A full field of cars showed up to compete in three heats, a "B" main and the 20-lap main event. The first heat sponsored by Fifth Third Bank of Urbana saw Michigan driver Tom Hernly carry the checkered flag. (Photos included). Brandon Bayse showed the way in the second heat sponsored by People Savings and Loan of West Liberty. Daniel Wirrick was the victor in the Dingledine Trucking sponsored third heat. Max Evans sped to victory in the 12 lap "B" main sponsored by Damewood Enterprises. The 20-lap Evans Hostetler Classic saw DeWitt MI driver Craig Curtis took the lead at the start of the event. The race was a textbook lesson for short track drivers as the 20-car field had battles all the way around the tiny three-tenths mile oval. Bill Hostetler pursued Curtis and Brandon Bayse as the two local drivers tried to outrun the Michigan invader. The trio put on a great race as they circled the oval two and three wide. The win however went to Curtis in his JA Curtis Trucking coupe. Hostetler was a close second, with Bayse settling for third. " I just wanted to come down here and win this race by beating Hostetler. If you beat Bill you have beat one of the best" stated Curtis after the race. John Wylie was fourth with Daniel Wirrick fifth. The 40-lap late model main got off to a rough start as six cars crashed going into turn one. The crash saw Derrick Hodge nearly go over the wall in the ensuing crash. Hodge was uninjured but the car suffered heavy damage. Lap three saw a familiar sight for Shady Bowl fans; as Bud Perry took over the lead in his Logan AC and Heating-Redskin Motorsports backed Monte Carlo take the lead. The Edgerton OH veteran then ran away with the event to notch still another win. Mark Parker, Shawn Stansell, Brad Coons and Rob Schaeff rounded out the top five. The 20-lap Sport Stock main saw Prospect OH driver Chris Abbott pick up his second feature win of the season in his Bakers Local 57 backed Chevelle. Aaron Pippin, Larry Adams, Rodney Roush and Mark Heath finished second through fifth. The 25-lap modified feature was a fans delight, as 18 cars took the green. Brad Yelton jumped out front in his Jeff's Welding open wheeler. Yelton set sail for what at first seemed an easy win. However the posse was in hot pursuit and he soon had a lot of company to fend off. First Bud Perry was the main pursuer before giving way to fast qualifier Chad Poole. A late race shuffle saw Brad's older brother Rob pass both Poole and Perry to take over the number two spot. The race ended way too soon to set up a brother versus brother duel, as Brad claimed the win over Rob. Perry was third, with Poole fourth and Herb Newman fifth. Dave Sage of Piqua scored the win in the 20-lap Pro-4 feature in his Piqua Muffler sponsored truck. The win was the second of the season for Sage. Randy Human, Steve Clarkson, David Gerstner and Josh Sage followed. The 30-lap compact feature saw a new face in victory lane, as Buck Purtee survived the wild event in L&B Auto sponsored front wheel drive machine. The race turned into a two horse race, with Purtee trying to hold off Josh Sage to claim the win. Sage soon ran out of laps and had to settle for second. Chris Sellers was third, with Mark Parker fourth and Bob Lykins fifth. This Saturday, August 9, the super late models return, as the Main Event series makes its annual stop. The traveling speedsters will compete in a 75-lap feature. The Modifieds, Compacts, Sport Stocks and Detroit Iron cars will also be in action. Racing will start at 7.
