Local food and shelter programs encouraged to apply for federal money coming to Logan County

Logan County has been chosen to receive $5,781 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.  Local agencies providing these services are encouraged to apply to receive all or a portion of those dollars. 

 

A local board consisting of representation from the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities of Southwestern Ohio, Logan County Commissioners, Lutheran Community Services, The Salvation Army, United Way of Logan County, and the local church community will meet on Wednesday August 2 at 9:00 a.m. at the United Way office at 130 South Main Street in Bellefontaine to determine distribution of the funds.  Funds received in the past have been used for rent, utility assistance, and food.

 

Under terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:  1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) have a sound accounting system, 3) practice nondiscrimination, 4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs and 5) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have an active board.  Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

 

Requests must be submitted in writing, by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday August 1, to United Way of Logan County, 130 South Main Street, Bellefontaine, Ohio, 43311 or emailed to dave@uwlogan.org.  This should include your verification of non-profit status (i.e. 501C3) the amount of funding requested and how the funds will be used.

 

The amount of $5,781 to be used in Logan County was made by a National Board that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from The Salvation Army; American Red Cross; United Jewish Communities; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; and United Way World Wide. The National Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.  This is Phase 34 of the program.

Early Goose Season Sign Up- IL State Park

EARLY GOOSE SEASON SIGN- UP

Indian Lake State Park will have a first come, first serve sign-up for daily hunting at five (5) locations at the park area during the early goose hunting season, September 2-10, 2017.  Special restrictions will apply at the designated hunting locations.  Hunters may sign up beginning Monday, August 14th, 2017 at Indian Lake State Park Campground 13156 St. Rt. 235 N. Lakeview, OH 43331.

DUCK  BLIND DRAWING

Indian Lake State Park Duck Blind Drawing will be conducted on Saturday, August 19th, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. at the Indian Lake State Park Campground.  The campground address is 13156 St Rt 235 N Lakeview, OH 43331.  The drawing will be held to permit construction of permanent duck hunting blinds at 35 sites on Indian Lake.  Applicants must show their 2017 hunting license, 2017 state wetland stamp and either the 2016 OR 2017 federal duck stamp.  PLEASE NOTE that Indian Lake State Park no longer sells ANY wildlife licenses.  These licenses must be obtained prior to drawing arrival.  Successful applicants shall pay a non-refundable permit fee of $50.00 for construction of a permanent blind at the designated location within forty-five (45) days of the issuance of the permit.

State MLK Commission seeks nominations for awards
Deadline is Sept. 30

COLUMBUS (July 25, 2017) — Nominations are being accepted for awards honoring Ohioans who carry on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s death. 

 

Awards honoring such individuals and organizations will be given at the 2018 Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration, scheduled for Jan. 11, 2018, at Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Columbus. The theme of the commemorative celebration is MLK50: Legacy of Love in Pursuit of Justice.

 

The award ceremony is sponsored by the Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission, which is housed within the Equal Opportunity Division of the Ohio Department of Administrative Services (DAS).


Nominations are due to the commission by Sept. 30.

 

The awards and their criteria are as follows:

 

Governor’s Humanitarian Award: Nominees must be individuals who act independently of associations and organizations who give their time and service freely to those in need without question and often without recognition. This award seeks to honor those quiet soldiers who promote the welfare of humanity and the elimination of pain and suffering through their own selfless service. Nominees should represent a personal activism that has led to long-term service to the community.

 

Community Building Award: Nominees must be individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions toward building a sense of unity among Ohio citizens. Nominees must have demonstrated the ability to build safer communities through various area revitalization activities and programs. Nominators must demonstrate how the nominee has used Dr. King’s vision of nonviolent social change to successfully bring people from diverse backgrounds together to build a better community.

 

Cultural Awareness Award: Nominees must demonstrate an appreciation for diversity and evidence skill in building and maintaining harmonious cross-cultural relationships. Nominators should identify specific initiatives and accomplishments that foster Dr. King’s vision of unity among people of diverse cultural backgrounds.

 

Economic Opportunity Award: Nominees, which may be individuals, municipalities, businesses or other organizations, must seek to improve the quality of life for citizens in economically challenged areas through economic incentive programs. Nominees must demonstrate accomplishments in one or more of the following areas: workforce training development programs; upgrading skills of existing workforce; infrastructure improvements; creation of community partnerships; housing assistance programs; energy efficiency programs; environmental programs; encouragement of new business startups; ability to take advantage of state and federal aid to provide economic opportunity.

 

Educational Excellence Award: Nominees in this category must have demonstrated a personal commitment to scholarship and/or attainment of educational goals despite significant barriers or obstacles (e.g., learning disability, poverty, etc.). Nominees also must have successfully achieved progress in eradicating systemic barriers that impede the attainment of academic excellence. The activities/programs of the nominees could include mentoring, tutoring, innovative pre-school programs, highly effective pre-college programs or the provision of scholarships, etc. Nominees must show a commitment to Dr. King’s dream of social justice for all Americans through the provision/use of equal access to the means/resources of learning and the full utilization of educational opportunities.

 

Health Equity and Awareness Award: Nominees must have offered exemplary community outreach and educational programs for an under-served population in the state. These services should increase the accessibility (e.g., awareness, cost, transportation) of health care for the under-served while providing a high quality of customer service. Critical issues in achieving health equity and awareness can include provisions for drug treatment, HIV testing, screenings, prescription programs for the uninsured/underinsured, prenatal care and pediatric care. Organizations that provide health care and entities that facilitate health care delivery services are eligible to participate in this category. Nominations must document the support of services that progress toward the realization of Dr. King’s vision of an America that provides the real promise and fulfillment of hope for the poor.

 

Social Justice Award: Nominees must have made significant contributions to achieving justice for individuals or communities. Nominees have made contributions through the legal, legislative and governmental systems on behalf of society’s more vulnerable populations (e.g., sentencing disparity, red lining, census under counting, voter registration, environmental justice, etc.). The nominees must have participated in activities that embrace Dr. King’s commitment to nonviolence while fostering social justice.

 

Youth: Capturing the Vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award: Nominees must be younger than age 21 on Sept. 30, 2017. Nominees must exemplify leadership, nonviolence, commitment to excellence and interracial cooperation as well as demonstrate an adherence to one or more of Dr. King’s Six Principles of Nonviolence: “Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people; the Beloved Community is the framework for the future; attack forces of evil, not persons doing evil; accept suffering without retaliation for the sake of the cause to achieve the goal; avoid internal violence of the spirit as well as external physical violence; and, the universe is on the side of justice.”

Registration Now Open for 2017 Ohio Women Veterans Conference

Celebrating Generations of Service - 67,000 Veterans Strong

 

COLUMBUS – Registration is now open for the Ohio Women Veterans Conference, one of the largest gatherings of women veterans in the nation. This year’s conference is scheduled for Sat., Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Ohio State University Union in Columbus. Women veterans can register online at OhioVets.gov.

 

“The Ohio Women Veterans Conference is an awesome opportunity to meet and connect with our sisters in arms,” said Angela Beltz, chairwoman of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services Women Veterans Advisory Committee. “It’s a rare time when women veterans of all eras from WWII to present day Iraq and Afghanistan come together to celebrate progress and learn about the benefits we have earned.”

 

Ohio is home to 67,000 women veterans. Veterans and current military members attending the conference will find information about Ohio’s new fast track to jobs and education for veterans, services available locally through Ohio’s 88 County Veterans Service Offices and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Women Veterans programs and benefits. Workshops will cover topics such as community service, employment, entrepreneurship, military retirement, money management, and health and wellness.
