The State Highway Patrol responded to a plane crash at the Bellefontaine Regional Airport just before seven o'clock Sunday night.

Troopers report that Frank Slemmons, 63, of Zanesfield crashed while attempting to land his eastbound Cessna aircraft.

Authorities say the plane touched down twice and then went off the left side of the runway and through a fence on the north edge of the airport.

Slemmons and his wife, Oria Slemmons, 64, were the only occupants. (Audio interviews included.)

They were not injured.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was notified and they are still investigating the accident.

The patrol was assisted by Bellefontaine Fire and EMS, the Bellefontaine Police Department, and airport manager Steve Buchenroth.

News Director Bill Tipple spoke with Mr. Buchenroth about the accident.

Listen to Steve explain what led to the crash.

This is the third minor accident since the airport opened in '01.

Buchenroth said one of the accidents happened during take off and the other two were during landing.

Hear him discuss what a pilot must consider each time they land.

Sunday's crash caused the airport to close for just over three hours.
