The Bellefontaine Rotary Club met on Monday with a special guest from Newberry, South Carolina.
Debra Smith is the executive director of the Newberry Opera House. She spoke about how the opera house helped kickstart the city of Newberry’s economy.
A fully restored historic building, the opera house is a live-performance space for popular artists, touring theatre companies, and local organizations.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
Smith explained the similarities between Newberry and Bellefontaine as the South Carolina city has a population of 12,000 while located in a county of around 30,000 people.
The Newberry opera house was restored in 1998 in a project that included an addition to enable its use for full theatrical productions.
Smith feels Logan County and the city of Bellefontaine can duplicate the success of the opera house.
The next meeting of the Rotary Club is Monday August 4th at the Friendly Senior Center.
