City woman cited for discharging fireworks

A city woman was cited after she repeatedly shot off fireworks near her residence early Thursday.

The Bellefontaine Police Department responded to the 300 block of North Elm Street around midnight.

Carmelita Haithcock, 38, of 317 North Elm Street, discharged the fireworks.

She told officers she did not understand why it was illegal and added, "How much is the fine? I'll just pay it."

Authorities gave Haithcock a warning and told her to quit discharging them.

About 45 minutes later, police responded to additional fireworks being discharged near Haithcock's home.

She was cited for possession, sale, or discharging of fireworks.

Police said it's the first citation they've issued in the city in several years.

While it's legal to buy fireworks in Ohio, nearly all of them are illegal to discharge in our state.
