II, both of Lakeview, a granddaughter; Keiko Aurora Shields, a brother; Paul DeLaVergne, Yellow Springs, OH, and many friends.

Doug was a 1973 graduate of Tecumseh High School. After high school, Doug moved to California, where he lived for ten years. While living there, he worked for TODD’s Pacific Shipyard and Carol Shelby Racing. He was formerly employed at Carter Steel and Buckeye Waste, both in Bellefontaine, OH and Henschen Axle in Jackson Center, OH. He was a member of the Studebaker Drivers Club for 26 years and received many medals. He was a foosball champion while living in California. He was an avid motorcycle and auto fan and mechanic, a boxing historian and very loyal Minnesota Vikings and OSU fan who enjoyed being around family and friends.

James F. “Jack” Young

James Jack Young 3-22-10 James F. “Jack” Young, 86, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Monday, March 22, 2010 at Heartland of Bellefontaine.

He was born on April 16, 1923 to Galion, OH to the late James E. and Grace (Slemmer) Young.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah (Goings) Walters Young whom he married on November 22, 2008 in Bellefontaine, OH. Also surviving are three sons, Michael Young and Christopher (Kathy) Young both of Findlay and Brian (Angie) Young of Maineville, OH; a daughter, Shelley Young of Mendon, OH; a brother, Fred (Helen) Young of Elizabethtown, KY; a sister, Shirley Earick of Niceville, FL; 14 stepchildren; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his former wife, Pauline Casey Young, a brother, William Young and a sister, Helen Grubbs.

He worked 42 years for the railroad and retired in 1983 from Conrail manager of the Signal Department for The States of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia.

He was member of the Satan Angels Drum and Bugle Corp from 1943 to 1960 and then helped with the Jr. Corp till 1965. He was a Scout Master of Post #109 and enjoyed football, especially Cincinnati Bengals. He also enjoyed woodworking, fishing and model railroads.

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24th from 5 to 8 at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where Tony Coy will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 25th. There will be one (1) hour of calling prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Huntsville Cemetery.

Mary E. Cummings, 75, of Bellefontaine passed away Friday, March 19, 2010 in the Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus.

She was born in Paintsville, KY on August 20, 1934, the daughter of the late Frank and Margarett (Hammond) Brugh. She is also preceded in death by her first husband, Leslie Ginn (1985), her second husband, Eugene Cummings (2004), a son, Mike Ginn (2003), and her two brothers, Raymond and Lacy Brugh.

She is survived by two sons, Gene (Angie) Ginn and Thomas (Doris) Ginn, both of Bellefontaine; three daughters, Margaret (Oral) Prater, of Bellefontaine, Janie (Gary) Payne of Bellefontaine, and Teresa (Jack) Watts of Lakeview; three brothers, Walter (Nancy) Brugh of Paintsville, KY, Robert (JoAnn) Brugh of Cable, OH, and William Brugh of Urbana; five sisters, Lucy (Luther) Smith of Springfield, Betty (Myron) Smith of Kennard, Delma (Robert) Bell of Delaware, OH, Barbara (Jon) Marquis of Springhills, and Patsy (Tim Gray) Hoffer of New Hampshire, 20 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a homemaker and later worked as a caregiver. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, Bellefontaine and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 in the Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine with Bro. A.W. Purdin officiating. Nancy A. Logan

Nancy A. Logan, 66, of Lakeview, passed away as a result from an auto accident on Wednesday, March 17, 2010.

She was born on December 29, 1943 in Logan County to the late Robert Lee and Eva Winnifred (Moore) Downing.

Surviving are five sons, Leonard II (Selina) of Cedar Rapids, IA, James (Jennifer) of Middleburg, Daniel (Liz) of Pearland, TX, Charles (Cheryl) of Lakeview, and Ralph Lee of Aiken, SC; two daughters, Tonya Ann (Scott) Titus of Ward, SC and Amanda Logan of Hope Mills, NC; two brothers, Robert Ray Downing of Logansville and David Downing of Bellefontaine; nine grandchildren, one great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. A brother, Jerry, precedes her in death.

Nancy worked for AVI Food Service at Honda Transmission Plant, Russells Point. She was Past President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Bellefontaine and enjoyed spending time with her family and especially watching them play sports.

Pastor Rob Kilgore will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 am on Monday, March 22nd at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where friends may call from 2 to 7 on Sunday, March 21st. Burial will be in the Zanesfield Cemetery.

Stephen T. Benner

Stephen T. Benner, 62, of Russells Point, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at his home.

