The Bellefontaine Chieftains will remember last night's sectional final for many, many years. Bellefontaine standout Mark Schoeck is mobbed after his game-winning home run.(Audio interviews included.)
Varsity baseball: As featured on 1390 WBLL, Bellefontaine won a thriller in last night's Division II sectional title game at Blue Jacket Park. Rival Springfield Shawnee played an inspired game and came within one out of pulling off a major upset against the state-ranked Chiefs. The Braves set the tempo by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a pair of Bellefontaine errors. A Mark Schoeck double plated a Chieftain run in the bottom of the first inning. The game stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh inning when Sean Simon delivered with a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Hunter Siler. With one out in the bottom of the 8th inning and game tied at two, the teams were sent to the dugout because of lightning and rain. The delay lasted for one hour and eleven minutes. Springfield Shawnee scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning, but then the Chiefs countered with an at-bat that will be talked about for years to come. Nate Hauck grounded out to third to start the inning. Classmate Sean Simon followed with a solid single to left. He advanced to second on a wild pitch by Springfield Shawnee ace Tyler Gordin. Senior Josh Wallace then grounded out to second. With two outs and Simon on second, senior first baseman Mark Schoeck came through with a walk-off two-run home run. Listen to the play-by-play of Mark Schoeck's walk-off two-run homer. Listen to Mark Schoeck comment on his heroic night. Chieftain skipper Mark Brunswick describes Schoeck's memorable blast.
