Meghan Vogel was honored in downtown West Liberty Monday evening with a parade and celebration.
Vogel is the Division III state champion in the 1600m, however it was her actions during the 3200m event that received the greatest notice. She helped fellow runner Arden McMath of Arlington cross the finish line after McMath collapsed.
West Liberty-Salem Athletic Director Jake Vitt commented the event was held so the community could honor Meghan for her accomplishments and actions.
Vitt explains why the celebration was held.
Before the ice cream social, many guest speakers spoke including Congressman Jim Jordan and OHSAA Commissioner Dr. Dan Ross.
Meghan received several acknowledgements. David Abraham, a Special Olympian from Las Vegas, was so inspired by Meghan's story that he sent her one of his gold medals. A scholarship has also been started in Vogel’s honor, West Liberty-Salem gave her a sportsmanship award, and the Elementary Mile Club provided her with a certificate. She was also given the Bellefontaine Examiner newspaper plate from the day the story ran.
Both Meghan and Ann Vogel commented that the support given by the West Liberty area has been tremendous and that it is a great place to live.