He was born in Columbus on Sept. 11, 1947, a son of the late Fred E. and Mildred M. Box Benner.  He also was preceded in death by a son, Stephen T. Benner II, sister, Marsha Lynn Foreman and a nephew, Lee Randall Benner.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Rene (Jeffrey) Smith of Middletown; sister, Nancy E. (William) Gerhardt of Lebanon; twin brother, Stanley T. Benner of Hamilton; two grandchildren, Christopher L. Brock and Heather Nicole McMahon; nieces and nephews, Kimberly Keyser, Stanley R. Benner, James Walker and Jeffrey W. Gregory.

He was retired from Honda of America as a chauffeur.

Ronny Rapp 3-15-10 Ronny LeRoy Rapp, 64, of DeGraff, passed away while surrounded by his family Saturday, March 13, 2010, at OSU Medical Center, Columbus, OH.

He was born on March 12, 1946 in Kenton, OH to Marion and Mary Jane Wright Rapp, who survive in Bellefontaine. On March 19, 1976, he married the former Nancy Millisor at the Lewistown United Methodist, Lewistown, OH.

He is survived by his wife: Nancy, three children: Abbey (Thomas) Cotterman, Belle Center, OH, Jonn (Valarie) Rapp, Huntsville, OH, and Morgan (Jeremy) Kaser, Elida, OH, six grandchildren: Libby, Allix, and Kendall Cotterman, Annie and Aaron Rapp, and Owen Kaser, two step grandchildren: Shannon and Tommy Cotterman, a sister: Cindy (Steve) Dorsey, St. Paris, OH, two brothers: Richard (Faith) Rapp, Lima, OH, and Thomas Rapp, Bellefontaine, OH, sister-in-law: Cheryl Schrader, Lakeview, father-in-law: Norman Millisor, West Liberty, OH, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister: Lorna Rapp Brown, and mother-in-law: Carol Millisor.

He was a 1964 graduate of Indian Lake High School and attended OSU. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam. Ronn was a locomotive engineer for CF&E Railroad. He was a member of Lewistown United Methodist Church, Lewistown. Ronn was a lifelong support of Indian Lake Athletics who liked fishing, camping, sports of all kinds, and truly enjoyed coaching.

Reverend Bryan Meadows will conduct a memorial service at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Huntsville United Methodist Church, Huntsville, with visitation on Tuesday, March 16th from 4-8 p.m. at Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Per Mr. Rapp’s Wishes, his body was cremated.

George D. Rollins, Sr., 64, of Lakeview, passed away early Saturday morning, March 13, 2010, at Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine.

George was born on May 14, 1945 in Springfield, OH, to the late Jack Sr, and Lillian Williams Rollins. He was also preceded in death by two brothers: Roger and Jack Jr.

He is survived by five children: David Rollins, Urbana, OH, Joseph Rollins, Urbana, OH, Eva (Frank Hayhurst) Rollins, Lima, OH, George (Gina Smith) Rollins, Jr., Dayton, OH, and Amanda Rollins, Lakeview, six grandchildren: Ryan Rollins, Sean Rollins, Kendra Rollins, Cameron Rollins, Grant Rollins, and Darrion Rollins, three great grandchildren, three sisters: Alice Scott, Lima, OH, Ilene (Jim) Fay, Lima, and Mary Nuss, Indianapolis, IN, two brothers: Don Rollins, Lima, OH,  Randy Rollins, Lima, OH, a very special cousin: Jim Williams, and many nieces and nephews.

George was a retired truck driver and formerly owned and operated Fat Boy Towing. He enjoyed driving truck, and living life.

Goldia Mae Francis 3-15-10 Goldia Mae Francis, 89, of Russells Point, OH, passed away Saturday morning, March 13, 2010, at her home.

She was born on September 29, 1920, in Langley, KY, to the late Allen & Mary Ann Lafferty Ratliff. On May 24, 1941, she married E.L. Francis in Maytown, KY, and he preceded her in death after 54 years of marriage. She is also preceded in death by a son: Luther Gene Francis, grandson: Michael Halbert, 10 brothers and 2 sisters.

She is survived by nine children: Pat (Charlene) Francis, Russells Point, OH, Don (Crystal) Francis, Sidney, OH, James (Connie) Francis, Lewistown, OH, Edgle (Mary Lou) Francis, Sidney, OH, Martha Hemmer, Bellefontaine, OH, Mary Gullett, Russells Point, OH,  Linda (Rick) Kirkpatrick, Russell Point, OH, Susan (Fred) Vagedes, Coldwater, OH, and Sally (Jim) Page, Bellefontaine, OH, 24 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, four sisters: Myrtle Ratliff, Minnie, KY, Lula Bradley, Drift, KY, Sidney Ratliff, Drift, KY, and Shirley Amburgy, Louisa, KY, one brother: Edgel (Joan) Ratliff, Ypsilanti, MI, and many nieces and nephews.

