First on the agenda was discussion concerning an Athletic/Activities Director position. The board had previously moved the Athletic Director, Chuck Bertschman, to a teaching position in order to cut costs to the district. The board was in agreement to create a "supplemental" Athletic Director position. A supplemental position will be added responsibilities assumed by an existing position. The board then heard from Bill Pizzino, who has been directing the inspections for the building maintenance concerns. Mr. Pizzino informed the board that contractors will be onsite starting Monday to try and find out why some areas of the building have experienced leaks. It was noted that similar problems have occurred at other schools and are not isolated to Riverside. Any corrective maintenance should be completed by August. After discussion, the board then approved to move forward to hire an advanced math teacher. Superintendent Bernie Pachmayer presented to the board an opportunity to purchase a standing unit (mobile preschool classroom) for a cost of $1 from the Logan County Educational Service Center (ESC). The building was recently used at the Lakeview Elementary. The Council on Rural Services would absorb any costs associated with the transportation, set up, and renovation of the unit. The new classroom would be ready in October. Board President Jim Cox and board member Mrs. Harshbarger agreed to inspect the unit as the board continues their pursuit to have an available classroom for preschool students located at the school. Finally, the board acknowledged some of the cutbacks that have been implemented or will soon be implemented, including: - Reduction for coordination of Health Insurance - Looping 5th and 6th grades - Elimination of the Gifted Coordinator - Pay to participate increased to $65 for High School - Elimination of a school bus driver position - Paperless checks - Counters on copy machines - HVAC sytems on a cycle - Lighting reduced when appropriate - Mandatory computer shutdowns - Custodial Department, Professional Development and Adjunct Professor responsibilites assumed by Superintendent Pachmayer - Issuance of Parking passes - Lunch prices increased $ .25 The next regular Riverside Board of Education meeting will be held Thursday, June 26th at 7:00 p.m. |
