John McConnell
The Columbus Blue Jackets' majority owner John McConnell has died. He was 84.

The club and the company he started say McConnell died Friday. No further details were immediately released.

McConnell was a steel magnate who led a group of investors to bring the National Hockey League to Columbus. The Blue Jackets played their first game in 2000.

He was also an early investor in Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew franchise and a former minority owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

McConnell was the founder of Worthington Industries, a $3 billion-a-year steel processing company.

He was also inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in 2001.

McConnell touched Central Ohio in many ways. Some of his accomplishments include:

Created the McConnell Heart and Health Center at Riverside Hospital in Columbus

Helped reinstitute the Veterans Day parade in Columbus

Assisted with the creation of the Columbus Zoo’s gorilla habitat

Honorary chair for Junior Achievement Exchange City of Central Ohio’s Capital Campaign

Recipient of the Financial World Magazine Outstanding CEO of the Year award

Recipient of the National Football Foundation Gold Medal Award