Goldia was a graduate of Maytown High School, Maytown, KY. She was a member of Rumley Baptist Church, Anna, OH. She retired from Holloway Sportwear, Jackson Center, OH in 1982. She enjoyed spending her time with her children and grandchildren, crocheting and reading.

Pastor Greg Haisley will conduct funeral services at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview with visitation from 4-7 p.m. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 19, 2010 in Bethel Cemetery, Tazwell, TN.

William B. “Billy” Bailey III

William B. “Billy” Bailey III, 43, of West Mansfield, formerly of Urbana, passed away in his residence. He was born October 21, 1966, in Urbana, a son of William B. and Linda (McKee) Bailey, Jr.

Survivors include his mother of Urbana, sister Tami Ream and her husband Bruce of Urbana; brothers Brian Bailey of Chillicothe, Chris Bailey and his wife Karen of Bellefontaine, nieces Aubrey, Kimi, Megan and Cori, nephews Brice, Eric, and Mason. He has several aunts and uncles, and many cousins, two great nieces and many special friends, including the Detrick Family, the Hayes Family, Matt Abbott, and Paula Wilcoxon all of West Mansfield.

He was preceded in death by his father William B. Bailey, Jr, March 16, 1996 ; paternal grandparents, William B. Bailey, Sr. and Phyllis Solberg; maternal grandparents, Thelma and Leslie McKee; brother Douglas “Duke” Bailey, July 30, 2003.

Billy was a 1985 graduate of Urbana High School. He was a self-employed carpenter, and a volunteer at the Fish & Game Conservation Club. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid Nascar fan, especially Jeff Gordon.

The family will receive friends between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2010 in the Walter & Smith Funeral Home, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, where the services will be held at 6:30 P.M. with Rev Jesse Walters officiating.

Johnnie Junior Smith

Johnnie Junior Smith 3-12-10 Johnnie Junior Smith, 83, of West Liberty, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010 at his home.

He was born on August 19, 1926, in Scioto County, Ohio, a son of James F. and Rosa B. (Gillium) Smith who preceded him in death. Family members also previously passed were three brothers; David, George and William, a sister Stella Beezler, and a granddaughter, Stacy McCullough.

Johnnie is survived by his wife of 61 years, having married Arlene E. (Mefford) in Greenup, Kentucky on April 29, 1948. Also surviving are three sisters, Clara Brown of Bellefontaine, Betty Wilcoxon of DeGraff, and Ruth Ross of Sidney; three sons, David J., Gary F. (Jayne), and Duane A. (Jackie); and a daughter, Carolyn M. (Bill) Roberts, all of West Liberty. Johnnie and Arlene have ten grandchildren; Melissa Williams, Lisa Smith, Tiann Harner, Angela Smith, Jessica Smith, Anthony Smith, Tyson Roberts, Joshua Smith, Tyler Smith and Austin Smith. They also have eleven great-grandchildren.

Johnnie served in the Army between February 22, 1945 and September 18, 1947, and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1080 in Bellefontaine. He retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base in 1988.

Johnnie was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved to work on family and neighbor’s cars, trucks and tractors. A devoted husband, father, brother and “grandpa”, he will be remembered for his generosity, love of life and love of family.

The family will welcome friends and neighbors at Kauffman-Eichholtz Funeral Home in West Liberty between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 15, 2010. Services will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor John Bowman and Pastor Richard Thompson officiating. A committal service with military honors by the Logan County Honor Guard will immediately follow at the Highland Memorial Cemetery in West Liberty.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Johnnie’s name to the West Liberty Emergency Medical Service and/or the Church of Christ in Christian Union (New Beginnings), Bellefontaine, Ohio.

Ethel “Sue” Ragland

Ethel Ragland 3-10-10 Ethel “Sue” Ragland, 93, of Huntsville, passed away at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine.

She was born in Waynesfield on August 22, 1916, a daughter of the late Samuel Smith and Nellie Beatrice Siegle Morris.

She also was preceded in death by sons, David and Charles, and a granddaughter, Melonie, and 10 brothers and sisters.

On July 14, 1934 she married James S. Ragland and he preceded her in death on September 11, 2002.

