One big item of discussion for board members was approving the five-year, 1.5 mill permanent improvement levy, which will appear on the November ballot. The board stressed that this was not an additional tax being placed on citizens, but rather approving the same 11 cents per day community members are already being asked to pay. (Audio interview included.) The property tax, if passed, will cover many costs including a new school bus for the district. Listen to Superintendent Linda Sparks discuss why the levy is needed. In other board action, four resignations of West Liberty-Salem employees were accepted. Jessica Yocom resigned as middle school volleyball coach, Bryan Bossee resigned as a half-time phys ed and health teacher, Kara Schneider resigned as high school science teacher, varsity girls cross country coach and NHS advisor, and guidance counselor Robin Fisher is leaving the district. Technology was also discussed at Monday night's meeting. The West Liberty-Salem school district will be seeing a "face-lift" of sorts. Uses of technology in the district can expect work on the server, a more user-friendly website, and new machines. The next regular board meeting will be August 11th at 7:00 p.m. There will be a special meeting of the West Liberty-Salem Board of Education to discuss finance issues on August 21st at 7:30 p.m. |
