Six Logan County Envirothon teams from Bellefontaine, Indian Lake, and Riverside competed at the Area IV Envirothon competition yesterday.

The Riverside High School team of Dylan Atterholt, Daniel Baughman, Kevin Beatty, Jacob Hurley, and Jacob Minnich won the event. The first place finish qualifies the team to advance to the State Envirothon Competition held at Urbana University June 8th-10th.

The competition was held at Camp Kern in Lebanon. 70 teams from 18 counties met for the annual Envirothon.

The students were tested on their environmental knowledge in five areas, answering questions on wildlife management, forestry, soils, aquatic ecology, and a current environmental issue. The current environmental issue this year was Recreational Impacts on Natural Resources.

The Riverside team of Amanda Ark, Lauren Krisher, Megan McGowen, Breanna Schroeder, and Amber Watkins finished 29th.

The top four teams from the event advance to the Ohio Envirothon, where they will compete with top teams from the other four areas in the state.

A total of 20 teams will compete at the Ohio Envirothon competition. The winning team from the Ohio Envirothon then advances to the Canon Envirothon, which will be held in Arizona this year.  More than 1,700 students participate in the five Ohio Area Envirothons, and 50 teams across the U.S. and Canada will compete in the 2008 Canon Envirothon. Each team consists of five students.  An adult supervisor must accompany the team, but is not permitted to assist the team during competition.

The Riverside Envirothon advisors are Rod Yoder and Jody Carney.

The Riverside teams would like to thank Barb Kuck and the Logan Soil and Water Conservation District for their support and help throughout the school year. They would also like to thank Pheasants Forever for sponsoring all of the Logan County Envirothon teams.
