Citing danger to the national economy, the Bush administration approved an emergency bailout of the U.S. auto industry Friday, offering $17.4 billion in rescue loans in exchange for concessions from the deeply troubled carmakers and their workers.
The government will have the option of becoming a stockholder in the companies, much as it has with major banks, in effect partially nationalizing the industry.
At the same time, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said Congress should release the second $350 billion from the financial rescue fund that it approved in October to bail out huge financial institutions. Tapping the fund for the auto industry basically exhausts the first half of the $700 billion total, he said. (Audio interviews included.)

Bellefontaine leaders have finally pledged their support to the renovation project at the Holland Theatre.
During a special council meeting Friday night, city council adopted an ordinance by a 5-2 vote.
The legislation calls for the city to contribute $80,000 to the heating and cooling project at the Holland.
Earlier this year, the Logan County Commissioners earmarked $100,000 for the project.
The city and county grants nearly match a federal grant of $194,000.
The entire project will cost about $380,000.

Nicole Fawcett and Penn State head coach Russ Rose hold the National Player of the Year Award Friday night.
Former Benjamin Logan volleyball great Nicole Fawcett has received another prestigious award.
The Penn State senior outside hitter was named the 2008 American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I National Player of the Year during a banquet in Omaha, Nebraska Friday night.
"Thank you so much to the AVCA for this honor," remarked Fawcett, who claims the second-ever award for the Nittany Lions, joining Lauren Cacciamani, who shared the 1999 award with Stanford's Kerri Walsh. "Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I would receive this award. With the caliber of athletes here, this is the best compliment I could ever receive. I know this is truly Penn State's honor. Every day we come and work hard, and we are a family."