Survivors include daughters, Claudia (William) Shellenbarger, Perrysburg, Jill (Carl) Fulmer, Walland, Tennessee and Pandora (Robert) Plikerd, Bellefontaine; sons, Samuel (Janice) Ragland and Matt Ragland both of Bellefontaine; 12 grandchildren; 2 step-granddaughters; 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Beulah Zimmerman, Greenville, and a dear friend, Miriam Fulmer of Huntsville.

She was always at home cooking and caring for her children.

Rev. Russell D. Williams officiates a funeral at 2 p.m. Friday in the Myron Van Horn Chapel of Sanford-Eichholtz Funeral Home, Lakeview, where visitation is from 12 – 2 p.m. Burial is in Walnut Hill Cemetery.

Ruth Ann Tallman 3-8-10 Ruth Ann Tallman, 73, of Huntsville, passed away Sunday morning, March 7, 2010 at her home.

She was born on January 21, 1937 in Russells Point, OH to the late Earl & Mary Mattox Thompson. She married Garth W. Tallman on September 5, 1957 in Huntsville, OH, and he died November 16, 2004.

She is survived by two children: Steve (Paula) Norviel, Bellefontaine, and Trish (Joe) Finnerty, Holt, MI, five grandchildren: Sarah Norviel, Dale Norviel, Andrea (Brad) Leonard, Brendan Finnerty, and Katie Finnerty, two great grandchildren: Max Montoney and Brody Leonard, four sisters: Patsy (Jay) Richardson, Huntsville, Virginia (Jim) Harpst, Huntsville, Bernie (Gerald) Wren, DeGraff, and Betty Thompson, St. Petersburg, FL, two brothers: Fred (Linda) Thompson, Huntsville, and Bob Thompson, Huntsville, and many special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ruth Ann retired as a dietary aide after 37 years from Mary Rutan Hospital. She was a member of Amvets 39 Line Dancers and Curves. She enjoyed line dancing, fishing, and traveling.

Louise Katherine "Betsy" Prater

Louise Prater 3-8-10 Louise Katherine "Betsy" Prater, 86, of DeGraff, died at 4:23 PM Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine.

She was born in Dayton on November 7, 1923, a daughter of the late Albert G. and Louise B. Hofmann Bussinger. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Bussinger; a brother-in-law, Charles Forsthoff; and brother and sister-in-law, Don & Mozelle Strayer.

On May 29, 1948, she married Jack M Prater in Dayton and he survives, along with son, Tom (Vicki) Prater of DeGraff; daughters, Kathy (Gary) McCulla of West Liberty; Joanne (Greg) Campbell of Quincy; Connie (Allen) Yutzy of Plain City; Linda (Steve) Brautigam of Quincy; Terry Prater of DeGraff; Sharon (Darrell) Heaberlin of DeGraff; Peg (Mike) Cook of West Liberty, and Jackie Prater of DeGraff; two brothers, George (Sarah) Bussinger of Centerville, and Robert (Wendy) Bussinger of California; two sisters-in-law, Adlena Bussinger and Ann Forsthoff both of Dayton; eleven grandchildren 5 step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and twelve step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews.

In 1941 she graduated from Julienne High School in Dayton, she was a member of St Patrick’s Catholic Church, and Miami Grange #2158. Betsy was a homemaker, farmer’s wife and long time poll worker. Prior to marriage she was a civilian worker at Wright-Patterson Field.

The Rev. Patrick L Sheridan officiates a mass at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2010 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Bellefontaine. Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home, DeGraff. Burial is in the Philadelphia Cemetery, Bellefontaine.

Clarence “Slim” N. Springer

Clarence Springer 3-8-10 Clarence “Slim” N. Springer, 90, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Sunday, March 7th at his residence.

He was born in Waynoka, OK on August 16, 1919 to the late Edward P. and Ella (Sackett) Springer.

On August 26, 1945 he married Barbara McCormick in Covington, KY and she survives along with two daughters, Karen (Ralph) Huntzinger of Columbus and Terry Sickles of Louisville, KY; two brothers, James (Judy) Springer of Bartlesville, OK and Eugene (Anita) Springer of Pawhuska, OK; two sisters, Leona Cornejo of Amarillo, TX and Dorothy Sprouse of Bartlesville, OK; six grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death is an infant son, Thomas Dale Springer; brothers, Dewell and Paul Springer; and a sister, Rosemary Miller.

Clarence was a group leader at D.A.B. and retired in 1983 after 28 years of service. Later he worked for Cherokee Hills Golf Course.

A WWII Army veteran, he was a member of the Huntsville Presbyterian Church, a member of the American Legion Post #173, and formerly the Hi-Point See-Saw’s. He enjoyed bowling, golf and playing cards.

