Shelby County Sheriff’s Office gives holiday shopping safety tips

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office would like to provide some holiday shopping safety tips to county residents. Sheriff Lenhart warns citizens to be attentive during their holiday shopping trips.

Shoppers should:

Not leave anything valuable in plain view in the vehicle. Lock all purchases in the trunk.

Always keep their purse or wallet with them, having cell phones and car keys immediately accessible in case of an emergency.

Be aware of surroundings at all times and park only in well lit areas.

Shop with family or friends when possible as there is safety in numbers and avoid driving alone or at night.

Park as close to the business as possible to limit exposure to criminals.

Women are encouraged to carry their purse across their body instead of on one shoulder. This action reduces the chances of a purse snatcher grabbing the purse.

ATM users should make sure that nobody is following them when using the machine. Criminals will scope out the ATM and then rob citizens in an isolated area or when arriving home.
