Humane Society Serving Logan County Board
The Humane Society Serving Logan County held their annual membership meeting Wednesday evening. After board introductions, President Allison Holloway presented animal stats for 2007. Holloway announced a 60% survival rate for canines with 33% being adopted from the shelter. However, that did leave approximately 40% of shelter canines being euthanized. That will all change in 2008. (Video interview included.) The shelter is currently at capacity for felines, where in 2007 there was a 50% survival rate; including 17% being adopted by PetsMart. In financial news, the board announced that 74% of their income came from Bingo fundraisers, while 67% of their costs were also associated with the Bingo fundraisers. In additional fundraising, the board raised $8,000 in 2007 from the Woof Walk and $17,000 in Wags to Riches. New in 2007 at the shelter was the appointment in November of Lauri Plummer as Director. Plummer has brought forth changes including extended hours during the week until 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday until 3:00 p.m. Also, the Spay and Neuter Clinics are being held one to four times a month. The board's five-year goal is to decrease strays by half by managing the population with future spay and neuter clinics. Board member Tim Tillman currently performs 1000 surgeries annually. The board was proud to announce their certification into PetsMart's Rescue Wagon. Trucks will come to the shelter starting once a month to take up to 40 healthy adoptable canines to receiving shelters, inwhich they will be adopted in as few as 72 hours. This new program will eliminate the need for euthanasia on healthy canines. Watch Allison Holloway explain "Rescue Wagon." Holloway announced five openings on the board along with volunteer opportunities, from fundraising to dog walking.
