Grand Jury indicts 21 - City man charged for setting own house on fire

Daniel JohnsonThe Logan County Grand Jury indicted 21 people earlier this week, including a city man who set his mobile home on fire.

Daniel Johnson, 33, of 1000 Garfield Avenue, Lot 35, was indicted on two counts of aggravated arson (F1).

The Bellefontaine Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Johnson's residence (pictured below) on March 24th around 8:30 p.m.

No one was home.

Assistant Fire Chief Dwayne Dow said flames were visible when firefighters arrived.

The blaze caused $3,000 worth of damage.

Fire crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby trailers.

All off-duty personnel were called in.

Firefighters were on scene for just over three hours.

No one was injured battling the fire.

Jason Gauntt, 34, of 308 South Detroit Street, Bellefontaine, was given an amended indictment of two counts of theft (F1).

In June, he was indicted on two counts each of grand theft (F1) and attempted grand theft (F2).

Gauntt, who worked at AcuSport, was arrested on a felony charge after he tried to steal two handguns from the business on May 27th.

The Bellefontaine Police Department charged Gauntt with a first-degree felony count of theft.

Officers report that Gauntt hid the guns in a hollowed out AcuSport catalog, then tried to leave the building.

He was caught by security at the metal detector.

The handguns had an estimated value of $1,000.

Isaac WeahIsaac Weah, 23, of 4609 Refugee Road, Columbus, was indicted on 39 counts of complicity to identity fraud (F5) and one count of illegal use of a supplemental nutrition card (F5).

Mamadou Ba, 34, of 2438 Hudson Bay Way, Columbus, was indicted on 39 counts of identity fraud (F5) and forfeiture of cash.

A manager’s tip helped local authorities arrest both men on felony fraud charges in Russells Point on June 8th.

The Russells Point Police Department reports that Weah and Ba entered the Village Pantry in Russells Point around 10 p.m.

One of the men tried to purchase a carton of cigarettes with five different credit cards.

After the fifth card failed, the manager asked if he had any other means to pay to for the cigarettes. The suspect became nervous and left.

Russells Point Police Chief Joe Freyhof said the manager gave police a great description of the vehicle and both occupants.

Moments later, officers stopped the vehicle at Main Street and Township Road 239. The Logan County Sheriff's Office and Marysville Post of the State Highway Patrol assisted.

Mamadou BaAuthorities executed a search warrant and found 40 prepaid cards in plain view and under the dashboard.

An agent from the Columbus office of the Secret Service traveled to Russells Point and examined the cards. All but four of the cards were re-encoded with stolen account information.

Weah, who was driving, was charged with identity theft, trafficking food stamps, and FRA suspension.

Ba was charged with identity theft.

Both men were lodged in the Logan County Jail.

Brent Brown, 43, of 529 East Brown Avenue, Bellefontaine, was indicted on single counts of possession of drugs (F2), trafficking in drugs (F5), and forfeitures of cash and a vehicle.

Sherry Douglas, 42, of 529 East Brown Avenue, Bellefontaine, was indicted on single counts of complicity to possession of drugs (F2), possession of drugs (F3), obstructing justice (F3), and tampering with evidence (F3).

James McKee, 41, of 704 Decatur Street, Kenton, was indicted on one count of OVI (F3) with a specification for prison.

Anthony Lowery, 31, of 1037 South Main Street, Kenton, was indicted on single counts of illegal conveyance (F3) and possession of drugs (F5).

Brian Rood, 41, of 613 West Auburn Avenue, Bellefontaine, was indicted on one count of domestic violence (F3).

Troy Good, 29, 5323 State Route 273 West, Belle Center, was indicted on single counts of safecracking (F4) and breaking and entering (F5).

Brent Vermillion, 41, of 1519 County Road 10, Bellefontaine, was indicted on one count of improper handling of a firearm (F4).

Kelly Porter, 29, at large, was indicted on six counts of deception to obtain drugs (F5).

David Botner, 30, 120 West High Street, Bellefontaine, was indicted on single counts of breaking and entering (F5) and theft (F5).

Donald Taulbee, 54, 117 Orchard Avenue, Bellefontaine, was indicted on one count of improperly furnishing a firearm to a minor (F5).

Nathan Hinkle, 30, of 117 North Elm Street, Bellefontaine, was indicted on single counts of breaking and entering (F5), theft (M1), and criminal damaging (M2).

Joey Hines, 30, of 215 South Springhill Street, Bellefontaine, was indicted on single counts of possession of drugs (F5) and possessing drug abuse instruments (M2).

Scot Foreman, 28, of 337 South Miami Street, Quincy, was indicted on one count of trafficking in drugs (F5).

Randy Cole, Jr., 40, of 214 Pratt Street, Apt. 2, Bellefontaine, was indicted on one count of possession of drugs (F5).

Dusten Dye, 30, of 211 Robb Street, Apt. B, Jackson Center, was indicted on count of possession of drugs (F5).

Jennifer Smith, 32, of 139 Rachel Court, New Carlisle, was indicted on one count of non-support of dependents (F5).

Jarrod Taylor, 27, of 4000 Alpine Parkway, Lot M4, Zanesfield, was indicted on one count of non-support of dependents (F5).
