village_of_russells_point_mtg_7-21-08.jpgThe use of golf carts within the village became a hot topic at the Indian Lake Village of Russells Point council meeting Monday evening.

A resident of Orchard Island questioned Mayor Greg Iiams and council members as to why he was not permitted to bring his licensed golf cart into the village. (Audio interviews included.)

As more and more people are looking at alternative methods of transportation to avoid costly gas prices, communities are facing residents that are wishing to ride within corporation limits by means of various vehicles.

Mayor Iiams cited the Ohio Revised Code and his obligation to "protect the health and well being of his residents."

Listen to Mayor Iiams explain the position of the village.

Ohio Revised Code, (ORC 4519.40) states that golf carts may not be operated on any public street or highway where the posted speed limit is higher than 35 mph.

Listen as Mayor Iiams explain why speed is a factor.

Iiams went on to state that there are three routes that prevent residents from riding golf carts or snowmobiles, including 33, 708, and 366.

In other news, the board approved the financial statement with a general fund balance as of June 30th of $922,450.89.

Ordinances approved included second reading of 081018 restricting locations of U.S. mailboxes within the corporation.

Third reading of 081020 authorizing an amendment for appropriation of funds to be moved through December 2008.

Ordinance 08153 was also passed, which called for providing support from the village council to the Logan County Commissioners to place the proposed health levy on the ballot.

The council also approved a bid from Eric Grandi Construction with an approximate cost of $17,400 to replace damaged windows at the government building that are also a safety concern.

A representative from the Logan County Art League was on hand and was given approval to hold an art show, including chalk painting, at the Elks Club parking lot on August 16th.

Food and drink will be provided by the Elks and adults and children are welcome to bring their artistic talents to the event.

It was noted that the River Clean Up event held Saturday was a success with much debris and litter taken away.

Upcoming events at the village include a Neighborhood Watch Walk on August 5th at 7:00 p.m.

Donations of school supplies for Indian Lake Elementary students are requested.

A free hot dog after the walk is provided to those bringing a donation.

The Elks will be holding their "Parrot Head Party" on Saturday, August 2nd.

The Elks Club annual garage sale will be held Saturday, August 9th.

The next meeting of the Village of Russells Point will be held August 4th, with a retirement celebration for Jackie Cooper following the meeting.

Cooper has served the village for over 25 years.
