More than 46 countries honor mothers with a special day, but not all celebrate on the same day.  Several people throughout history have been linked to the original Mother's Day celebration, but one name continues to stand out as the person responsible for the United States declaring Mother's Day as a National Holiday.

Anna Jarvis, who's mother Mrs. Anna M. Jarvis, had been instrumental in developing “Mothers Friendship Day” which was part of the healing process of the Civil War. In honor of her mother, Miss Jarvis wanted to set aside a day to honor all mothers, living and dead. (Video interviews included.)

In 1907, Miss Anna began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. She persuaded her mother’s church in Grafton, W.Va., to celebrate Mother’s Day on the second anniversary of her mother’s death, the second Sunday of May. By the next year, Mother’s Day was also celebrated in her own city of Philadelphia.

Miss Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, evangelists, businessmen, and politicians in their crusade to establish a national Mother’s Day.

A proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day was signed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson on May 14, 1914.

A few local ladies attending Christ Our King Church in Bellefontaine shared their thoughts on Mother's Day.

Watch Jamie Kreutzer as she tells of a surprise adoption of her 5th child.

Watch Christal Davis explain her surprise pregnancy after being told she could not have children.

Christ Our King Church is located at 1325 County Road 9, Bellefontaine and holds a morning worship service at ten o'clock each Sunday.

Listen to WPKO this Sunday to hear Messages to Mom as listeners tell their mom happy Mother's Day. You can hear Messages to Mom throughout the day on Sunday from Noon-6:00 on 98.3 WPKO.