Pastor Karen Cassedy and Rev. Russell D. Williams will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 11th at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine where friends may call from 4 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, March 10th. Burial will be in the Huntsville Cemetery with military honors by the Logan County Veterans Honor Guard.

Carroll B. Allen

Carroll Allen 3-5-10 Carroll B. Allen, 83, of Huntsville, Ohio, died peacefully Thursday night, March 4, 2010 at his home.

He was born March 1, 1927, in Lakeview, Ohio, a son of the late J. Byron and Genevieve Norviel Allen. He was also preceded in death by his brother, C. Donald Allen.

On December 16, 1950, he married Patricia Ann Hodies and she survives. He is also survived by two daughters: Beckey Allen and Carol (Al) Souza, both of Huntsville, five grandchildren: Jason (Kristen) Scasny and Keith (Mandy) Scasny, both of Perrysburg, OH, Jenna (Fred) Brannon of Kirtland, OH, Luke (Rachel) Scasny, of Cincinnati, OH, and Christa (Cory) Thornton, of San Diego, CA, and three great grandchildren: Asia Brannon and Olivia and Aiden Scasny.

He was devoted to his entire family and his beloved dogs were his constant companions, especially Missy. Carroll enjoyed golfing and fishing. He enjoyed every summer in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with his many dear friends there.

As a World War II Navy veteran, he proudly served in the South Pacific on the LST 755 and was honorable discharged. He was employed by Allen’s Garage in Lakeview, 25 years at Airstream in Jackson Center, and 13.5 years at KT Corporation in Shelbyville, IN.

He was a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the American Legion, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Lion’s Club, and the Ohio LST Amphiles Association. He was president of the Versailles, Ohio Development Association. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Lakeview Fire Department and its Fire Chief for seven years. He served on the school board for Stokes Local Schools.

Carroll was a Civil War buff and traveled to many famous war sites. He was a member of the Civil War Preservation Trust.

He will be honored during a memorial service at Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview, officiated by Reverend Bryan Meadows at 1:00 p.m., March 13, 2010, with visitation two hours prior to services.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in his name to Universal Home Health and Hospice Care, 701 South Main Street, Bellefontaine, OH 43311.

Virgil Elroy Marine

Virgil Marine 3-5-10 Virgil Elroy Marine, 91, passed away on Friday, March 5th, 2010 at his home in Zanesfield, OH. He was born on January 26, 1919 in West Liberty, OH. The son of Arthur and Celesta Belle (King) Marine, he was married to Glendora Corwin on March 23, 1941, and she preceded him in death in 1994. His son, Michael, and daughter, Barbara Mabry was with him at his passing.

Other surviving family members include brothers, James and Floyd Marine, sister, Dorothy Humble; grandsons, Daniel, Dale, David, and Duane Mabry, and Matthew Marine; and seven great grandchildren.

Virgil attended West Liberty schools and Urbana Junior College before entering the Navy during WWII. He became a farmer and then postmaster in Zanesfield from which he retired in 1979. He and Glendora spent the first part of their retirement years in Florida during the winter returning to Ohio in the summer where he would grow a large garden for family and friends. He was always known for his willingness to help others and his gregarious nature. The world is a better place because he was here.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Monday, March 8th at the Kauffman-Eichholtz Funeral Home in West Liberty where friends may call from 3 to 6 on Sunday, March 7th. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty.

Robert Lee Skeen

Robert Lee Skeen, 70, of Bellefontaine, died at 7:39 PM Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Riverside Hospital, Columbus.

A son of the late Thomas Russell and Helen Margaret Kirkpatrick Skeen, he was born on May 28, 1939, in Bellefontaine. He was also preceded in death by a son Eurotis Russell Skeen.

On February 14, 1974, he married the former Betty LeFever in Russells Point and she survives, along with two daughters, Tammi Clerkin of New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Penny (Randy) Bechtel of Bellefontaine; two sons, Donald Lee (Vivian) Clevenger and John R. (Dawn) Skeen, both of Alabama; a brother, Jim (Karen) Skeen of Bellefontaine; two sisters, Judith (Donn) Patton of Belle Center and Peggy (Bill) LeFever of Huntsville; 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

The 1957 graduate of Lewistown High School was an Air Force Veteran, and member of the Hi-Point See Saws Square Dance Club. He also volunteered at Mary Rutan Hospital. He was an OTR driver and retired from Roadway Express.

He enjoyed his grandchildren and traveling.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home, DeGraff, with Rev. A.W. Purdin officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 5, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is in the Fairview Cemetery, Mutual.
