Learning in Logan County doesn’t stop when summer starts.
Summer Enrichment Academy is a weeklong experience that teaches a variety of subjects to kids from around the county. The program teaches themes ranging from shark dissection to baking classes (pictured bottom right) to a radio sportscasters camp (pictured left).
June 11th through the 15th, from 9:30 to 11:30 each day, children from elementary to middle school participate and engage in activities relating to their subject. The five-day event allows students to meet other kids their age and with the same interests as themselves.
256 kids were involved in the ninth annual academy this summer. Participants included students from Benjamin Logan, Bellefontaine, Riverside, Indian Lake, West Liberty-Salem, Calvary Christian, Ridgemont, and even Greenon.
Event coordinator Sally Stolly told how the event truly helps kids make friends and learn new things in a fun and unique way. Native American culture class teacher Bill Davis said this experience will give students memories their entire life.

Using hands-on teaching techniques and entertaining activities, students are encouraged to learn something new, step out of their comfort zone, and have fun while doing it.
Some unique classes include the slimy science class where students used science to make slimy
experiments. The Native American culture class was also busy making spears and war axes while learning about Native American life.
Another subject being taught was the math behind bowling. Kids took a tour of TP Lanes on Monday and then learned how to score bowling throughout the week, and as a reward went bowling on Friday.
Also being taught was the WPKO and WBLL Sportscasters camp where students talked on the radio and learned how to properly call a game on air. In addition to leaning the secrets of radio, campers were given the chance to announce an actual baseball game on the radio.
Listen to Bill Tipple question sportscaster students on what they’ve learned.
Summer Enrichment Academy makes hands-on learning fun and interesting. Students were kept busy all week and enjoyed the unique way they were being taught. Organizers look forward to another great year in 2013.
