This year's winners include Benjamin Logan High School math teacher Luann Schmitmeyer, Benjamin Logan first grade teacher Kim Smith, and Indian Lake High School history teacher Brian Sutton. The Rotary Club will host the 16th Annual Excellence in Teaching awards luncheon Monday, April 21st at noon at the Friendly Senior Center. (Pictures included.) You can hear the program live on 1390 WBLL. Rotarians say the program allows the club to give back to those who give so much to us. The club says our educators are providing for our future, and it is an honor to be able to recognize them for their hard work and accomplishments. Here are quotes from the teachers and their nominators. Quote from Luann Schmitmeyer -Benjamin Logan High School "I never ask the students to work harder than I push myself. I model the work ethic I want from my students. I believe that all students can learn math and don't let them quit."
Mrs. Schmitmeyer was nominated by Colleague and Parent, Rose Overturf "To teach is to touch a life forever" is a quote that describes Mrs. Luann Schmitmeyer. Her caring attitude and her constant giving to her students makes her an excellent nominee for this award.
Kim Smith
Quote from Kim Smith- Benjamin Logan Elementary School "Teaching is about making a dent in the world so that the world is different because you've practiced your craft. Knowing clearly what kind of dent you want to make in the world means you must continually ask yourself the most fundamental evaluative question of all- what effect am I having on student's learning?"
Mrs. Smith was nominated by Student, Dominic Nibert "She does whatever she can to make me feel like I am the smartest kid in the world and to make me feel very happy about myself. She will take extra time with me to help me understand anyway she can."
"I have been fortunate enough to travel around the world and live among people from many cultures. I have seen that people can get along and that no matter how bad life can get, we are not alone and we can succeed. I teach kids that they don't need to get through the tough times alone."
Mr. Sutton was nominated by Student, Logan Herford
Mr. Sutton has had a great impact on my life. Not only is this teacher a great teacher, he has also made me realize that I can be the best I can be." |
