The Marathon in Russells Point was robbed late Saturday afternoon.

Russells Point Police Chief Joe Freyhof says officers were dispatched to the gas station around five-thirty.

Marathon employees said a black male entered the store and stole an undisclosed amount of money while a clerk was helping a customer with a gas transaction.

Freyhof said eyewitnesses were able to describe the suspect and his vehicle.

Moments later, a Washington Township officer located the vehicle abandoned behind Aunt Millies.

The suspect was not there, but the vehicle was impounded.

Officers found a loaded .38 caliber pistol inside the car along with various criminal tools, including a book on how to pick locks and safes.

Logan County Deputy Shreve and K-9 Mic started tracking the suspect to an area behind Point Place Apartments.

By 7:30 p.m., a tip from neighborhood watchers led police to the suspect.

Joseph Johnson, Jr., 57, of Columbus was arrested and charged with robbery and possession of a firearm under disability.

He was lodged in the Logan County Jail.

Johnson has an extensive felony record.

No weapons were used during Saturday's robbery.

Freyhof praised the multi-department effort by law enforcement and the community for their tips.
