Brian K. Hayman, 44, Bellefontaine, led officers from several departments on the chase, which culminated in a crash involving a law enforcement vehicle. Around 8:15 p.m., officers received a complaint from a witness concerning a possible drunk driver traveling west on US 33. When Chief Freyhof attempted to initiate a stop, Hayman gave the impression of pulling over, but instead began to flee, running several traffic control devices along US 33 in Russells Point. Hayman recklessly drove through Midway, Lakeview, and New Hampshire, reaching speeds of over 100 mph, and driving head-on into oncoming traffic, forcing other drivers off the road, and nearly losing control in the turns. The chase continued on to SR 196, where the highest speeds were reached. As Hayman neared the T-intersection at SR 196 and SR 67, he lost control, slamming into the bank in front of the cemetery outside Waynesfield and knocking over phone lines and boxes. Both of Hayman's passenger tires were deflated in the impact. Hayman continued to flee west on SR 67 into Waynesfield on two tires, again running traffic lights and driving left of center at speeds of over 70 mph. The Ohio State Highway Patrol successfully deflated a third tire with a spike strip near Uniopolis, but Hayman still refused to stop, despite throwing debris and sparks from driving on three rims. Patrolmen were able to spike strip the remaining tire as Hayman approached the Interstate 75 exchange, causing the vehicle to swerve wildly out of control. Hayman, now driving on four rims, managed to regain control and continue across the overpass and towards Wapakoneta. Near the Wapakoneta corporation line, an officer blocked part of the roadway with a cruiser, which Hayman proceeded to crash in to, ending the chase. The Lieutenant driving the cruiser was not injured. Hayman was taken into custody and transported to Lima Memorial Hospital to be checked for injuries, where he remained as of 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Hayman is currently under several suspensions, and has a warrant for his arrest issued by the Bellefontaine Municipal Court. In addition, Mr. Hayman was believed to be under the influence of drugs. The case remains under investigation. |
