A downtown jewelry store was set on fire to cover up a robbery Tuesday morning around 5:50.
The suspects took an undisclosed amount of jewelry.
Bellefontaine Fire and EMS responded to Smith Jewelers at 110 West Columbus Avenue.
A passerby reported the fire.
Eyewitnesses saw smoke billowing out of the second story.
The fire prompted officials to close West Columbus Avenue between Main Street and Detroit Street for several hours. The street is now open.
Many other surrounding businesses suffered smoke damage, but the fire was contained to the jewelry store.
The fire burned a hole into the main floor.
All off-duty firefighters were called in.
No one was injured.
The cause remains under investigation.
It's a joint investigation by the fire department, the Bellefontaine Police Department, and the State Fire Marshal's Office.
Authorities are still compiling a damage estimate.
The police department assisted with traffic control.
