Bellefontaine BOE hears proposals from Karg and Gastineau (Audio included)

The Bellefontaine Board of Education heard two proposals at the first meeting of September Monday night.

Bellefontaine Band Director Jeremy Karg presented a proposal that will enable the band to do something that they have done every four years since 1994—go to Philadelphia over Thanksgiving.

Karg told the board that other cities were considered but the chance to visit two great cities (New York also) and march in a parade was too good to pass up.

He told the board that the group plans to attend two shows on Broadway and do some shopping in New York on “Black” Friday.

Cost will be about $850 per student with fundraisers planned to lower the cost.

The trip will be in November 2018.

Karg talks about the Philly trip.

High school Family Career and Community Leaders of America advisor Tara Gastineau presented a proposal that will enable four students to attend a two-day conference at the Marengo Retreat Center in Delaware, Ohio. The dates will be Monday, October 9th and Tuesday, October 10th.

Gastineau thinks it is a great opportunity for her students. Most of her students have not been out of Bellefontaine. It will give them a chance to experience an adult conference, meet new people, and share ideas.

She hopes to take two officers and two new group members. The cost will be covered by designated funds in the career tech program.

Gastineau discusses conference opportunities.

Jacob BoyThe board will vote on both proposals at their next meeting.

Josh Jones was approved as the freshman boys basketball coach. Cody Sigrist, who coached the freshman last year, will take the junior varsity position replacing Ben Swearingen.

Kaitey ChervenakJacob Boy and Kaitey Chervenak were honored as the high school's seniors of the month for August. They were present with their parents. Both plan to study business in college. Kaitey wants to go to Ohio State. Jacob is undecided.

The board approved a tuition rate of $359.86 for non-resident pupils. This is a required process but according to Superintendent Brad Hall, unnecessary. With open enrollment, tuition has never been charged.

The board approved policy 2413. Review of the policy is required every two years. It requires the district (mainly the high school) to take inventory of student career interests. The guidance department uses these inventories to direct students to elective courses that provide an opportunity to pursue those interests.

Brad Hall discusses policy 2413.

The board will next meet on Monday, September 25th at 6:30 P.M.
