WL-S BOE gets fieldhouse update (Audio included)

West Liberty-Salem’s Board of Education learned Tuesday night at their monthly meeting that the proposed fieldhouse project is still in the discussion stage. No timeline has been established for construction despite the athletic boosters raising half of the million dollars needed to construct the building.

The main issue remains what portion, if any, the district will contribute to the million dollar price tag. In addition, some logistical questions need to be addressed.

Board members learned that the district is getting guaranteed funds from the state as a protection to the district’s declining enrollment. The closing of Adriel School had a negative impact on the enrollment numbers. The residents of the school counted toward the district’s overall enrollment. The district is stable financially as long as the state’s guarantee remains in place. Increased open enrolled students are helping to offset the numbers loss from Adriel.

Elementary principal Aaron Hollar reported that 104 prospective kindergarten students went through the screening process. The district expects to take 92 students beginning in the fall. The process to determine who gets selected is based on a priority list.  Current residents are automatically included. Of the 24 that are open enrolled possibilities, those that have siblings already enrolled get priority.

The board accepted the resignation of first grade/special education teacher Kassi Shaffer. Her position and that of retiring high school teacher Greg Thomas will be filled this summer.

Superintendent Kraig Hissong addresses several topics from Tuesday's meeting.

The board learned that the Logan County Board of Revisions will conduct a hearing on June 18th regarding Green Hills Apartments dispute of their property tax amount. If the dispute is upheld, the district could lose $9,100 in tax revenue. County Auditor Mike Yoder and district treasurer Chelsea Baldwin will attend to provide information on behalf of WL-S.

The board will next meet on Tuesday, June 19th at 7:00 P.M.
