Guest Chinese teacher Haihong Jiang shares Mandarin Language program with the Board
Highlighting the Benjamin Logan Board of Education meeting held Monday evening was a presentation of the accomplishments of the Chinese Language Program. The Mandarin class is currently being taught by guest Chinese Teacher Haihong Jiang. The success of the program was showcased by some of the students at Monday's meeting. (Video interviews included.) Shari Rice, Elementary Principal, and Sally Stolly, Coordinator of Gifted Services & Distance Learning, recently attended the National Chinese Language Conference in Washington D.C. Under their guidance and along with Emmy Davis-Smith, Curriculum Coordinator, the Benjamin Logan Elementary School is participating in Ohio's federally funded K-4 pilot Mandarin curriculum program for the 07-08 school year and the board also approved 08-09 participation. Students currently receive 30 minutes of weekly instruction in 10 topics. Watch Haihong Jiang share a conversation with students in Chinese. In other Board news the Financial Report was approved including several appropriation increases. The Finance Committee will meet on Wednesday at 3:30 in the Central Office Building. Last quarter's financial reports and the five-year forecast will be discussed. In Superintendent Stan Mounts' report, the board approved contract renewals for the 08-09 school year along with supplemental contracts. Two retirements were also approved for Don Mobley and Marion Keith Henry. The board approved 08 Summer Camps and Clinics and contracts with Logan County Family and Children First Council, Bellefontaine Physical Therapy, and Ohio State University for student teachers. Also approved were the FFA trip to Washington D.C. and donations including four American flags from the Wood-Rosebrook American Legion in East Liberty and the American Flag for the middle school that was flown on a B-1Bomber over Afghanistan and a KC-135 Tanker over Iraq. Air Force Sgt. Jason Penwell facilitated the donation of the flag. In the maintenance report, discussion was heard for expansion of the parking lot and placement has been made of the new bleachers. The board's next meeting is scheduled for May 19th. |
