A father and son vied for the title of Best of Show.

There were nine entries in this fifth year of competition.

The cook-off has three categories, mild, spicy and unique.

The chili creators used different types of meats, beans, and peppers.

The judges looked at appearance, flavor, and texture.

Logan County Family Court Judge Michael Brady and Logan County Probate Court Judge Douglas Chamberlain and his wife Patty were the judges this year.

Judge Brady wiped his brow as he tasted the spicy entries.

The winners were:

Mild

Grand Champion- Ann Fischer

Reserve- Barb Metz

Spicy

Grand Champion and Best of Show-Richard Zell

Reserve- Denise Hurley

Unique

Grand Champion- Cody Zell

Reserve- Julie Miller

Cody Zell, who won in the unique category, presented chili that contained many different types of peppers, pineapple, and butterscotch chips.

"I thought of the butterscotch chips yesterday while I was in the shower," Cody said.

Cody's father, Richard said, "I thought I was in trouble when I heard the ingredients that Cody was using."

Richard won the Grand Champion ribbon for his spicy entry.  "When you make a judge cough, you know you've done well," Zell said.

Cody said he plans to win Best of Show next year.
