Tiger runners dominate league meet Print E-mail

tiger_logo_on_10-07.jpgThe West Liberty-Salem high school and junior high cross country teams dominated the Ohio Heritage Conference meet at Cedarville University Thursday evening.

The varsity girls team won their fourth straight league title.

Team Scores:  1st West Liberty-Salem 41, 2nd Northeastern 46, 3rd Greeneview 67, 4th Southeastern 87, 5th Cedarville 115, 6th Mechanicsburg

The Big Orange was led by the senior duo of Hillary Seely and Kelsie Markin.

Seely placed first winning her second OHC individual title and Markin placed fourth.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Markin has earned first team All-OHC honors.

Head coach Ann Vogel said, "This OHC victory was a total team effort. Our seniors have been solid for us all season and they pulled through for us today when we needed it most. The win is a testimony to seniors Kelsie and Heather who have been the heart of our program for four years.  Hillary was not a favorite to win but she ran a smart race. I'm proud of her efforts. My hat goes off to Northeastern. They are a well-coached team and they came to compete tonight." 

The Big Orange finishes the regular season 93-22 and will compete in the Southwest DIII District meet next Saturday in Clayton.

The West Liberty-Salem Jr. High girls team capped off a fantastic season by winning the team race. They finished the season 97-1.

The Big Orange placed 6 girls in the top 10 and 9 girls in the top 20.

The West Liberty-Salem varsity boys team finished 3rd in the OHC.

Matt Vogel earned 1st Team All-OHC Honors with his top 7 finish.

The Tigers went 39-95 this season.

Head Coach Mike Louden said, "I'm very pleased in how the team competed and placed today! We knew that the top two teams in our league, Northeastern & Mechanicsburg, were solid teams and our goal was to finish as close to those two teams as possible. I'm extremely proud of the progress that Matt has made and I only see positive things from him heading into districts and the future. I was also pleased to see Zane Esch finish as our number 4 runner. He has really been coming on strong here at the end of the season and I hope this gives him some confidence heading into districts."

The district meet is Saturday, October 18th at 3:40 p.m.

The Jr. High Big Orange boys won the league title, edging out Northeastern by 1 point.

J.J. Birt and Aaron Scott finished 1-2 to lead the Tigers.

WLS went 105-13 this fall.

Coach Louden said, "The Middle School boys finished up the season by winning the OHC Championship by 1 point over Northeastern - 28 to 29! The whole team combined for not only a great race but a phenomenal season! I'm very pleased with their progress and success over the season. Individually J.J. and Aaron ran outstanding races finishing 1, 2!!!"
