American Red Cross Seeking Volunteers to Fulfill Humanitarian Services

Training classes available for a variety of roles,
with the ability to serve locally immediately

GREENVILLE, OH (Sept. 29, 2016) - The Northern Miami Valley Ohio Red Cross is seeking volunteers to help the organization fulfill its humanitarian mission. It is specifically looking for those interested in serving in one of three particular areas, and is offering free training in those areas during October. This means individuals can begin serving almost immediately. The three areas are:

  • Pillowcase Project | The Pillowcase Project is an hour-long presentation in partnership with Disney that teaches students in grades 3-5 how to be prepared for a disaster. This includes using a Disney-created pillowcase to fill with disaster preparedness materials—flashlights, clothes, extra toothbrush, etc.—and use as an emergency kit. Training is available on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. However, an online training component must be completed prior to the in-person training. Last year, over 1,500 children were trained locally.
  • Veteran Visitation | In order to honor our nation’s veterans, the Red Cross visits those who live in the area’s assisted living facilities to offer companionship and thank them for their service. Veteran visitation training is being held Thursday, Oct. 27, from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. A refresher training course for established veteran visitors is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27, from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
  • General presentation | The Red Cross receives numerous requests throughout the course of the year from groups looking for someone to talk about the Red Cross’s mission and programs at various events. General presentation training is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13, from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

“Volunteers are the life blood of our mission delivery and the way we reach our community”, stated Lynne Gump, Executive Director, “We are always looking to recruit new members.”  All October trainings are at the American Red Cross office in Troy at 1314 Barnhart Rd. To become a Red Cross volunteer and sign up for training, go to For more information on the trainings or how to be an American Red Cross Volunteer, contact your local office at 937-937-492-6151, located in Sidney, Ohio.

Feed Ohio
1:00 AM - 1:00 AM

All Ohio citizens are encouraged to take part in the “Feed Ohio” campaign to  assist  Governor John R. Kasich, Ohio First Lady Karen W. Kasich, and many faith and community groups provide food to help families in need.

Feed Ohio is a 100% volunteer effort timed in conjunction with the National Day of Service on September 11th.

Now in its fourth year, Feed Ohio is a statewide volunteer humanitarian effort to provide food assistance to individuals and families in the state of Ohio that need our help. Your donation serves your community.  When you donate to Feed Ohio, your items go directly to your local food bank, lending a hand to the members of your community that need it most.

Feed Ohio is a month-long intensive collaboration between faith-based groups, houses of worship, community service organizations and businesses - regardless of religious affiliation -  to gather non-perishable food and monetary donations to be distributed through local food banks across the state.

Groups in the Bellefontaine area will be donating food collections to First Lutheran Center, Bellefontaine, OH (Kim Collum) and Saint Mary of the Woods, Russells Point ( Jean Klinker).
