Benjamin Logan High School math teacher Luann Schmitmeyer, Benjamin Logan first grade teacher Kim Smith, and Indian Lake High School history teacher Brian Sutton are this year's recipients. They were honored in front of their families, peers, school administrators, and past award winners. (Audio interviews included.)
An administrator spoke on behalf of each recipient. Schmitmeyer was introduced by Principal Scott Albert, Smith was introduced by Principal Shari Rice, and Sutton was introduced by Principal Denny Shaner. Each school official gave examples of how this year's recipients deliver meaningful curriculum. All three were recognized for teaching students life lessons everyday. Schmitmeyer was praised for relating math to everyone, Smith was noted for caring deeply for every first grader she teaches, and Sutton was recognized for making his history lessons interesting and relevant. Here are quotes from the teachers and their nominators. Quote from Luann Schmitmeyer -Benjamin Logan High School "I never ask the students to work harder than I push myself. I model the work ethic I want from my students. I believe that all students can learn math and don't let them quit."
Mrs. Schmitmeyer was nominated by Colleague and Parent, Rose Overturf "To teach is to touch a life forever" is a quote that describes Mrs. Luann Schmitmeyer. Her caring attitude and her constant giving to her students makes her an excellent nominee for this award. Quote from Kim Smith- Benjamin Logan Elementary School "Teaching is about making a dent in the world so that the world is different because you've practiced your craft. Knowing clearly what kind of dent you want to make in the world means you must continually ask yourself the most fundamental evaluative question of all- what effect am I having on student's learning?"
Mrs. Smith was nominated by Student, Dominic Nibert "She does whatever she can to make me feel like I am the smartest kid in the world and to make me feel very happy about myself. She will take extra time with me to help me understand anyway she can." Quote from Brian Sutton- Indian Lake High School "I have been fortunate enough to travel around the world and live among people from many cultures. I have seen that people can get along and that no matter how bad life can get, we are not alone and we can succeed. I teach kids that they don't need to get through the tough times alone."
Mr. Sutton was nominated by Student, Logan Herford
Mr. Sutton has had a great impact on my life. Not only is this teacher a great teacher, he has also made me realize that I can be the best I can be." Each winner spoke with Bill Tipple after the ceremony. Listen to Luann Schmitmeyer's comments. Hear Kim Smith reflect on winning the award. Rotarians put several months of work into the program. First, nominations are accepted each fall and then the winners are selected the following spring. Rotarians say the program allows the club to give back to those who give so much to us. The club says our educators are providing for our future, and it is an honor to be able to recognize them for their hard work and accomplishments. Each recipient was presented with an engraved desk/pen set with a globe and a $100 Chamber Choice Certificate. The event was carried live on 1390 WBLL. WPKO & WBLL General Manager Lou Vito was the emcee.
