Hormann signs with Liberty University (Audio and picture included)

3/13/2010

Alexa Hormann signs with Liberty University from 3-12-10 West Liberty-Salem soccer standout Alexa Hormann signed a Division I letter of intent with Liberty University Friday morning.

The senior keeper was joined by her family, coaches, staff members, and students at a ceremony in the high school library.

(Pictured: Alexa Hormann signs with Liberty University Friday. Looking on, clockwise from the lower left, are her mother Peggy Hormann, Grace Chapel Youth Pastor Mike Wilson, assistant coach Jimmy Hoffman, and her father Todd Hormann.)

The Second Team All-Ohio selection has been the cornerstone of the Lady Tigers program the last four years.

West Liberty-Salem has only had girls soccer for six years and many of the players have not played much youth soccer.

That inexperience forced Hormann to face 20-40 shots per game.

The 5’10” goalie answered the call and kept WLS in most games.

The ‘09 season was the best campaign in school history as the Tigers went 9-6-1.

Alexa recorded 105 saves and only allowed 19 goals last season.

Coaches Andy Cotrell and Jimmy Hoffman said Hormann’s athletic ability and work ethic will help her shine at the next level.

Hormann said playing Division I soccer has been a goal for many years.

She chose Liberty over Penn State and Ohio State.

Alexa was invited to Penn State as a preferred walk-on, but the Liberty coaching staff and the school’s commitment to Christ won her over.

Liberty competes in the Big South Conference. The Lady Flames went 9-7-3 last season.

Hormann, who plans on majoring in sports management with a minor in missions, spoke with Bill Tipple about her choice and more.

Listen to the complete interview.

Listen to WLS assistant coach Jimmy Hoffman reflect on the signing.

Hormann is the third West Liberty-Salem student-athlete to recently sign a Division I letter of intent.

Last year, discus star Nate Bratka signed with the Air Force Academy.

Senior shortstop Abbey Ledford signed with Kent State in November.

3/13/2010

Louie Vito with American Flag from 11-09 Bellefontaine native Louie Vito (pictured) rode to a Bronze Medal in the superpipe finals at the inaugural Winter X Games Europe Friday afternoon in Tignes, France.

The Olympian put down the first-ever triple double in a competition – that’s back-to-back-to-back double cork 1080s.

The judges rewarded Louie with a score of 92.33 for his first X Games medal.

Switzerland’s Iouri Podlatchikov (iPod) took home the gold by throwing down a frontside double cork, Cab 7, and then the trick that he learned a week ago – the double McTwist 12 (Shaun White’s trick) in the middle of his run. He finished with a tail grab 10 and front 7.

iPod’s score of 98 is the highest in Winter X Games history.

France’s Mathieu Crepel, who finished 10th at the Olympics last month, delivered a strong run to earn the silver.

The hometown favorite threw a frontside double cork, frontside 12, and an alley oop rodeo.

Crepel’s score was a 95.

More than 20,000 fans attended the finals.

Kauffman, who’s a three-year starter, said he knew Shawnee State was the right choice after a recent visit.

Kauffman really liked the campus and second-year head coach Ted Tom.

The Bears were impressed with Kauffman’s hands as a hitter.

Brunswick said the senior middle infielder’s baseball instincts jump out to college coaches.

Kauffman had a team-best .423 average last spring. He was named All League, All District, and All Logan County.

He plans on majoring in education at the NAIA school.

Josh spoke with Bill Tipple after the signing.

Listen to Kauffman discuss his choice, why he decided to play college baseball, what Shawnee State likes about him, what he expects at the next level, and how Coach Brunswick helped.

Kauffman also considered Lake Erie College, Urbana University, and the University of Charleston (West Virginia).

Listen to Coach Brunswick react to the signing, discuss Josh's skill set, reflect on the selection of Shawnee State, describe the Bears program, and talk about Kauffman's intangibles.

Kauffman is the second Chieftain senior to sign a letter of intent.
